best place in town for repairs and service. friendly & honest. i am handicapped so they take good care of me. by putting in gas, checking tires, oil, etc. ihave been going there for years…

In and out in 15 minutes! These guys were fast, honest, nice, and not over the top expensive. Just an old fashioned mechanic shop! Definitely will be coming here again!

So I have this theory. The theory basically goes that there aren’t many mechanics in the world these days. That isn’t to say that people don’t call the guys at service stations mechanics, it’s to say that the word mechanic has changed significantly in the past few decades.
My admittedly ignorant view on a person with mechanical aptitude is somebody who likes to figure out how stuff works, and when it’s broken, fix it. Not replace it, but fix it.
Most mechanics that I’ve worked with over the past several years, at dealerships and chain repair centers (Good Year, Firestone, Meineke, etc) don’t actually fix anything. They replace things until a car runs again.
Then there are old school mechanics. They’re increasingly hard to find. Perhaps there are good reasons for this, I know the world is a complicated place, and Unilocal maybe isn’t the ideal venue to lament the passing of the mechanics of the world.
Mac’s 66 is different. This guy is a mechanic. He wears the cover alls, and damn it, the guy FIXES things. After going to a Firestone shop twice, each time waiting about two hours to be seen, and then the same experience at my dealership, all they wanted to do was replace a part that I was pretty sure could be repaired. Each day I drive by Mac’s 66 on my commute and after getting fed up about everybody telling me I needed to spend $ 170 on a new part plus $ 100 for labor, I saw the mechanic in Mac’s reading the paper in his own waiting room, and swung in. Told him the issue.
Twelve minutes later he told me it was all done. He FIXED it. Charged me $ 13 and told me he hopes to see me again someday.
Mechanics. There’s at least one alive and well and he’s on Metcalf & 81^st.
