Halgren’s Candies

Wonderful craftsman home with lots of parking. They have great chocolate here, but you have to check and ask when it was made. Some of the other goodies dont look as fresh. Just my observation.

The cutest candy shop I’ve ever seen. Lived down the street for 25 years and I can remember it being there since I was little. Very original and the guy is super kind. The treats are wonderful and delicious. Chocolate strawberries are the best. My husband goes there when he surprises me with anything. I love that place.

Stopped in to pick up a dozen chocolate strawberries as well as 2 Carmel apples. My wife and I devoured them! Both the apples and strawberries were freshly made and incredible! Would recommend to anyone passing by.

OMG! I just bit into one of the large mint truffles and it was FILLED with fuzzy mold! When I called and told them about it, they said the owner was «out of the country» and that it was just grease. If it looks like mold, smells like mold, and tastes like mold… it’s MOLD! I will NEVER come here again. Hopefully I even survive the night…

How come the city of Ontario gets to have two, yes two, old fashioned candy stores? This one is in the cutest old Craftsman home, with painted white candy display cases that are probably original to the store, lots of dark wood, and simply oozing with charm. A trip down nostalgia lane, x2.
Enter slowly, dear friend, then pause. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. You have been transported back to 1957, of old fashioned, handmade chocolates, frozen chocolate dipped bananas, chocolate dipped strawberries and pretzels, and familiar but hard to find candies I remember from wayyyyy back when. Then open your eyes, and there they are, those vintage display cases filled with trays of hand formed candies, fudge, those beautiful chocolate dipped strawberries everyone raves about, and bags of caramel corn. The remainder of the lobby is wall to wall shelves of teddy bears of many colors (all rather creepy in my opinion). My guess is, this place hasn’t changed a thing in almost 60 years.
A great place to bring the kids and grandkids. Just make sure you have brought some straight jackets for the ride home. For them, silly, not you! And if your significant other comes home bearing gifts from this place, you need to grab them and run. Well, maybe not if it is a creepy pink bear. Ask questions later.

Ok this place is the best and so cute my husband surprised me one day with chocolate covered strawberries from here and omg they were the best I ever had Their Chocolate covered strawberries are seriously the best !!! They are to die for I started going here every week or so for the strawberries it’s definitely the number one place to get them

YES. The chocolate strawberries here are AMAZING ! The best I’ve ever tasted. They arent coated with a thin layer chocolate but a thick delicious layer of chocolate. My boyfriend got me a dozen on Valentine’s Day and it was the best tasting ever, they also have a combination of milk chocolate, white chocolate, and dark chocolate (my fav). You cannot fail with their strawberries, I’ve yet to try anything other than the strawberries but the chocolate is definitely rich and delicious. good quality chocolate.

The strawberries are made fresh to order. Everything else though had an old haze on them so I’m afraid to buy them. Cute shop though!

I love this place. The chocolate covered strawberries are the bomb! (Oh yeah, I totally brought out 90’s slang for this review) My husband loves the chocolate malt too. Malt isn’t my cuppa tea but I trust him when he says halgren’s is his favorite.

This place is amazing! Running since 1957, it has never disappointed me. Their chocolate covered strawberries are made fresh and are incredible to say the least. If you’re looking for an awesome treat, try their caramel apples or wine infused chocolate.
Finally, to top off all of their goodies, they had a friendly and appreciative staff.

I am so in love with their white chocolate strawberries! Sooo delicious! The milk chocolate covered strawberries are very good too, but I prefer white chocolate!

Okay, so I’ve been coming to this place for years and I’ve yet to so much as derive a complaint let alone experience one from any person who’s received the chocolate from Halgren’s as a gift of some sort.
The chocolate covered strawberries come in both white and dark chocolate and are a definite mouth watering alternative to Edible Arrangements not to mention being a heck of a lot more friendly on your wallet.
What I’ll completely vouch for would be that of customer service. This place has definitely got it. It’s easy to derive how repeat customers such as myself, obtained their name (s).
Case in point, I phoned the establishment from my office in LA with regards to the place’s business hours (10 — 630… duhhh — it’s listed when you Google their name, smh) and upon the employee answering — he not only remembered my voice and place of business from a previous purchase I’d made, but he even agreed to stay a bit after hours provided I called while I was in route to confirm still being on my way.
That’s as good as it gets!!! Try getting Edible Arrangements to stay over!!!
This place also has a wine-​infused chocolate (gada’ love that!!!) I believe the wine to be Port but it’s definitely worth checking into.
As for the display chocolate not being so fresh… can’t say that I’ve ever had chocolate from beneath the counter but this does prompt me to raise an eyebrow. That’s kinda’ guh’ross—

The only thing this company needs to improve is the consistent freshness of the product. I have only experienced the chocolate not being so fresh once but a lot of the ones on display you can tell are old. Overall this is not a bad place and when the chocolate is fresh… YUMMMM!!!

This is actually quite near another chocolate shop that I think I like slightly better. This is tucked into a cute little house (the Ontario tourist materials call it a «historic house» almost right under the 10.
They’re best known for their chocolate covered strawberries, which are made fresh. As in you order them and they go back and dip them. Yes, the ones in the glass case look rather old — take a closer look; they’re plastic strawberries dipped in chocolate for display. Though some of the sugar-​free chocolate did look as if it had been there for a while.
The creams are square — not rounded-​off square which I’ve seen before, but SQUARE with sharp corners. The woman I bought mine from said it helps them make them faster. The chocolate is all Barry Callebaut, so I expected a slightly higher grade of chocolate. The chocolate coating itself doesn’t impress. This place has been in business since 1957, and the centers do feature some pretty intense artificial colors. Centers are a little pasty, not unpleasantly so, but if you like runny fondants (I don’t) you might not like them. They make their own peanut brittle, which is nice, and sell it dipped in chocolate, which is brilliant. They also sell chocolate covered nougat, which is very nice indeed. The strawberries were all right but nothing particularly exciting; nice, and likely a good gift.
They also feature a selection of old-​timey candies (Cherry Mash, Valomilk, etc. — including in dark), many of which you can find at Ontario’s other chocolate store, though they carry the Idaho Spud Bar, which I’ve never seen for sale anywhere.
Worth a trip. And if you need to impress someone, a box of chocolate-​dipped strawberries makes a nice hostess gift. 3 stars overall but I’m bumping it to 4 stars for the chocolate-​covered nougat and the chocolate covered peanut brittle.

I was very excited to find out there has been a chocolate store hiding from me all this time in the area.
We made our way over to this house that reminds me of a place ive been to before out of state.
We ordered a bunch of chocolate from under the counter and my wife ordered some chocolate strawberries from a very nice lady behind the counter.
Now from the look of this place on the inside i was afraid that alot of the chocolate has been sitting there for awhile and i think i was right.
Everything we ordered from under the counter had the same weird old taste, like it aborbed the counter from stting there.
It was very disappointing. My wife did like the strawberries, she said they are good but not the best she has had.
If i ever go back i will have to find out when they have made something fresh.

Great people. Looks are intimidating, so head in anyway. They have a huge variety of chocolate and their chocolate dipped strawberries are fantastic.

I saw this place one day while I was house sitting for my brother, and I was taking his son to work. It’s summer time so what caught my eye originally was their «Hawaiian Shaved Ice» sign, so after picking my nephew up from work, we decided to stop in for a shaved ice! It was so soft, like snow, and the flavors were really good, I had watermelon, and very cooling! I decided to buy some fudge for my husband when I went back home in a couple days, and I got myself the Pecan Turtle.(which I saved for when I got back to my house) Wow! It was delicious. The caramel was so buttery and they used whole Pecans, and the chocolate. Ohhhh, the chocolate covering all this goodness was soooo rich and creamy, I have been back again, and I got chocolate covered haystacks, another Pecan Turtle and more shaved ice, I wish I lived closer to Ontario, I’d be there every day for those shaved ices!

Chocolate lovers rejoice! This little unassuming spot is located behind a shopping center and across from a motel, but don’t let the location fool you. This heavenly chocolate lover’s dream is located in a gingerbread type house and is full of goodies to satisfy any sweet tooth. They have chocolate covered everything! From brownies to Rice Krispy treats to marshmallows and even (my personal favorite) strawberries! They are juicy and sweet and HUGE! This place is a perfect spot for Valentine’s day if you want to set the mood with a few chocolate covered strawberries. The price range is a little higher than your typical chocolate shops, but the taste cannot be compared to any other chocolatier. They also have delectable, juicy, gigantic chocolate covered apples. If you are planning on stopping by, call because they close early (that is the only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). I could literally move into Halgren’s and die a happy woman.

LOVE THIS PLACE!!! They have a HUGE variety of chocolates. It’s a small but cute Victorian House converted into a chocolate store!
