Description

Specialties

We offer English Riding Lessons, Summer Day Camps, Birthday Parties, Girl Scout Troops Badges, Horse Boarding and Training. We specialize in beginner riders ages 3 to adult.

We have 12 lesson horses and teach all students on an individual basis at their own speed. We teach a Natural Aides training system, where you learn to communicate with the horse in their language, rather than pretrain them to specific cues. Our goal is to teach riders how to ride any horse they come across, how to ride them safely and most importantly, to have FUN! Open 7 days a week year round.

History

Established in 1976.

Hillside Training Stables began in Southern California teaching riders in a public arena. Our horses were boarded at private residences and we began with only 2 horses. Kathleen Pead, the owner and Head Instructor went to school in England in 1973 to become an Instructor/Trainer, and Barn Manager. She is certified BHSAI. She really enjoyed Dressage and Cross Country riding and when she moved to Sacramento in 1986, she opened her own facility in Orangevale, teaching 3 Day Eventing: Dressage, Stadium Jumping and Cross Country. She had 4 lesson horses and grew into what is now 12. Our Summer Camps are always full every year, and our Mommy & Me classes for 3&4 years old is very popular, along with students who learn to ride more advanced horses over time. Some buy their own horses, and we make sure they find the right one.

Kathleen P.

Business Owner

Began riding small ponies at 3 every weekend at an amusement park. At 6 she rented trail horses near LAX Airport on Saturdays year-round and on every vacation, even in 115 degree heat! At 15 she got her own horse, working to pay for his expenses. After graduating from high school she attended Porlock Vale Riding School in England, attending the British Horse Society’s Instructor program. At 19 she furthered her education in Elk Grove, CA at Pacific Horse Center where she received her AHSA Instructors Certification. In 1976 she returned to LA and resumed teaching, boarding her horses and using public arenas. In 1982 she married and lived in Australia, teaching Western riding lessons! Back in California in 1984, she taught in public arenas until she moved to Orangevale in 1986, where she finally had her own facility! She now specializes in new riders of all ages, using Natural Aides training methods.
