Initially started in 2004 as sole proprietorship called ‘NativeScape’, At that time ‘NativeScape’ was providing landscape consulting, design, and limited installation serviecs.

Recently in 2008, ‘NativeScape’ was incorporated as NativeScape Development Inc. to provide and expanded array of products and services to not only residential clients but also to commercial, industrial and municipal clients. Expanded services include erosion control, irrigation, hardscape, outdoor lighting, decorative water features, and landscape maintenance. Business Owner

Steve Hernandez is President of NativeScape Development Inc., the only landscape firm educating and serving homeowners, business owners, and local governmental agencies on how to effectively achieve authentic, ecologically sustainable landscapes through results oriented design, construction and maintenance in Southern California.

Steve is co-founder and instructor of Urban/Suburban Ecoliteracy, the nation’s first series of place based workshops that teach global citizens the value of ecological responsibility via systems thinking. Steve co-developed an eco-curriculum that emphasizes interactive problem solving, resource relationships in daily living, real world case studies, community building and slow food.

As creator of not only sustainable landscapes but also workshops for ecologically responsible global citizens, Urban/Suburban Ecoliteracy, Hernandez is one of the nation’s leading experts on the topics of not only sustainable landscaping but also ecological pattern literacy.

Is this guy still in business? Everytime I look out at the miserable mess he «created» in my front yard I wish I had never crossed paths with the man! The horrible extra cheap watering system he put in (he charged me $ 1000 for a system that cost roughly $ 50) — as for xeriscaping– the watering system he installed sprays water everywhere– and now all the cheap plastic parts he installed are breaking and I am reduced to hand watering– and the black plastic sticks he said would be hidden by the plants still show terribly because the plants have never done well– I was told he used the wrong ground cover– and it would have to be removed and replaced with real soil– This guy doesn’t know what the heck he is doing but he is arrogant enough to think that you should pay top prices for lousy work.
And if you ever have to take him to court– beware– I took him to court over part of the mess he created– I was encouraged by neighbors to sue for the entire amount but no _I figured some of the blame was mine for not telling him off when it became apparent the job he was doing was terrible– and he was told to pay– and on his own he decided he would make payments although he was expressly told by the court he could not!!! I told him to pay up and he said he only wanted to do what was fair– fair to him apparently because fair to me would have meant he did a good job in the first place-he has no consideration for his employers (me– you whoever hires him) he took months to do a job that should have been done in a couple weeks

I hate lawn. It’s flat and stupid and boring. Its only redeeming quality is that it’s alive, and sometimes it’s green. But it takes a million gallons of water to keep it green, and then if you’re like me, you don’t even use the lawn for anything. I got no kids, no sports equipment, no lawn chairs or plastic flamingoes, nothing. Plus I live in the desert, where we get about ½ inch of rain every two years, so every time I see all that grass I want to cry a little.
So I was looking down my stupid suburban street the other day and I said, «That’s it! I’ve had it! What self-respecting tree-hugging hippie pours water all over useless plants in the third year of a drought? I won’t do it any more!» I stamped my foot and shook my fist in the air.
And then I have these hippie friends who are turning their lawns into vegetable gardens, but that’s another story. Because in this story, I had some dollars saved up, so I called NativeScape and paid them to pull out my lawn (no poison!), plant a ton of drought-tolerant plants, and set up some irrigation.
It probably looks a little out of place in my neighborhood, but that’s kindof the point, and I am so happy! There’s a birdbath and manzanitas and sage and these pink flowers and California poppies… and I am one happy hippie. Not only is it beautiful, I get to stop feeling guilty about wasting water.
And I think the water company will give me a little rebate for doing it.
But don’t just do it for the money… do it for the future. The childrens. And for the birdys.
