Tom Hohman’s crew completed a 77 foot block wall on my property and they did it in 3 days! The wall is 6 feet high and replaced a rotten wood fence. The crew was large and obviously knew what they were doing. All the product arrived on the first day, the old fence removed, the trench was dug and filled with concrete for the footings and the blocks put in place. Communication was easy as the crew always asked if I had any questions. Received many bids for this project, but none were so complete and detailed. Cannot be more thrilled with their work and the clean up was to perfection!

Tom and his team just completed a block planter for us around a 35′ slope in our front yard. The estimate was fair and the work was done flawlessly. I chose Tom for the work, primarily due to his recommendations to me on how to create a better looking project. This showed me that his intent was not only to get the work but to create an end-​product that we would be proud of.
Tom himself was available multiple times a day to check on the work and explain any issues or answer any questions. His staff was extremely professional and they made sure the area was completely cleaned at the end of the day.
The end result was beautiful and exceeded our expectations.

I had major chimney brick and mortar problems with my 1976 built townhouse and Yom was both extremely responsive and fair with his pricing. Even with weather issues Tom continued to keep me posted on a daily basis on when he would be back to finish as soon as weather permitted.
His crew was efficient and kept the property clean after both days on the job. Most importantly he stands behind his work.

Tom demoed a huge tree stump, our old patio concrete and a back wall that screwed up the layout. He put in a beautiful new patio and redid the concrete under our A/​C unit. How team worked quick and the price was more than fair. We’re so happy with the work he’s done!

Tom and his crew replaced the broken damper in our fireplace and all the broken and cracked bricks and mortar in the firebox. We had a pipe break under our driveway and found Tom Hohman Masonry on Unilocal after several failed attempts to have our driveway repaired by other contractors. Tom immediately returned my call, arrived early to his appointment to view the project, started the exact date he promised and supervised his crew throughout the repair. I was kept in the loop via text since I could not be on site during the day. Our driveway turned out amazing and he was even able to match the concrete to the existing portion as well as finish a day earlier than anticipated. We could not be more thrilled and will recommend him to anyone needing masonry work. It turns out he even completed the nearby Urth Caffe in Laguna Beach just before starting our project. Truly a great experience.

We had Tom and his skilled crew install some stairs on either side of our hillside home recently. I have to say that they are first class all the way. Arrived on-​time, were professional, did not yell or do anything obnoxious, included a rental ports-​potty for the 4 day job, kept a very clean work/​staging area, were friendly, and none of them were smokers (which I have to admit I really enjoyed since we love clean air and I don’t enjoy picking up butts from other contractors we’ve had working on our home). Also, Tom made great suggestions upon our initial site walk/​consultation that helped get us what we wanted (safe site access around our home) while making it look wonderful and stylish as well. We have a few nicely constructed concrete bulkheads with patterned wood details from the forms, coupled with treated lumber steps and a DG step infill that blends perfectly with the rustic but contemporary feel of our property.
And as for their work, it speaks for itself. As mentioned, we have a home on the side of a hill with challenging site conditions (poor site access, a narrow long one-​way driveway w/​o much of any parking, multiple trees, decks, multiple posts and foundations at various levels, etc.). They were able to do the job, complete it on schedule, and did it for less cost than our original estimate despite a few changes along the way that would ordinarily have resulted in a change order at higher cost. So we ended up with a fantastic addition to our home that we and our 1 year old will soon be enjoying for years to come.
A truly honest contractor who we trust and would emphatically recommend without hesitation.

I needed to build a foundation of my office extension to the house. I found Tom through a local Google search, and selected him because of his positive reviews. It was an excellent choice. I could not be home, so Tom photo documented the construction. The work was done in three days, as if nothing had ever happened. Every night when I came home, his professional crew had cleaned their work area, so there was no mess around, which made my wife happy. Tom’s prices were a bit higher than other quotes I had obtained, but it was worth it. I got what I paid for. Let me add that he is also a very likeable person.

Tom just finished redesigning and installing a new concrete walkway and two planters at my home. He also removed a rotting stucco wall and three other old brick planters. Tom has artistic vision, and his great suggestions made it possible for us to completely update the front of our 40 year old home. Left a phone message, no response. Went to the website and as instructed on the contact page, and booked a schedule with him. Still no response. Either he’s not working anymore or must be cherry-​picking what projects he chooses. I guess that’s his choice and quite understandable. So here we are, my review as I’ve experienced it. And yes, «Meh, I’ve experienced Better.»

Had a couple of small jobs requiring new cement. Called several contractors, but Tom was the most professional in every way. He showed up on time, very knowledgable, fair quote. When he and his team came out to do the work, it was done just as we had agreed, EVERYTHING was cleaned up when they left,

What an amazing experience we just had with Tom Hohman Masonry.
A couple of weeks ago we had some pretty nasty winds that blew over a fence in our backyard. I looked for to get several estimates as we were going to go through our insurance company do to the fact that the damage was pretty severe and we were looking to replace approx. 64 lf. of block wall.
I called Tom based on his Unilocal reviews and let me tell you, his reviews are every bit as accurate as they read. Greeted with a very friendly hello and a willingness to do whatever it was I needed, I never really looked back.
Tom came out to my house the same afternoon we called and met my wife. He was very friendly and very professional with her. He assessed the damage, took all the measurements and then took pictures of everything on his ipad. He never once tried to upsell anything. He actually said he could put the wall back the way it was or he could rebuild it. Obviously putting it back would have been much cheaper. While talking with my wife he showed and explained what had failed on our wall and would be different from the old wall and a new wall. (when asked what he would do he never said «I would do this or I would do that» he said «let me show you what damages have occurred to your wall and why»)
That night we were presented with a proposal for the work. He gave us the price to fix and the price to replace. After submitting the work to our insurance company we were told an adjuster would come out to review as well as a couple words on the estimate needed to be changed. Without hesitation Tom changed all the necessary wording (twice) and within hours of the request.
Once the claim was approved the timing seemed to work out perfectly. Tom told me his crew could be there on Tuesday (claim was settled Monday) to demo and he needed 4 days total to get the new wall up. Well, today is Friday and our wall done first thing in the morning today. Beautiful and perfect. I would actually say in the area they were working in, the sod and planters look better now after their work.
Tom and his crew were super friendly and super clean. Our neighbors all commented on how efficiently they worked, how courteous and how clean they were.
I highly recommend Tom and his crew for all masonry work. He will without a doubt be the one doing the rest of the work we need around out home.
BTW, most Unilocal people like to understand prices. We got the customary 3 bids. We even had several contractors stop by assess the wall and write a bid without us even calling them (they just drove by, saw the damage and decided to write an estimate). Tom’s prices were all super competitive and inline with everyone. There were without a doubt higher ones and even the non-​licensed guys who just wrote bids on the work weren’t a whole lot less. Tom Hohman Masonry was very fair and his work was exceptional!!!

As Good as it Gets
The short answer, hire Tom and his company of craftsman, period. His work is the highest quality with very fair prices.
I met Tom through a friend that doesn’t give recommendations lightly. I find that I am the same way. I might recommend 2 out of 5 companies, maybe. But in the case of Tom’s work, I highly recommend him and his work.
The first time I had a job to offer, I got the standard three bids. I found cheaper and more expensive. The cheaper bid scared me because of incompetence. The expensive bid was an established company that was hoping I didn’t get three bids. The work involved cutting 17″ of existing pool decking around my pool. The pool will move slightly and cause cracks in the decking. Hence we removed the direct contact and installed coping. Coping is a fancy word for a very hard stone, that abuts the pool edge. I watched Tom and his crew work. I was amazed how he measured and remeasured his work. Perfection in his work is not an accident, it is a dedicated effort to get it right.
We have lived in this home for 25 years. We have had pool work done in the past. I can tell you nightmare stories of people that talk well and work like a rookie. But Tom got the tile line absolutely straight and level over the distance of 40′. The previous tile line was crooked by over an inch. When the previous tile work was completed, I paid the man his quoted price. Now mind you the pool was empty, the work looked fine. He leaves, the pool is filled and right there you notice the problem. Now most people that visit the house didn’t notice. But I did because I have to fill the pool with water every week. And I had to be sure to look to the correct location of a certain tile to ascertain the level of the water. If I looked to a different spot the water would be too low for the skimmer. And I don’t want to pay for a bad pool pump.
Once the coping was installed, he then added the material that is installed between the coping and the pool deck. Again, it was like watching an artist at work. The material is a liquid that once it dries becomes firm but not hard. He added a little bit of sand on top of that material and let it set for one day. He came back the next day and cleaned everything to, again I know, perfection. Are you starting to see a pattern? I didn’t have to pick up errand tools, trash or repair something broken in my back yard like I have with other companies when they were done. My surrounding plants were covered so that dust would not harm them. My back yard, the walkway to the front and the driveway was swept and washed. Nice touch Tom.
On the second job, I only got Tom’s bid. Never mind the rest. He replaced a 6′ dogeared wood fence with a 5.5′ slump-​stone. Tom and his crew went to great lengths to find what I wanted. Tom gave me great suggestions on how to connect the new wall with an existing fence of my neighbor. Once I told him that I liked the plan, he gave me a date within a week. The crew removed my plants that were near the wood fence and replanted them where they could get water. They dug the trench, removed the concrete mounds that used to hold the wood posts. For strength they tied into an existing perpendicular slump-​stone wall. The trenches looked to me to be almost 18″ deep. The worker told me that they were 12″. I know that this is an area of work where a contractor can save money. Dig the trenches a little more shallow, less time and material. No one will notice if it is not as deep as it should, until it falls over. I am telling you, that trench was at least 12″ maybe 16″. There is no skimping on the quality of work that Tom does, period.
Once this wall was built, the crew cleaned everything up. They reinstalled my plants, and even planted a few potted plants too. Where they had laid plywood on my grass to protect it, they checked it for any foreign material. And then they watered the lawn. They even noticed my very old wood gate that is not attached to the work needed some repair. Some of the screws had worked themselves out. I watched one of the workers put some wood shims in the holes and tighten up the latch. I know he did not have to do that at all. They actually left the yard better then they found it! If I wasn’t home to watch; it is as if the fence was removed and the wall appeared with a wave of the wand. I haven’t seen this quality of work in a long time.
The pool solution was an answer to a nagging problem that we have had for many years. Tom is the one that came up with this quality solution. He took an old pool and made it look modern. If you have a similar problem, contact Tom. He can show you a few pictures of a great solution.

We just (finally!) completed a fairly major addition and renovation on our home. Tom Hohman is far and away the most professional, highest quality, and simply the best, contractor that we came into contact with. He did an outstanding job on the demolition of our old driveway and walkway and the construction of a new scored, colored concrete driveway, walkway etc. He takes pride in his work and it really shows in the finished product — our driveway is just beautiful. Our job was started on time, finished quickly and cleaned up thoroughly. On top of all this, Tom is just a really nice guy. I can not say enough about Tom Hohman Masonry!

Tom Hohman is outstanding. My Mom’s house was in escrow when the La Habra earthquake caused damage to her chimney and fireplace. Though his schedule was booked, Tom made arrangements to assess the damage, give me an estimate and start the work as soon as possible. Prompt, courteous, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Tom Hohman Masonry built a stuccoed block wall between our house & the neighbors. He handled the city permit process. He made sure the his crew understood the daily tasks and had all the supplies & manpower they required. After reading the Unilocal*reviews and visiting his website, I called for an estimate. After talking to Tom, I didn’t even seek an additional bid. He may be «just a dumb old bricklayer» but he sure knows how to run a small business based on customer satisfaction. The only downside to the experience, is now I have more masonry projects in mind!

I needed someone to come and put cement tops of the concrete block wall I had cut down so that we could enjoy our view.
I tried calling everyone tradesman in the area and no one wanted this small job.
I realized that I forgot to look on Unilocal and BAM I found Tom.
We talked for five minutes about what my job entailed we emailed each other that night and at 1:30 the next day he showed up with his crew and by 3:30 my wall was done.

I found Tom on Unilocal and called him because of his good reviews. I hadn’t had great luck finding someone to help me finish my fireplace. He seemed knowledgeable
so we hired him. I’m glad we did! He did a fantastic job cleaning up and finishing our fireplace. He really cared about doing it right. I had bought some lava rocks to use, but after looking at them, he went out and picked up some better ones. He didn’t have to do that, but I was so glad he did! Both Tom and his worker, Chino,
were really nice to talk to and took great care of my house. They were super clean! He went above and beyond in all aspects of his work. I will use him again in the future.

Tom is a Pro, he is on the ball. Prompt to follow up on emails and phone calls. Easy going and does not seem to be out to rip anyone off. He stands by his work with pride.
New home owner, so this is only my second job I have contracted out. I am renovating the backyard and started with a standard block wall. Tom knows what needs to be done and will get your job done before moving on to his next project. I never felt like my job was second fiddle. Job site was clean as possible at the end of each day,
I will be remodeling the pool and hard scape and hope to be working with Tom on that as well. If you have a job, give Tom a call and he will give you a fair honest bid.

A very professional contractor in all ways! I had about a 60 sq. ft. portion of my concrete driveway with some pretty bad cracking that needed replacement. So not a big job at all. Regardless, Tom showed up on time to all appointments and was friendly and courteous.
The final product was excellent and the repair work looks really good (they really know their trade and did a great job in matching the existing concrete). The driveway was also left very clean. Their pricing was very competitive too as compared to other estimates.
I am recommending Tom very highly and would give him 7 stars if I could!

Man what a life saver! I needed to replace 6 bricks in the middle of a chimney due to Direct TV putting concrete anchors in the bricks to hold the satellite dish.
Needles to say I was not aware of this when they installed the dish. After a super upset landlord and almost being evicted over a dish that a I did not authorize to install on the chimney I had negotiated that I would fix the anchors in the brick. The unforgiving landlord rescinded his eviction notice!
Now he sends out a guy who shows up in a broken down truck that stalls when he goes to leave after the estimate for work repair.
2 days later I get an estimate for $ 1100.00 all it says is 6 bricks and his name and the cost??? WTF…
I did research and could not even find the guy on the internet. The landlord chose this guy.
I decided to get 2 more quotes on my own
1^st company charged me 70 $ to just come out and were $ 650.00.
Tom Hohman Masonry shows up (no charge) The owner himself (Tom) tells me there really is no need to remove and replace the bricks its cheaper to just fill the wholes and it will not mess with the integrity. Mind you this option which Tom suggested was 3^rd less of the cost (filling in the holes). Much easier and less costly.
Told the landlord that he says «no way replace it!»
By the way when Tom came out he had an Ipad took pictures well spoken and knowledgeable. Said he would email the quote in a few hours.
He did it was itemized and had letter head everything you would hope a legitimate company would have.
Scheduled the job at 8 am he was on time.
Curious workers clean and professional the whole way.
Guess what the quote he gave me it actually was less expensive and he charged me less!!!
Cant say enough about the owner and the workers.
Seems like a lot of hoopla for 6 bricks but you would not believe the anxiety and stress 6 bricks and an A-​hole landlord can cause.
