History

Established in 1937.

Over 75 years ago Foothill Plane Mill was established near the intersection of Wagstaff and Pentz roads. In the 1950’s the McAfee family bought the plane mill, added a sawmill and renamed the business Foothill Mill and Lumber company. In 1970, fed up with the big city life, James Ely bought the mill and moved his family. James and his son Marshall, then 12, would saw in the morning and open the yard for sales in the afternoon.

In 1994 Jim retired, he lives next door and is just a shout away. Marshall now manages the yard for the family. He has transformed Foothill Mill into a more traditional lumber yard by adding hardware and garden departments. He continues to use the old sawmill for custom work for repairs to old buildings that need lumber to match the original size. «2×4’s» have not measured 2 inches by 4 inches for years. Nowadays, they are approximately 1−½″ x 3−½″. Foothill can also duplicate the siding of an older home, a service your big box stores can not provide.
