This is a nice clean sporting goods store that’s surprisingly large. My son loves to visit this store, specifically for their shooting sports area. The gentlemen behind the counter are super knowledgeable with all the questions that a young person just getting started has. They have helped him mount his scope and explain the different types of ammo for his rifle and just overall been very educational and never high pressure with us.

Has a wide variety of sports selections for both adults and kids. Whether it be golfing, archery, soccer or basketball they have what you need. This Store is a little bigger than others and had more selection. They also sell local collegiate items if you were looking for K-State or KU apparel. Not bad but the cashier line was a little slow with 2 x cashiers on a busy day.. Therefore… just 4 stars this time.

Awesome selection of shoes! Honestly, I was able to find shoes here that I couldn’t find anywhere else at great prices.

Customer service is nonexistent! Had 2 refunds processed and only one posted to my credit card account. Manager wouldn’t address, Team Lead was clueless, gave me toll free helpline. Complete runaround! Been over a week and issue still unresolved. Disputed with my credit card company. I will never set foot in this chain again! Never. Bottom line… Horrible customer service and clueless management! Stay away.

Academy Sports and Outdoor has pretty well cornered the sports market. Are you playing team sports like football, baseball or soccer? You can find all of the equipment and playing apparel that you need and then some. How about individual sports like cross country, golf, fishing, hunting or swimming? There are plenty of options that you can browse through. On top of this the store is well staffed with employees who really do want to help you. I have had a small hiccup. Recently I stopped in and the store was out of baseballs. This was in May. They did have some practice balls, but I wanted an official Major League ball so I could take it to an event and be signed. I was out of luck and the poor associate tried to locate some, but was unable. He did offer to order it online for me, which was nice, but I needed it quicker than 5 to 7 business days. That situation didn’t work out, but I will say Academy Sports is a welcome addition to the metro and I’m glad they’re here.

The manager at the Olathe store was a total jerk. He refused to honor a local business check and treated me like i was some sort of thief. He actually said he had no authority to exercise any judgment. There’s lots of options in Kansas City for sports stuff, who wants to do business with a store like this???

This is my new favorite store. For hunting and fishing the selection and prices are way better than I anticipated. When they first opened I thought it was going to be just another stupid JOCO soccer mom store like Dick’s. Boy oh boy was I ever wrong! Every time I go in and wander around I am more amazed with the wide range of cool stuff they have crammed in this place, and it does not feel crammed at all. There is always someone to help if you have questions, but they are not pushy or annoying. They could do away with the Wal-Mart style greeter at the front door and my feelings would not be hurt.

I didn’t really know what to expect when I got told I was coming here(or strongly pushed their by my husband). However, after walking in, I was pleasantly surprised. This place is like a Dick’s Sporting goods meets Cabelas/Bass Pro… only they actually have things in stock. We ended up walking every inch of the store and in the midst of holiday shoppers, only stood in line a couple of minutes. I’m impressed!

To me, this is the best sporting department store in the KC area. They cover all the basics. They’re staff is pretty friendly for the most part and the prices are competitive. I’d choose this place over Dick’s or Sports Authority any day.

Really impressed with my first trip to Academy, just a stone’s throw from my neighborhood. Unlike other sports«box» retailers around the area, Academy seems to have more products, departments, and staff at your disposal. I was pleasantly surprised to see that prices were clearly better than the other retailers as well. Chiefs, Royals, Jayhawks, Wildcats hats for under 20 bucks, well priced new golf equipment, and friendly staff to greet you around every corner to check in with your needs. This is an all-star environment.

It’s like Dick’s Sporting Goods, only they play country music.

I’m so glad this area finally got an Academy Sports! I was so used to going to them in Texas and Oklahoma. They put Dick’s to shame on prices and stock. They always have some type of sports apparel on sale. We got something like 5 pairs of shorts and 6 or 8 shirts for somewhere around $ 40. A few of the shirts were $ 2.99. Pretty cool considering this place just opened. The guns and ammo are the cheapest around. Even during all the mayhem with gun supplies over the past year they always refused to increase their prices. The AR-15 I bought 4 years ago in Oklahoma is the same price today. They had lots of guns and ammo when I was there a few days ago. Lots of AR’s and even cases of .556. Can’t wait until they open one on the Missouri side so handguns will be available to those of us who don’t live in OZ! Welcome, Academy!
