Specialties

At the heart of J. Lohr’s renowned red wine program are its 2,000 acres of estate vineyards in Paso Robles. Featuring warm, sunny days, cool nights and diverse soils, these vineyards have proven ideal for cultivating a flavorful array of grapes including voluptuous and complex Bordeaux and Rhone varietals and blends along with Zinfandel.

Our Paso Robles Wine Center features our J. Lohr signature wines for sale and a selection for tasting including J. Lohr Cuvée Series, J. Lohr Vineyards Series and J. Lohr Estates.

In 2009 we launched J. Lohr Gesture — A token of thanks including a deeply flavored wine artfully presented has the power to influence a mood or occasion with a lasting impression. J. Lohr Gesture wines are exclusively available at our Wine Centers. Current selections are Gesture Syrah, Gesture GSM and Gesture Mourvedre.

2012 culminated the release of our eagerly awaited Highlands Bench Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which are grown in the unique Santa Lucia Highlands.

History

Established in 1988.

Jerry Lohr’s agricultural roots armed him with an innate sense for the intricacies of climate, soil quality and location. His research led him to the Central Coast, a region with one of the longest growing seasons in all of California. Selecting the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County for his first vineyard, Jerry planted his first 280 acres of varietals grapes in 1972 and 1973. Initially, Jerry planted eleven different varietals in the vineyard. The varietal selection was reduced to the three most appropriate. Today, this vineyard — expanded to 1100 acres since 1988 — produces outstanding chardonnay and pinot noir. Jerry understood that great chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon could not be grown side-by-side. In 1986, he began planting cabernet sauvignon, merlot and other red varietals in San Luis Obispo County’s Paso Robles region. Being an artisan farmer, Jerry tended to the vines, while development of an adjacent winery and barreling facility, which was completed in 1988.
