The Autumn Cafe

Throwback to my hippy days (sort of). Great atmosphere, service and interesting food. Beer and wonderful waitress. Buy a loaf of their baked whole wheat bread… to die for! I’ll be back!

(Dec2015) REUBEN — to die for! I’m certain that this is the tastiest reuben we’ve ever had. Delicious: fresh meat, crunchy bread, good proportion on the sauerkraut, and delectable sauce. (Chips seemed kind of stale??? But who cares with a sandwich this yummy?!)
We appreciated the $ 3.50 glass of beer as an alternative to the $ 5 pint. It was nice having the smaller portion for an afternoon lunch with family. We’d like seeing more stouts & porters though – hard to come by in this town! (Not fans of IPA or ales – dark all the way)
This little café on Main St has a lot of character. The artwork, the bar, the chalkboard menu, and the generously portioned food we all ate made our visit special. One of our group ordered the apple crisp & shared it. Very tasty. Not a huge portion, but the fruit & sweet crusty topping were delicious. Thanks!

Fairly standard fare but well executed and with friendly, attentive service. Had the two eggs any style (sunny side up) that was served with potatoes and thick-​sliced whole wheat with butter. Coffee was aromatic and delicious. Recommended!

I am not giving them a one star because the food sucks. In fact their food is amazing! I highly recommend the Aztec Enchilada. I’m gluten free and vegitarian so it’s awesome! I am giving them 1 star because of their odd hours and menu changes. I have tried on different occasions to order the Aztec Enchilada. 1^st time they decided to close early. 2^nd time again they closed at an odd hour. 3^rd time they said they only did brunch. My family and I won’t be going back. Unless you can spend time going to the actual café during a weekday (if they decide not to close early) it’s not worth it.

This would have been 5 stars for the view, the service and the food but the wait for sunday brunch at over 50 minutes from when we placed the order just seemed a bit ridiculous for eggs benedict and a breakfast burrito — both on the regular Sunday menu.
So be prepared to wait and enjoy the view (and the sun!)

Had chicken fajitas. They were ok. Salsa was great! Service is ok. My son ordered quesadilla. After 20 min the waitress came back and told my 10 year old not me that he couldn’t have it to chose another item off their already limited menu. I asked why since it was just tortilla and cheese and she responded rudely, the kirchen said they can’t do it. This was my least favorite dining experience for food and service in Oneonta and I ate at several places. Go to Jays Place its awesome!

What an adorable little place. It was recommended to me and I can see why. I had one of their numerous specials which consisted of yummy chicken salad (made with grapes, apples, and all kinds of yummy stuff), served on a bed of spinach. It was delicious. And then to make it even better, I had an iced Chai which was absolutely wonderful. The waitress was friendly and very sweet; added to the place for sure! Highly recommend this restaurant if you’re in the area.

We thought brunch on a Sunday when colleges were out of session would be a prime time to go. Still busy but they got us seated quickly and even though food was slow, wait staff were attentative and kept the water filled. Sit on the deck (if it’s open) and enjoy the view. Breakfast burrito was tasty.

Slowest service ever! Can’t say how the food is because it’s 45 minutes and omelette still isn’t here.

Priced reasonably and has a very solid beer selection. The quesadillas I had I felt were just average but in talking to the other people at the bar everyone seemed to enjoy their meals.
I would definitely return.

I’ve done it all here — brunch, lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. The food is always dependably good and the atmosphere is laid back. The hot open tofu with mixed veggies is fantastic, as is the eggs benedict on Sundays. There is a reason this place has been there forever — it’s consistently good.

Very casual place with a few solid vegan options. I got the open face veggie with tofu and it was super hearty and flavorful. The gravy on it was really good and the tofu was cooked perfectly. I left feeling full.

Never disappointed! Great food for a fair price. Super selection of unique beer & wine!
Service is so-​so sometimes, but it is a college town, expected.

Two omnivores and two vegans were all very happy with this restaurant. The Aztec Enchiladas were out of this world. The Jamaican Rice and Beans were outstanding. My son had nachos that he was very pleased with and my dad a chicken sandwich. Everyone left very full and satisfied. Highly recommended!

The autumn has been here for a long long time! Good food, quality ingredient. The place has a hippy feel. Friendly staff. Service can be slow sometimes. Typically the specials are the best.

My vegan husband and myself (a avid meat eater) both are well and easy! Excellent food!!!

We stopped in for a late Friday night dinner after a long drive. The empty tables weren’t cleaned but a table of our choice was cleared right away. American menu that is vegetarian and healthy friendly. Great beer selection including craft and seasonals. Be sure to check their specials board. Very reasonable prices. Tried the tempah, but we weren’t too crazy over it. The turkey sandwich was delish! I could tell that there were a bunch of local regulars, which is a good sign, and this helped make it a happy and friendly place with a casual and comfortably roomy environment! I will be back!

Stopped in for lunch while in Oneonta for work. If the waitstaff is the face of your restaurant then I was a bit disappointed. My waitress seemed very rushed and I didn’t even receive a «How are you?» Nevermind am expected smile.
Checked out the specials and soups of day and was excited for the black bean tomato and corn… Was then told the sign was wrong. so I switched to a spicy Mexican potato that was 1) not spicy and 2) not creamy enough to be called potato soooo. As a note 30 mins later the soup specials is still wrong.,
My salad was good but challenging as it was not tossed nor was my plate big enough to effectively mix. Tuna salad add was fantastic :)
Décor is very nice and the crowd seems both happy and chatty. So perhaps just an off day :)

Oneonta has become in a way a town of commercial contrasts. Back in the day when I first darkened its doorstep there wasn’t the strip over on the other side of the river, the cookie cutter had yet to deposit its flavorless vanilla wafer of big box retail on the Oneonta-​Davenport road.
Mind, I recognize the utility that WalmartDick’sBJsBurgerKingMcDonalds brings to areas, particularly those that feel the effects of Big Agriculture putting the press-​down on a once vibrant farm economy. Jobs ensue and everyday low prices abound and this is by no means a bad thing. This reality offsets the uninspiring aesthetic and the automobilecentric experience for me to degrees, while simultaneously having me want to get the hell away from it as quickly as I possibly can and head to Main Street.
Oneonta has a sweet little downtown full of buildings that have seen the history of its commerce and a different day. The offerings of Route 23 have sucked some of the life blood from what used to be the economy’s center, but a walk even on a chilly day proves that this town wears a garland of garlic and has a cross in its pocket, as the vampire isn’t having its way.
The Autumn Café is a perfect example. Set near the eastern end of Main Street the Autumn welcomes like a beacon and a pot-​belly stove. So cozy and inviting from the outside, so lovely and delicious and chill inside. Not hipster (hipster isn’t spoken in upstate NY, though if it were it certainly wouldn’t be turned away by Autumn), a little organic but not cloyingly so, local but not in a jukebox turns off when you walk in kind of way. The stamped metal ceiling reminds me of the Lower East Side.
The food is uniformly delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The dishes are made by kind people who care about what you eat. Unlike the big boxes and the eateries around them, Autumn feeds you as if they’d actually like you to live until you can visit again.
I had me a lamb burger with their housemade tahini sauce (make a lamb sound). Adam and my mom had fishcakes and let me have a bite and they were as delicious as the others who’ve written before me attest. Pops had a poached salmon salad and I wondered if he was going to lick the plate and he didn’t and while I would have understood I was at the same time kind of glad he let it be.
Sadly, my visits to town are only two or three times a year. If I lived closer I’d be here every day.
