Every forest preserve area has its strengths and weaknesses. While I’d have liked a few more options here there are plenty of positive points. First remember that you MUST have a Cook County Forest Preserve permit to use one of the 100’s of shelters in the network. Most summer weekends they are all reserved so plan ahead for what you need and where you’d like to be. The positives of this specific grove: * It’s a one shelter grove. You’ll be the only one using the entrance, parking, and fields. Keeps things more private. * The shelter and picnic tables are all fairly new. * There is a lot of space to spread out and it’s all grass so no bare dirt patches. * Very little traffic noise. You feel secluded. * Lots of parking including handicap spots. The negative of this grove: * 135th street doesn’t go through and some guests had a hard time getting here. * no water pump like some older preserves have. * no hiking paths through the large wildflower and marshy areas to explore plants and animals. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this grove again and hope some day in the future that they add some paths through the vast plot of land here.
