History

Established in 1976.

Damascene Book Cellar was founded in 1976 as a competitor to the on-​campus book stores of both SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College. After operating for more than 30 years from Cherry St., Damascene bid for, and won, the contract for exclusive SUNY Oneonta on-​campus textbook selling rights. In the fall of 2010, Damascene Book Cellar moved to the lower level of Hunt College Union and has not looked back. Damascene has brought the innovation, flexibility, and determination that allowed it to survive off-​campus to its new on-​campus operations. In just the first two years as the exclusive, campus-​based bookseller for SUNY Oneonta, Damascene has upgraded its computer systems to position the store for success in an ever changing business, added a rental program to keep costs low for students, and worked diligently with students, faculty, staff, and other Oneonta Auxiliary Services to be a vital member of the SUNY Oneonta campus community.
