Specialties

Our speciality is the teriyaki bowls. The basic bowl has steamed white rice topped with your choice of charbroiled chicken, steak or shrimp or a combination of meats and fresh steamed vegetables. We also have a vegetable bowl which can be ordered with tofu. You may substitute brown rice or noodles for the white rice. Covering it all is our freshly made Hawaiian Teriyaki Sauce. The sauce comes in mild or spicy and the bowl comes in 2 sizes. The bowls are made to order and there here are numerous different ways to order your bowl.

We also have wraps, sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts. Customer favorites are the Maui Iced Tea which is sweetened with pineapple juice and our Maui Rolls appetizer with Wasabi Sauce.

All food is made fresh each day and served to you quickly for a healthy fast food alternative.

Maui Express is a locally owned and operated restaurant, started by Kansas City native Dave Hedrick. His passion is to bring healthy fast food alternatives to his home town that was delicious and affordable.

Business Owner

Dave started Maui Express in 2005 to offer healthy fast food alternatives to the Kansas City area. He fell in love with teriyaki bowl restaurants while living in southern California and wanted to offer this type of food when returning to live in his hometown. When none of the major teriyaki bowl chains would put a restaurant in the Midwest, he opened Maui Express on his own. His unique Hawaiian themed restaurant and recipes gives customers an appealing change of pace for affordable, healthy, fast food dining.

We live down the street from Maui Express and often order it to-​go… because the ambience on the inside is pretty sad. The food is solid if you’re seeking a clean meal quickly. My husband and I like the steak bowls. The Maui roll is pretty grocery store level sushi… If you like fruit tea… the Maui tea is a must try… So so sweet though!
Seems to have a relatively solid following at lunch, but always seems pretty empty around dinner.
I encourage you to order ahead of time online and they’ll bring it out to your car. I believe pricing to be pretty fair. This place could use a brand refresh and a interior makeover and I think it could gain some serious popularity.

I think it’s great for the price. I mean it’s probably not a sit down dinner place but will beat any take out delivery Chinese place in town for sure. It’s a cute little take out place. It’s not the dinner date kind of place. The shrimp are always huge, the chicken is good. This is my first delivery tonight, so I will have to update on that aspect. Good news though… they do deliver! I love the sauce. They offer brown rice or noodles as well which is nice.

First experience there today and it was great! Staff was friendly, helpful and knowledgable. I got my dinner to go and didn’t have to wait long. My food was delicious! Freshly made, presented beautifully and full of flavor. I got the shrimp, chicken, steak combo bowl with rice. Absolutely delicious! I also got one of the yogurt cups and it was an excellent way to finish the meal. I will definitely return. Price was fair too for the amount of food and how good it was. I can’t wait to go back!

I went for an early dinner before orchestra practice. So the place was completely empty. This was my first time here. I ordered a Maui Wrap and thought it was excellent. The chicken was of very high quality (no mystery gristle). Good grill flavor on the chicken too. The veggies were of high quality too. Bright, crisp, and tasty. Oh, and the wrap was not messy at all. I will definitely be back to try other items on their menu.

The food comes in Styrofoam bowls with plastic spoons. For what you pay for I would expect actual dinner ware. The teriyaki dish was ok. A little too much broth for me. But lots of ingredients. Try the Hawaiian tea which I think is just ice tea and pineapple juice but still good none the less.

They take your order and then you hear beep, beep, beep, mmmmm, and you think to yourself «what is that? oh no it couldn’t be…» YEP thats the sound of a microwave cooking your chicken teriyaki bowl. And then you have to order their Muuaaaiii Rolll, which tastes like some white guy from overland park crapped on your plate after he got done eating a california roll from a real sushi chief. Don’t waste your money, please excuse me while I go cleanse my colon…

Simple and sweet. Literally. I ordered the shrimp bowl with brown rice. It came with shrimp, veggies, and brown rice, covered in a what was supposed to be spicy teriyaki sauce. I love spicy, and the sauce was not that. I ended up up adding some sriracha for a little heat. I do love how clean the dish was in terms of simplicity. The rolls were not all that good at all. The Maui iced tea was awesome though.

I’ll keep this short and sweet because there’s nothing spectacular here folks in terms of food. My meal was basically meat, veggies and brown rice with teriyaki sauce. The Maui rolls were blah too but, customer service was great and the food came out fairly quick! Don’t forget to check in on Unilocal for a free Maui ice Tea. My coworker said it was good. I think it’s tea mixed with pineapple juice?

Good god, I love this place so much. My absolute favorite thing is the chipotle luau wrap with chicken. Now that I’m writing this, I’m dying to head over for one right now. It’s delicious. I’ve also had the teriyaki bowls with chicken, steak, or tofu. I don’t do shrimp, but I’m sure it’s good for those who like that sort of thing. I love the mild teriyaki sauce, but sometimes order the spicy and it has a nice kick to it.
I’ve eaten in the restaurant, called in for car side take out, and ordered online for delivery. Every experience is a great one. The owner (Dave, I think?) is super nice and clearly a hard worker. The restaurant itself is always spotless.
The one thing I’d love to see on the menu is a side of vegetables — the ones that typically come in the teriyaki bowl, just without the rice & meat. It would be the perfect side to order with a wrap.

My large chicken teriyaki bowl was delivered to my table about eight minutes after I ordered at the counter. I like that you can specify mild or spicy sauce and choose either white or brown rice. The sauce was delicious, and the chicken was grilled, and tasty. The price was reasonable, the service was professional, and the dining area was clean with background music. Very nice.

This place is so good that I am writing my first Unilocal review –ever. My daughter and I both ate here and got full for a total of $ 7. And the food is fresh and healthy! I recommend the steak wrap combo with the Maui roll. Sooooo good. This place is my new go-​to. Also the service is fantastic.

I checked this place out based on the reviews and was not disappointed. I ordered the Shrimp and Beef Bowl and the tea and both were exceptionally good. Some users said the food was bland but I found it very good. The steamed veges added to the meal and you get a good size portion. I will definitely be making another trip.

It is hard to find good, healthy food around this area. Thank goodness for Maui Express. I eat a spicy steak bowl at least once a week and I never regret it.
I’ve eaten Hawaiian food in Maui and it’s to die for… Thankfully, Maui Express is close to home, so I can get Maui Iced Tea 6 days a week. ;)
I respect that it’s a family owned restaurant and its obvious that they care about their customers. I would give them more stars if I had more available.

We tried almost everything offered between the 7 of us! Very delicious and fun flavor. I read some comments about rude service. We did not come across that the first younger man was a typical 20 – 23 yr old not impolite but not overly friendly then the 2nd middle aged man was very friendly and kind. Everything we tasted had a pleasantly dif flavor than we expected and the veggies were very fresh. Portions were huge for the price, 7 of us (5 kids under 11 but with big appetites) ate for around $ 30! We couldn’t have eaten at a fast food joint for that price. As for the décor, it was a little cliché but hey we live smack dab in the Midwest, what is to be expected for a Hawaiian style? I thought it was cute and most importantly clean. We will be back.

Maui Express is great!
I had the Chicken Teriyaki Bowl with white rice and «spicy sauce» with a side of Miso Soup. The Teriyaki Bowl was great, and even the regular size was thoroughly filling.
Everything is made fresh. It’s a great place to go if you’re looking for a healthier alternative to your typical take out/​delivery place. Service was quick and they were extremely helpful and polite.
I dined inside the very, very casual restaurant, but Maui Express offers take out and delivery too.
Be sure to try the Maui Tea. It’s a little sweet, but I could drink it by the gallon!

Let me start off by saying the interior of this place is hilarious. It feels like an odd mishmash of a not designed restaurant with weird Hawiian décor. The, I assume manager, was there with another teenage kid. It was on the slow side.
Basically everything here is a rice bowl with a teriyaki sauced meat. It is nothing special and seems like making it yourself you’d get some better seasoning out of it. It’s better than fast food but it is definitely not something I crave or would really think of ever going back too. Subpar on every level.
