I am no expert, but this place was tasty.
The assortment of mustards go well with the varieties of sausages.

What can I say, what a selection! We stopped by having passed ‘the giant sausage’ a couple times and always saying but never getting around to it. Wish we’d done it sooner. Stocked up on several cheeses, the ‘triple smoked’ pork chops (!) and my all time favorite, bundnerfleisch (I can’t tell you how happy I am finding this!!). We also had a bite to eat and it was swell! I had the mixed four sausage breakfast and told them to surprise me with the choices, all of it was delicious although a Hungarian (?) sausage with paprika really was my favorite! Place was busy and we had to wait a couple mins to be seated, but that’s a good sign in my book and ho boy was it worth it. Also the coffee is really good and I always judge a place by the coffee. Really pleased and we’ll be back for sure.

A great place to get fresh cold cuts, cheeses and sausages. They have a nice selection of foreign chocolates. And they make delicious sandwiches and salads to order. The staff is very friendly! Always love going there!

Had heard good things and read Unilocal reviews so a friend and I decided to try it on a Friday afternoon around 2:30 pm. Upon entering, you walk thru the market into the café in the back. One waiter acknowledged us and told us to seat ourselves though the sign said wait to be seated but she wasn’t overly friendly.
There are about 10 (or so) tables and about 4 of the tables were occupied. We waited about 8 – 10 minutes before anyone came over to us with menus and took our drink order (which was just tap water).
As we mulled over the menu, we decided to share a bowl of the hungarian mushroom soup and ordered two double sausage platters, one with chorizo and andouille sausage and cole slaw, the other, an Italian sausage over peppers and onions, the brauernwurst sausage with hand cut fries.
The soup arrived first with two slices of rye bread. It was very good except not very hot. Then our platters arrived shortly. I thought the hand cut fries were excellent, crispy and hot but a bit salty. The chorizo was my favorite, the andouille a bit too spicy for me and had a spice in it that I didn’t prefer but couldn’t pin point it, the Italian was ok and the brauernwurst tasted much like bologna. We both really liked the cole slaw. I wanted to try the spaetzle but talked myself out of it after reading it was fried in butter, maybe next time.
Our total tab including tip around $ 30. Overall, ok but very salty. Would prefer to have the sausages cooked in a dish vs. eating them as a main protein..

This is a very unique place with quite a few homemade European items. On a good day this place is off the chart on a bad day you might want to give it a second chance. Here are the pros and cons:
Pros: homemade sausages that you cannot get anywhere else through a good part of the USA. Many German types and prices for such are more than reasonable.
Tiny café/​restaurant inside with good dishes, European deserts and German beers.
Many international mustards, breads, candies from Europe.
Cons: prices of store (imported items) are crazy high $ 6 kinder eggs for example
Sometimes the quality of sausages are top notch. Other times they were not mixed well and you get a mouthful of seasoning.
Service is sometimes great. Other times you want to pull your hair out. Some employees have a real bad attitude and are unwilling to adapt to your request. Other employees are awesome why I say at least give it another shot if it was not great.
Finally my biggest gripe is they will sell you weis wurst that is not full encased whether it be a bad cut or what have you but that gets returned in Germany as it is a boiled sausage so do not sell to your customers.

Karl’s — what can you say about this place that has not already been said. While I can get a lot of their products at a place closer to me, what I can not get is their amazing sausages. This place … is worth the drive and the wait.
The restaurant is also good if you crave good German-​American food. The last time I was here I got the schnitzel just like my mom used to make. This week I got the Reuben with ham, cheese, sauerkraut, and mustard on German bread — awesome. Just the right ratio of crispness to sandwich. I have had a few of the extras like spaetzel, fries, German potato salad, etc. I would get the spaetzel or potato salad again but would stress they need a bit of seasoning like salt. The fries were not my cup of tea nor is the curry ketchup that is on the table.
Definitely worth the trip out this way!

Just got back from Karl’s Sausage Café. They wouldn’t seat me because I was alone. There were two four-​seat tables of which two seats at each were empty. When I pointed to the empty seats, the girl smiled and said we can’t seat you there because we were told not to do that. WHAT?!
She asked if I wanted to wait for a two-​seat table. Now, what the heck is the difference between that and an empty seat that was already available? She smiled again and said the wait would be about 45 minutes. No thank you.
So, if you’re single and want to try Karl’s Café, you might want to consider take-​out to avoid being treated rudely. I just spun around and left.

Good German food with a wide selection of German and bavarian foods. Lots of handmade pastries as well.

Great, basic German food. Casual atmosphere. It is located in the back of a European food store. Nice selection of beers. The mead was tasty. Don’t forget to pick up some sausages on your way out!

Karl’s Sausage Kitchen has been a staple in my family growing up! My grandparents were good friends with the original owners so I grew up going here (Saugus location) with my mom and grandmother as a kid. My kids then grew up tagging along with me to Karl’s. The place is always clean and the food is always fresh! The domestic Hungarian Salami is one of our favorites! You can not go wrong with any of the meats they are all great! I do however miss the old staff they always got it right with how thin or thick to cut the meats. It seems like every time I come in now there is someone new behind the counter and the young kids do not always cut the meat right. Before I never had to say anything but now I have ask to see a piece to make sure it is not too thick and even then it is sometimes not right. I Never had to do that with the old staff.

Everything you could want in a German deli and so much more. Wish I didn’t live 1100 miles away. If you’re luck enough to live within 100 miles of this place go now. Bring your appetite for some awesome food and bring your cooler to stock up on some of the finest German cold cuts and sausages in New England.

This place is legit. Their sausage is amazing and they have great selection.
We did sit down dinner service. Service was friendly, the food was great. LOVE the cabbage and spätzle — STRONGLY recommend you get these sides when ordering.
Fun German market attached to the deli and restaurant. Really worth checking out if in the area.

Nice people, some great food. Great coffee too. The frankfurters are amazing, the buns are high quality bread and their mayo is realllllllly good. The spatzle side is great if you love butter. All of the desserts are 4 stars. I’m not a fan of everything we’ve tried there, but overall it’s 5 stars for our favorite dishes. The Swedish meatballs and mashed potatoes are also great. Cute store as well.

Excellent place for a quick german lunch. Delicious food.
They also always have some type of German beer on draft.

Peabody– the culinary center on the Northshore for German food– because of Karl’s.
The cheese/​cherry strudel with fresh whipped cream may have a week’s worth of calories, but what a way to go.
Everything is homemade from the French fries, slightly sweet sauerkraut and soups. Nothing like a lunch of a wurst of choice (about 8 types) on a crispy bun, filled with kraut and slathered with a favorite brown mustard (several varieties), washed down with a good German beer that you can only otherwise get in Dusseldorf or Heidelberg. The café is really small, and kind of an afterthought to the deli and shop– so if you don’t get there early, prepare to wait– and wait.

Holy sausages.
The amount and quality of pork at the Deli is tremendous, just amazing amount of sausages/hams/bologna’s. Great service, great meat, horrible Route 1.

So delicious, so authentic! Curry ketchup = Who knew there was such a thing? I certainly didn’t! Yummers!
I tried the regular kielbasa and a spicy Hungarian assuage. Both were amazing and huge… easily got two more lunches with my doggie bag.
Also got some ham & cheese @ the deli… Stay tuned for my review when I make a grilled cheese w/​it!!!
Overall I give this place two-​thumbs up; delicious food, very clean, and very reasonable prices!

I was in the North Shore and decided to take a detour here for lunch. It’s a little hard to find if you’re not from the area, as it’s off of Route 1. Unilocal did not disappoint.
I went for a coarse bratwurst, knockwurst, with spaztle for a side. The brat wasn’t all that and I wasn’t impressed in terms of taste/​texture. However, the knockwurst was another story. It was excellent, with a nice sear, and great texture. The flavor was tremendous. The spaztle was nicely fried and it melts in your mouth when you get past the crispy exterior.
Although it’s not made in-​house, the linzer torte is quite good. I like the sharp raspberry flavor and there’s enough hazelnut flavor to the crust. Konditor Meister still has a better product but this isn’t bad for the price.
I had some cordial and efficient service during my trips here. I like the assortment of meats, and northern European products here.
There aren’t that many central European stores and restaurants anymore around these parts. I’m really hopeful that this place will continue to provide quality meats.

I’ve been going to Karl’s for most of my life on Route 1 and this new and improved location. I adore the little café they have now with authentic German food. Disclaimer: I have German parents so I’ve been eating this cuisine all my life!
There are 3 working parts to this establishment.
1. Café… food, libations and dessert is served at tiny tables. (Lunchtime fills up fast!). It smells so good in there!!!
2. small grocery store… the aisles of German and European food fill the shelves. Wonderful breads, soup starters and delicious chocolates are to be found in abundance! The Gummy selection alone is amazing (back shelf!)
3. The deli is AMAZING. This is truly what Karl’s is ALL about! From authentic handmade sausages, to cold cuts to roasts. This is what makes my half hour drive worth it!
The only thing that would make it a perfect score is the staff. At times I feel like they are not the nicest. When I spend nearly $ 300 for Christmas I should be getting a big smile, and gratitude — I just get indifference for shopping there. That’s the only bummer in an overall fabulous place!

The reviews don’t lie.
I’ve wandered in on a couple of occasions only to leave completely overwhelmed and confused by the variety at this unique shop/​café. Up to 55 types of sausage, a large selection of bologna’s, creamed herring (no thanks!) etc.
Finally checked out the café. Pretty amazing! First time ever trying spaetzle. Wow. Goulash with stew beef and buttered noodles was very tender and savory. Tried the cheese plate. it was a perfect app. Looking forward to trying their lamb and pork sausage. Curried catsup as well. Didn’t try that yet. Fun mustard selection at the tables too. Beer selection is well varied with something for all tastes. Wine is also available.
The sausage we tried was beyond compare … not the type you might bump into outside of Fenway Park for instance, tho I enjoy those on every trip to a game.
Every bite of a Karl’s sausage is to be enjoyed and with the many mustards available, it’s also quite an adventure.
