Fillmore & 5th

Pretty, well-​curated consignment boutique in a semi-​upscale (I say «semi» because there is also a CVS and Trader Joe’s) shopping center. They mostly sell higher-​end designer accessories and clothing but I’ve seen Kate Spade, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and BCBG sold there as well.
The shoe selection is pretty diverse! They have a designer rack but I also saw quite a bit of Cole Haan and J. Crew. I would try on shoes regardless of what size they are listed under, because vintage sizing is different from today’s. I wear a size 8 shoe but I was able to fit perfectly into a pair of Kate Spade slingbacks that were listed as size 9.
Prices here are a bit steep but for the neighborhood and clientele I’m not surprised. Employees are not super friendly or engaging either but at least they leave you alone to your browsing!

Everything about this store should be good, but I’ve never had luck. They seem to have a lot of things that look ok but there’s something not right about them — one example being a very cute dress that has a slit so high you could never wear it. The store itself is clean with great brands. The service has been iffy too — it often seems like they don’t really want to be there or are annoyed that there are customers. I’ll keep going, but I really miss my Redz Trading back in DC with such friendly staff and such awesome selections.

Do you read the New York Times? There’s a column in the Business section called The Haggler. People write in about particularly egregious behavior by businesses, like a moving company that gives a client a low estimate and then on moving day says, «Oh no, we underestimated» and doubles the charge.
Well, if there was a column that describes the opposite behavior of businesses, those who provide exceptional service, I’d write in to praise Fillmore & 5^th.
I happily sold two items at this store and got the check for both right away. No longer needing it, I shredded the receipt, suddenly realizing I had also shredded the check.
Scott, the manager, patiently settled in as I asked to plead my case to reissue the check and not charge the $ 25 lost check fee. I gave him a copy of the recovered bits and pieces from my shredder bin, showing it was their check (right away Scott said, «Yes, that’s ours») and similar evidence. Scott immediately said, «No problem, I’ll reissue the check now and you’ll get it in the mail.» What a relief — and no lost check fee. The next day I got a personal email from Scott reporting the check had been reissued, and I would get it shortly, which I did.
The good will that Scott displayed, the fast action he took, the no-​hassle handling of my dilemma makes me a happy customer and fan.

I was intrigued when I stumbled upon this store.
I entered the store and was greeted by a sales person. I asked how long they have been at Town & Country, I mentioned that I know idea the store was there. She was immediately offended and quipped– 3 years, turned on her heels and stomped off.
I shrugged that off to perhaps she was having a bad day.
After that, I didn’t get much help. But I don’t need someone hovering over me, so it didn’t bother me.
After waiting 10 mins for a fitting room, my sales person –without any words– showed me to a dressing room. And never came back.
Ok, I thought, it’s not Neiman’s, obviously they’re not working on commission here.
I went to the cashier to purchase my items, and waited another few minutes before Mr Busy (different employee) even noticed that there were 2 customers waiting. He was just playing with his phone, not looking up.
During our transaction, he asked if I wanted a bag. I said no thank you, I have one, as I placed my reusable bag on the counter. I signed my cc receipt, after which he loudly says «oh– did you want ME to put that in YOUR bag for you.» I wanted to say, if you are offended at the idea that you should put items that your customers have purchased in a shopping bag– whether it be your bag or theirs– you are working in the wrong business. Instead I said «I can do it if you don’t have time.» Without saying another word, he picked up his phone and walked away.
I had come to Town and Country having just shopped at Wilkes Bashford at Stanford Shopping Center. AT WB, I was greeted with a friendly hello and an offer of bottled water before the door even closed behind me. I realize this treatment doesn’t happen everywhere. But how hard is it to greet your costumers with a smile and offer a basic level of customer service? All without having your phone in your hand? And leaving your bad attitude aside.
Who ever owns this store, I hope you are reading. I have worked in customer service for the apparel industry for over 20 yrs. This was by FAR, the worst customer service I have witnessed.
I’m giving this store 2 stars (and not 1 star) based solely on the fact that it was very well organized and easy to shop and find things. And the merchandise was better than most. Not high end, but not low end either.

It’s easier than Ebay however they way underprice my designer goods and I only get back pennies on the dollar. Good for shoppers, great deals.

My only complaint is that I can’t walk out of the shop without spending money! They always have at least one must have for my wardrobe. Always in season and on trend, and great sale items as well.

I’m really excited to have found an upscale consignment store closer to me than Main Street Rags in Walnut Creek! Seriously, I drive an hour for well priced, tasteful, classic fashion.
For me, this store has a lot of potential. I really like their taste and found several pieces I really liked — only buying one because unless it falls into the work or dressy dinner categories I won’t splurge. But the taste level is definitely there, and while they may have a dry week — you can’t fix bad taste, so I’ll definitely be back.
Some notes, I would have loved to have seen the shoes organized by section and not by shelf — it was harder on the eye to search for shoes in your size. And possibly the addition of a separate sale rack? I will stop in weekly if you have a section that runs 30−50% off, it doesn’t matter how big it is, just that it’s separate.
I’m super excited to drop in again and find something awesome, and I’m really jazzed I found this place!

Just as an update, the store did make good on all of its promises to me. They sent back the dress they accidentally donated (caught it before it was shipped out), and also provided a check to compensate me for the shirt they accidentally donated.
Additionally, I learned that they changed their policy to be more clear about when a consignor’s consignment period is finished, and they say they now notify consignors to come pick up their unsold items before they are donated.
For those reasons, I have continued to consign at this store.
In fact, I recently received a check for $ 300 (!!!) after a pair of Chanel pumps I consigned at the store sold. I hope that the pumps found a new owner who can wear high heels better than I can!
So now my review is positive. I am SO GRATEFUL that the store listened to my complaints, and that it worked hard to remedy its problems on behalf of me and the other consignors.

The short: Great place to find stylish and contemporary pieces
My friend and I weren’t even planning on going to this store. We were lured by the clothes and the displays, so we headed inside and found quite a few items. I immediately found some clothes to try on, browsing through some designer names I recognized and didn’t. I pulled some dresses off the rack and a lady came over to ask if she could take them to hold (so I didn’t have to hold them). Why thank you, I love your store! I was surprised to find a major luxury designers (think Lanvin) mixed with a romper from H&M (not sure about the price since it was so close to retail). I was also enamored with their shoes in the back of the store.
I tried on the clothes, debating over two dresses, when my friend helped me choose the more flattering dress. I took it to the register and this is why it’s not a 5 star… The cashier was stand offish and was less than pleasant handling the transaction. It’s a quick less-​than-​2-​minute period. There’s no need for sass.
I’ll be coming back to check out more of the selection here (I didn’t even look at the coats, shirts, pants, etc.!), but I’ll be weary if their customer service continues to decline. (I’m hoping it’s a one-​time instance.) Other Unilocalers have mentioned that the consignment rate isn’t that great. I can’t attest to that, but I’m more than happy to support a small business.

I used to have good experiences at this store but the last several times I have dealt with them as a consignor have not been good. First experience a month ago they told me I had an item to pick up. I went in to pick it up and no one could find it. They told me it had been donated. So I drove home and there was a phone message saying no, it was not donated, it was in the store for pickup. I had to drive back again to get my stuff. Um hello your store is NOT that big.
I consigned a bunch of things in April, I think, and only about half sold but when I went to pick up the other day there were two items to pick up. Judging by the check I received there should have been several more pieces. Shady.
To make matters worse, I brought in a huge bag of nice summer items-​designer stuff, good labels. There were probably about 75 items and they took 20. Two days later I received a price list that had 8 items on it. I was like «uh no… there are 12 items missing». So I called them and they said «Oh-​we sent you the wrong email. You have some items to pick up». Excuse me? You passed on 12 items and are only taking 8 out of 20? To quote Christian Bale «you and I are done professionally».
Weak sauce.

Great place to sell/​trade/​find great pieces! I left 30+ pieces in the Palo Alto Store and was checked in quickly with the No Nonsense approach I rec’d in the San Francisco Store — I really miss that location bc it’s more convenient to travel from my apartment.
I rec’d a check for the pieces they sold within a couple of weeks with an itemized list of what sold and for how much.
Great solution for getting dollars from pieces you don’t wear/​or need — I’m very satisfied with the service I received there.

This is a decent consignment store located in Palo Alto. The inventory is actually not too large. I’m kind of surprised there aren’t more purses and accessories actually. Some of the items are by the register so it’s a little bit awkward to browse there.
Their shoe collection was impressive as a whole but limited per size (in my opinion) — I didn’t see that many 37 (size 7) shoes to my surprise.
Some brands spotted here: Pucci, Burberry, Tory Burch, MaxMara etc.
I did really like a Tory Burch bag but it was still $ 300. I guess it’s half off but I would have probably purchased it if it were $ 200 or so.

I love this store! The staff is extremely friendly, honest, professional without being pushy, and helpful. I have never once felt intimidated or uncomfortable, as I do in some other «High end» stores. I have bought several items, having recently purchased a lovely designer scarf as a gift, and found an amazing Cole Haan purse that perfectly suits my needs. I introduced my mother in law to Fillmore & 5^th and she has found many fabulous items. She is seriously considering consigning some of her own items here. If you love designer brands but hate the high designer price tags then this store is for you.

Simply adore this store. Every time I come in the staff not only remembers me and warmly greets me, but treats me and my friends as though we are their main focus. I always find the most adorable products in wonderful condition. Everything is priced fairly and wonderful.
I have consigned a few times and the contract CLEARLY STATES the dates for mark down and donation. Their place is really wonderful. It is all out for me so there is no confusion. Always remember to READ ad MARK the dates otherwise things happen but it is all in the agreement we sign. Mark it in my phone each time.
I adore the staff, I believe the two staff members named were Zoe and Michelle? Could be wrong but either way they were wonderful Simply sweethearts and enthusiastic about their jobs.
I do have to be careful about when I go in because I know I will buy something. :-o If that is even a downside. But 5 stars. wonderful environment, location, merchandise and staff.

Perhaps I’m used to consigning at «low end» places like Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange so I’m not experienced with how this place operates, but I did not feel comfortable consigning my designer bag for 40%. They even said they’ll sell it in stores for $ 150 so I can earn $ 90 when it’s sold… That might’ve been tempting had their math been accurate. $ 90 would be how much the STORE «profits»… not me (nice try).
The store is clean and carries some elegant pieces but I didn’t see anything worth buying, and the selling process also doesn’t interest me in coming back. The friendly employee did suggest I try selling on Craigslist (which is what I’ll likely do). So thanks for everything … and nothing. This place is just not for me.

If, like with others, they had only not listened to us and stopped the markdown process without our permission, we would just chalk it up to incompetence and greed and let it go. But they wrote the check to the wrong person, (we told them who to make it out to) and now they are refusing to rewrite the check.
That’s right, they sold our clothes, got the money, and are keeping it all. Hello, police report. Note to manager: this is theft.
If you are considering dealing with this store, be prepared for nasty customer service, arguments, lack of respect and reference to «corporate policy». Maybe Apple’s new VP of retail wants to wander over and give a lesson on the world of retail success. A genius Bar we don’t need there, but thinking things through would be a start. I’m listening, Wren, if you want to apologize and write the check without an argument.
UPDATE: Wren appears to have given some thought to keeping all our money and said she will pay us, minus a stop payment fee. We informed her we have the check and will be returning it to them, so there is nothing to stop payment on. That enraged her and she decided not to continue the conversation ending with the statement, «I don’t have to listen to this.» That’s true. But it might be advantageous if you did.

As another reviewer wrote, this is a bad place to consign. I’ve sold items to various consignment stores in the Bay Area before, and this is the only one who does not keep their word. After I dropped off my items in the store, I was told I would be e-​mailed a receipt the next day with the individual costs. In actuality this did not happen for nearly a week, and only after I called them.
When I received the receipt, I was alarmed at some of the prices they were setting for my clothing items. I politely asked if it was possible for them to not mark down my clothing items any further (they have a policy where items are marked down 50% if they do not sell). The e-​mail reply was, «That’s fine I will not mark down your clothing items.» I still have this e-​mail as proof.
Forward three months later, and I find out they had marked down all my clothing items anyway. Many of them sold, so obviously I couldn’t get them back. I voiced the issue, and asked if there was anything they could do. A store credit, or at least admitting they messed up and an offer to make amends. The only reply I got was a blatant denial, «Sorry. We would never have told you that.»
I wish the experience didn’t leave such a bitter taste in my mouth because it’s a lovely store and they do have nice items. As a buyer the store is great, but don’t come here to consign unless you’re ready to give up your clothes for next to nothing.
I’ll be consigning elsewhere.

I am sorry to write this review, but I think that Unilocal deserves a bit of honesty and that this place deserves a reality check.
I’ve bought clothes here once before, and the prices were alright… Pricy, but the stuff is all designer label so it makes sense. Anyway, I walked into the store today and politely asked them if they were buying (because I was selling). The sales lady made a frowny face and was very rude to me. She blew me off, essentially telling me that they only buy when the manager is in and that I needed to set up an appointment. I said ok. While she was looking through her calendar she looked like she couldn’t be bothered to do anything for anyone. I finally got an appointment two weeks out — Nov 1 — but I am not sure if I will even be coming back here after such bad service. I may take my clothes to smaller, lower profile stores… They pay less but at least I know they will treat me with respect. Check out Lost and Found in Sunnyvale. The owner is so nice!!!
That being said, No thanks, Fillmore and Fifth.

Ventured in for the 2^nd time yesterday. Salesgirl was lovely and just as friendly as on my first visit.
The first time I scored a Marc by Marc Jacobs silk top for $ 22. Also saw a ponyhair leopard print YSL Downtown bag for $ 200.
On this visit, found:
Valentino grey lace skirt (with original tags, retails for $ 2000) priced at $ 300 and then an additional 50% off for a final price of $ 150. Too small for me, but gorgeous.
Well-​curated and organized stock, good range of labels from BCBG to Kate Spade to Chloe to Chanel. Loved looking through the racks and seeing pieces for everyone, at every price point.
Never tried to consign, so I can’t speak to that experience.
Definitely stop by here for your labels fix and then venture to Stanford Shopping Center to hug yourself on how much you saved and treat yourself to a Sprinkles cupcake for being such a savvy shopper.

Finally a decent consignment store to browse without having to hoof it to SF.

+ Love that I can potentially discard impulse buys and recoup perhaps by selling through Fillmore & 5^th (another location in SF). The arrangement is standard. Item sold for ¹⁄₃ of retail and is current and designer. You pocket 40% and F&5 gets 60%. After 30 days it gets marked down 20%. After 60 days additional markdowns. After 90 days it goes to charity.
+ Nicely arranged items. Doesn’t smell funny. Rack of shoes are always eye catching if you don’t mind putting your feet where someone else has. Can shoes be professionally dry cleaned?
+ Service is professional and helpful.
+ Selection is hit or miss. You may get a great steal or nothing at all.
The -‘s:
— The 60% may be a standard cut but consider the hassle of eBay. You may net a better return if you don’t mind the hassle of posting and shipping your has-​beens.
TIP: Before bringing your discarded items to resell, check in with the buyer to see what items are in season. For example lugging a fur coat during spring/​summer may not be worth the trip.
