Ganahl Lumber

Don’t bother with the windows and doors department. My wife and I went in there over a month and a half ago to get an estimate to replace the interior and exterior doors on our house. We still haven’t received a comprehensive itemized estimate for the material and labor. They sent us a vague install cost that seems like they pulled the number out of thin air but with no breakdown explaining how they arrived at this number. How do they stay in business when they refuse to provide clarity? Additionally, I made it clear that I needed this completed by the third week of February, giving them two and a half months. At this rate they should have the doors sized by early next year and installed when my 5 month old daughter graduates college. I shan’t be returning nor should you — total waste of time and energy.

I ordered some windows with an estimated 4 – 6 week lead time. My follow up (calls, emails, visits) to get the status and anticipated delivery date went unanswered.
It’s the middle of the 7^th week and I just got a call that we can expect delivery on the 10^th week. My home addition is delayed nearly 4 weeks.
Customer service has been poor. I couldn’t believe that George was unable to get a status from his manufacture in the 5^th and 6^th week. His attitude was defensive and unhelpful.
I’m just hoping that the product is of quality when it arrives. This would be their only saving grace.

Competitive price on wood and did my cuts for free. I didn’t realize Ganahl Lumber has much more than lumber. Tools, home building supplies like Osh or Home Depot… competition is good.

The architect/​planner that designed the layout of the parking for this store should be shot. There is a tiny ridiculous parking lot that doesn’t really border the main entrance to the store. The main entrance to the store is inexplicably located on the side of the store. Even though the parking lot is tiny for a store of this size, it’s partitioned into two sections (one for the Doors and Windows building– why?) and it has speed bumps! Though the store (the lumber yard) has an entrance on E Walnut street– this isn’t for public use. One has to enter and exit on Colorado– and usually turning anything other than right (East) out of the parking lot is difficult on Colorado boulevard. Whoever designed this parking lot really must want Ganahl to fail as a business. The access simply couldn’t be worse. I just went there earlier today drove around in circle in the parking lot and left when I couldn’t find parking. I went to OSH instead.
(PS The times I actually made it into the store, I generally found no salespeople to help me, and I detected a distinct attitude toward the DIY’er. This is a store for contractors and laborers, not for the average hardware shopper– and they let you know that)

Apparently, they don’t check stock before selling you material. I placed an order for material to build a fence and it showed up onsite short. They never bothered to notify me. Then when I called them, they said that they won’t get it back in stock until the following week. Would have been great to know this at the time of order. Now I’ve got a bunch of dudes I’m paying to stand around because there’s no material for the job.
I usually don’t use Ganahl and I’ve generally heard good things about them. But this is just an epic fail. I’m going to assume that this is just a one-​time brain fart… but way to fuck up my job.

Price is a bit high but the team the staff and selection is very good. Better than Home Depot or Lowes for quality hardware

It’s great to have an old school lumber yard close by. Ganahl Lumber has been around Southern California for decades, my Dad used to go one of their yards when he was a boy. They have good priced on lumber and good quality material, not like that other place, (HD). Friendly staff who help you load truck or car. Good election of tools and hardware too.

George in the window department was a tremendous help. He took the time to scrape the paint off of some window hardware to find out the exact replacement part I needed.

Wow I am impressed. I have been going to home depot because they were 10 minutes from home and get so frustrated with their horrible customer service that I just had to walk out after standing in a line for the pro desk for 20 minutes behind 7 other people waiting for the 1 person behind the desk helping. I found Ganahl thru Unilocal although it is a 25 minute drive they have a new customer who will come back here for everything I need. Justin helped me and his knowledge and professional demeanor were awesome. I WILL BE BACK.

Ganahl Lumber in Montrose has some of the highest quality lumber in Southern California that is only matched by their service. I’m not sure if this place is family owned, but it has that feel. The staff is extremely helpful and they work seemlessly as a team. They patiently allowed me to inspect each piece of lumber that I was interested in and cut it to my specification. Forget those big box hardware store for your lumber, Ganahl lumber is where you want to be!

It’s only missing that last star because they have people walking around who don’t know what some things are (HELLO SCRIBE!) and some other less than perfect advice. Generally good stuff and you can’t beat the selection and price of their hardwoods. I shop there for the lumber needed for finer projects.

This review is for their windows and doors department.
I asked for quotes for replacing several interior doors, balcony sliding doors, a large window and front door from Matt. Was told there is a $ 50 fee for measurement, which I paid. However, it took more than a week to schedule the measurement appointment, then it took almost another two weeks to get the quotes after I sent him several follow up emails. When I finally got the quotes, it did not include quotes for the balcony sliding doors, window and the front door. When I asked him to look into why I was not given the quotes as requested, he did not reply my email. I felt that he did not really want my business. I had high hopes for this store and was hoping to give them my business, but I was very disappointed with my experience here. Will not return.

Cleanest most organized hardware store. And the staff is very knowledgable and friendly. Plus reasonable prices. Win win win.

This is for the Doors/​Windows Department:
I would rather chop down a tree and make a door myself than use Gahnal for a new door again. Avoid George above all. The door itself is great — it just took three months to get it because first George ordered the wrong door and then the correct door but the wrong size. He wanted to charge us more money on top of everything to re-​order the correct door. We avoided that through sheer force of will but the cost was still much higher than the estimate he gave us.

Vanessa and Leon were very helpful and incredibly kind. I needed a few slabs of wood cut and they didn’t even charge me. A much better alternative to Home Depot.

I love this store. I’m very loyal and they treat me very well. I am continually impressed with their customer service and products. It’s not the cheapest place but it’s worth it for, the service. Don in lumber is great. Johnnathon in delivery and Mike in paint are some of the best and most knowledgeable.
I appreciate them and all the employees in general.

If you can’t find what you need at Ganahl you’re in trouble. They’ve got anything and everything you would need for you home project. Plus everyone is so helpful and friendly. You can also sense the vibe of the company by just watching the employees… obviously this is a good company.

DO YOU HATE HOME DEPOT LIKE I DO?

Not that the owners don’t WANT TO BE like Home Depot —- but THEY AREN’T
So it is cleaner — tidier — more helpful — and just as abundant in what you need as the evil HD.

It’s really refreshing to go into a hardware store /​lumber yard where everything is organized and clean. Plus, there are folks that can fill your order or help you load your cart and then load your car or truck.
Home Depot isn’t really a lumber yard and they don’t carry «A» stock and they don’t carry nice hardwoods. However this place is a real lumber yard with a great selection or high quality wood and construction grade lumber. You still might have to dig through the pile to get a straight stick but at least you can find the wood you want.
I was worried the lumber would be more expensive than Home Depot but generally the prices were the same if not lower. A sheet of MDF was 2 dollars less than Home Depot. 2x4s where about 50 cents more but they were way better quality.
Also, the cuts were way better here than Home Depot. No wandering around and waiting 25 minutes to find some one to do a cut. And the cuts were accurate. Not to mention that they perfectly ripped a but of trim for me that would be impossible for me to get done at Home Depot and annoying for me to do on my table saw.
Lumber yards generally can offer competitive pricing on lumber because they actually do a lot of volume. My guess is that Home Depot might be more competitive on tools and whatnot but it’s a case by case thing.
Happy to have a nice lumber yard close by.
