What the hell is a leather factory? They have leather stuff and tools to help you make stuff out of leather. At first this sounds like one of those things were you have to be a trained professional, like building a car, you can try to wing it I guess but here at Tandy, no degree is required.
A friend and I saw a tutorial to make leather belts online and decided to give it a shot. Checked out Tandy and this is the best place if you need any sort of leather working done. With all the cheap leather items in retail stores you kinda loose track of how much stuff is actually made out of leather and start to get the impression that leather doesn’t even exist anymore.
Here are some things that are easy to make from leather. Belts, bracelets, guitar straps, dog leashes, wallets, gun holsters.
This place has all the tools you need and tons of leather pieces. And the best part is the staff, super friendly and willing to give you a quick demonstration if you have questions. We were totally new to this and so we had a rough idea on what tools we would need. Jerry helped us pick out a few tools and didn’t try to up sell us on anything more expensive like some retail places do.
As you can expect most of the gentlemen working at Tandy are older and have been leather working for quite some time so they are more than capable on giving you the rundown of what to expect. The best part is they are so knowledgeable but aren’t going to talk your ear off about how long they’ve been skinning cows. Jerry was very helpful but at the same time straight to the point and didn’t slow down our shopping experience.
Overall we spent about 100 bucks between 2 people to make 2 really awesome belts out of real thick leather. I would say the initial cost of tools will bring the cost of your first 2 belts up to retail of a good leather belt. But after that you’re looking at about 20 bucks in materials to make future belts.
Ladies, tell your husbands to go here, this may be one of the cheapest hobbies I’ve found AND… AAANNDDDD it provides useful items to use in daily life (unlike NCAA brackets and golfclubs)
