Our homemade, authentic Czech and European dishes and deserts come straight from the Old World of Eastern Europe. Roast Duck, Roast Pork, Svickova, Czech Goulash, Jaeger Schnitzel, bread dumplings, liver dumpling soup and kolacky’s are just a few items off our menu.

History

Established in 1924.

The Bohemian Café has been serving Omaha’s Czechs and non-​Czechs since 1924. Louie Marcala was chef-​owner until 1947 when he sold it to Josef and Ann (Kapoun) Libor and stayed on as head chef. Our grandparents, Babi and Deda, operated the café at 1256 S 13th St until 1959 when they moved a half block south to our present location.

The site was a bank (Bohemian S & L) and a grocery store (Amen’s) so there were a lot of changes to be made to get it suitable for a restaurant.

Babi and Deda built their reputation through long, hard hours and genuine hospitality. They retired in 1966 and two more generations of the Kapoun family has been cooking, serving, cleaning and bussing to bring you Dumplings and Kraut today. With the 4th generation chipping in, we hope to be Omaha’s European Connection for years to come!

Visiting my home town and stopped in to a restaurant that has been a part of my life forever. We had the most adorable, efficient, and enthusiastic waiter I think I’ve had anywhere in the world (Rex, I think is his name). The food, as always was impeccable. Order anything on the menu and it’s going to be great — you can count on it.

Czech-​style restaurant on 13th street near Little Italy.
Pros: Good food. Great service. Never ran out of drink. Waitress explains all of the items on the menu. The dumplings look like big slices of bread. The cabbage is tasty. The meat is tender. All of these items are smothered in delicious gravies. The liver dumpling soup hit the spot.
Cons: Only wish there was a small side salad or some other greens not smothered in gravy. Was glad the waitress mentioned that the potatoes were instant. :’(
Neutral: Feasting/​polka music adds to the eastern Europe vibes.
Will eat here again.

It’s the best. Great service. Great food. Great price. You must know I’ve only been eating there for over 65 years. Just a wonderful place to be and absorb large quantities of sour kraut, dumplings, roast duck, dark beer, real polish sausage, liver dumpling soup, (I hate liver) but the soup is to die for. Just a place full of goodness and Excellent service. Great food

Absolutely love the jagerschnitzel and dumplings. Liver soup is excellent. Every time I go I always leave stuffed. Price is reasonable for the amount of food that you get. Definitely worth recommending!

What a unique little place in Omaha! It is truly a tradition, if you have been in Omaha and you have not tried it you must do so. The decoration is old and very European. The food is very authentic and the lady who served us was definitely part of the family that owns the restaurant. I had the Czech goulash and my boyfriend had the Svickova. Mine was meat in a rich tomato like sauce and his was a pot roast in a gravy that he loved, despite the fact that he does not like gravy. The liver dumpling soup, I would pass. The sauerkraut was really good too. Portions are large. Service was quick. They have a room in the back that can be used for events! Overall good adventure outing!

Visited Bohemian on a Sunday night with my mother and NaNa. We’d been one time before when we first moved to Nebraska but a lot of things have changed since.
They don’t serve «family style» like my NaNa remembers eating when she lived here and they no longer serve stuffed cabbage rolls.
Prices here are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. This visit I got the ¼ roast duck with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut and chicken noodle soup all for $ 14.25. The portions are huge, enough for you to eat and take some home for your lunch or dinner the next day.
A nice place to eat and experience a different culture here in Omaha.

I had boiled beef, which is on their special menu every day.
I choose dumplings and cabbage as my sides, and liver soup as my starter.
The soup was surprisingly good… It had a little liver meatball in it and was perfect in the slightly salty broth.
The boiled beef was tender and flavorful, but was covered in a VERY sweet dill gravy. It had vanilla notes to it as well and was quite off-​putting to me.
The dumplings were slices of huge flour dumplings. Very good, but that gravy was there!
The cabbage was sweet, too. But, I expected that… however, the gravy was on it as well!
Finally, I had two Czech pilsner beers. Urquell and Staropromen. Neither were my type of beer but the Staropromen was the best of the two.
Service was excellent.

I loved the history of this restaurant – waitresses in Czechoslovakian dresses, tole painted plates, steins, authentic food, etc. Our waitress was good. The food was not. I ordered a salad because it was the healthiest option. Chicken fried steak was okay. Corn was canned. Potatoes were instant. But the apple strudel was delicious – light pastry with perfect spices and fruit. Next time I will just order dessert.

I grew up eating here, my mom grew up eating here, and my grandparents ate here when the place first opened up sometime around the 60s or 70s. It’s the definition of delicious, heavy comfort food. Some people aren’t the «meat & potatoes» type, so if that’s not what you usually like to eat at restaurants, I wouldn’t suggest visiting. But if you love good soup, dumplings, gravy, baked & breaded meats, & mashed potatoes, you need to eat here. (And I don’t like sauer kraut but people I know who do like it say that they have the best.) My usual order is the breaded pork loin luncheon with egg drop soup, half dumpling, half mashed potatoes, and a Pepsi. (They randomly have the BEST fountain Pepsi.) The only time we go there is Saturday afternoon because they have the soups & lunch specials we like. We’ve never in my entire 21 years of eating here had to wait for a table. I’ll admit that I am biased, but it’s my favorite restaurant in Omaha. :)

I’ve been going here for my entire life and I’ve never been disappointed. I recommended you get the Dill Gravy on whatever dish you choose. They will bring out a little bowl of all their gravys for you to try if you haven’t before. I typically go during lunch because the prices and cheaper and the portions are a little more manageable.

Super good! Come hungry!!! I had the Jaeger Schnitzel ($ 18.95) and it was awesome. The Czech dumplings are super good and filling! The sweet and sour cabbage is to die for.
My wife had the veal cutlets and they were very good, but a tiny bit dry.
Great food, a bit pricey but not too bad. Good value for the amount of grub you get.

Amazing food, great atmosphere, and excellent staff! The meal started off with fresh rye bread and potato soup that were so flavorful and delicious that I could have ate my fill on those alone. Then came the main course of Svickova, sweet & saur cabbage, and dumplings smothered in gravy. I was in glutton heaven. I ate until I about burst at the seams and then ate some more. Such flavor! I love this place and will definitely come back the next time I’m in town.

My friend knew my love of German/​Czech food and told me we HAD to visit Bohemian Café so today was the day I chose for us to check it out.
First, I am SURE this is an iconic restaurant in town and there is no reason it shouldn’t be. The décor, the staff, the uniforms, the music — classic Eastern European appeal and charm.
As for the food — OH MY!!! I went with one of the daily specials (the Haenpheffer — or the braised rabbit with sauer cream gravy as we all know it). I decided to start with the liver soup and then chose dumplings and the sweet and sour cabbage on the side of the main dish. The meal starts with homemade rye bread that is AMAZING and so fresh! The soup was PERFECT with a liver meatball that was almost perfectly cooked (maybe a tad a soft in the middle but that would be too picky). The rabbit was cooked to perfection, the sauce was AMAZING, the cabbage was well balanced and the dumplings (almost looking the size of hash browns) were VERY tasty. My friend went the lunch portion of the sauerbraten and I can attest that it was prepared very nicely (not dry like many I had).
What a wonderful dining and cuisine experience and I can’t wait to get back!!!

Felt like I walked into my Grandma Onch’s house! Seriously, smelled looked and felt like my childhood and the food was absolutely scrumptious.
The dumplings were to die for and the breaded pork tenderloin was crispy and scrumptious. There really isn’t ever too much gravy on your plate and it all blends together so well on the palate.
Regretful that I didn’t get a poppyseed kolacky but I guess there’s always next time!
They even have Czech beers and the wait staff dress in character. The lunch portion which was only $ 8.99 was more than enough for us, we left happy as can be.
