History

Established in 2013.

For Jose Nevarez, his dream of coming to America began as a dishwasher at his cousin’s family-owed Mexican restaurant.

More than a decade later he is managing Agave Fresh Mex & Cantina, his family’s first restaurant in Volusia County.

«We’re going to have a little of everything — a variety,» he said. «We’re going to do the best to treat the people well and make them come back.»

On July 10, Nevarez and his family will have a grand opening for the restaurant, which is in the Ormond Towne Square Shopping Center at 1474 West Granada Blvd.

History has proven the Nevarez family’s business will likely do well.

In 1997, Pedro Nevarez and his wife, Gloria, opened their first restaurant, Ay Jalisco, in Vero Beach. Since then, they have opened six additional locations including another location in Vero Beach and one each in Sebastian, The Villages, Clermont, North Palm Beach and Wellington. Jose Nevarez was there when the first restaurant opened.

Business Owner

In 1997, Pedro Nevarez and his wife, Gloria, opened their first restaurant, Ay Jalisco, in Vero Beach. Since then, they have opened six additional locations including another location in Vero Beach and one each in Sebastian, The Villages, Clermont, North Palm Beach and Wellington.

Jose Nevarez was there when the first restaurant opened.

«They started me out at the bottom,» he said of his stint as a dishwasher and later as a cook and waiter. «We have to know how to do a little bit of everything to take care of the entire business.»

He said his cousin came to Ormond Beach about 10 years ago in search of a location to open another restaurant.

«He got busy,» he said.

But for the past seven months, the family has been transforming the storefront location and had a soft opening on Sunday July 1st, 2013. Agave will employ about 15 workers, Jose Nevarez said.
