Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge

Tourist spot! Sure, it’s got the kitsch factor. Fun to walk over. Nice sight. Unusual design. And a bit windy. Take a camera with you. Free parking on the Nebraska side right at the base. (Not sure on the Iowa side.)

Thank you to wonderful Omaha for this fabulous bridge! It was a thrill and an honor to ride across it. I met Bob Kerrey once, when I was dating a fellow Navy Seal friend of his and he seemed like a great, upright guy. I never thought that later on, he would become a noted Senator and have a pedestrian bridge named after him.
I do need to mention that it took some effort on my rented bike to try and find this bridge when I was riding from the Old Market area. I thought there would be some directional signs, so I just tried to spot the bridge and work my way towards it from the street. Eventually I got close enough that I figured out where the entrance to it was on the Omaha side.
Head’s up to new parents. Taking your baby for a stroll along here is a way to get some good fresh air and that will usually always mean a GOOD LONG NAP later on. I always would walk my kids on the Pier here in San Diego and loved how tired all that air blowing around make them. I did see a man teaching his son how to ride a bike along the way, which is a nice family thing to do, but it did not seem the safest locale for that, what with all the people going by – both on foot, bicycle or roller blades. I tried to tell them I was coming up behind them but I think they only spoke Spanish.
Otherwise, this is a fine place to enjoy, especially on a nice weather kind of day. When I went over last week, it was blustery and very windy. This was particularly so right in the middle of the bridge. I loved looking over the railings at the mighty Missouri River flowing by. I was in heaven listening to the robins singing along the river’s edge and searching for worms in the ground as we do not have these birds out in California.
I cannot say enough enough good things about this fabulous bridge that allows people on foot or wheel to traverse across to Council Bluffs, Iowa and experience the ability to have one foot in the Cornhusker State and the other in neighboring Iowa. 5 Unilocal STARS!

Is there a lot to say when it comes to a bridge? Does it do its job? In this case yes, it will successfully transport you across the Missouri River to either Nebraska or Iowa. Now that is exciting! In all seriousness though, the Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge is pretty cool. Visually its pretty cool, both during the day and when lit up at night. It also does tie the Omaha Riverfront area to the still developing Iowa Riverfront area, which will continue to help expand both areas. It also really cements the Riverfront area in Omaha, and brings people to the area. Overall it’s a cool place to check out downtown, and is tied to various trails if you are cycling, jogging, waking the dogs, or just looking for a place to take a stroll.

Ok. It is a bridge. Named after Sen. Bob Kerrey. It connects Iowa and Nebraska. The first ever foot bridge built just for this purpose. It is the 2^nd longest serpentine bridge (at its construction) and is a great way yo avoid walking on the freeway.
Initially our bridge to nowhere, but there is a great deal of improvements to urge us into the Iowa side. As is, it is best for bipedal photographers to get a great view of our skyline.
At a mere ~3k feet it isn’t going to burn off that meal, but it is worth the walk. Cyclist friendly. photo op in the middle.
I just wish that the city would calm down on the timing of the color canging lights for a slow aperature photo

This is a must stop place for any Omaha tourists. It’s a quick little jaunt (maybe .5 mile) of a bridge that allows you to walk over the river from Nebraska to Iowa. About halfway over the bridge they have the line marker showing where you cross over both states, so that’s a perfect touristy photo-​op!

The water feature isn’t as nice as it probably could have been but it was sufficient.
They needed to have placed more shade… trees or whatever. The sun just beats down on you… below the bridge.
The bridge itself is nice… cute how they have the line for Nebraska/​Iowa.

Eh… I feel myself turning green just thinking about it.
I don’t drive and let me tell you, walking here is a pain in the butt. Maybe I just don’t know the super secret shortcut? If you drove, this wouldn’t be an issue.
I also think it’s really scary. I am a person prone to motion/​sea sickness and and this thing covers all the bases very well. Maybe I was just there on a windy day, but oh man walking across this thing made me want to throw up in between two states. I couldn’t force myself to walk the whole thing and my husband said I looked paler than usual. (plus I was shaking like a pathetic person)
It’s something I suggest everyone check out at least once and it’s really beautiful when lit up. They also have concerts around the bridge in the summer time, but yeah. I’ll stay on the solid land thanks!

Perfect for anyone hoping to be in two places at the same time. Parking is easy on the Nebraska end. There’s a ton of free spots. You can rent bikes to ride across the bridge or take a quick walk.
The bridge itself is pretty shakey. I wasn’t expecting it to move around so much so that was a surprise! The line marking Nebraska and Iowa is a little closer to the Iowa end but the bridge is short enough that it’s not a hard walk at all.

I was in Omaha for a few days and thought I would check out the bridge. It’s not super exciting, but interesting to check out. It crosses the state line into Iowa, so it’s fun to have one foot in each state. You tell people you were in two states at the same time.

If you are visiting omaha for any reason. I would highly recommend stopping at Bob Kerrey Pedestrain Bridge. The bridge has great views and you can knock of two different states in about 30 minutes walk.

bob kerrey pedestrian bridge is the second best thing to being able to be at 4 states at once. you get to be at two states at once!
whether you are visiting nebraska or iowa it’s kinda neat to be able to come to this bridge to just be at two places at once. it’s a nice walk with a nice relaxing view as well. on the bridge you’ll be able to see the missouri river. there’s a lot of people walking, running, or biking around the area. i would highly recommend coming here if you are nearby the area.

Now I’ve walked (or scooter-​ed) from one state to another.
A group of us were visiting a friend who moved from MN to NE and she took us there to check it out. I was on knee scooter, so I didn’t technically walk the bridge, but I scooted across. It was a little bit of workout going up the slight inclines on one leg and 2 wheels. Anyhoo…
It was fun, it was a good outdoor activity and it’s a little more than a mile from one side to the other back. Now, the bridge doesn’t actually take you anywhere, although we looked once we got across and couldn’t really find anything to do on the Iowa side except look at some people doing a mud runner type race and some actual neighborhood streets.
Not much parking on the NE side, just a small lot with a few spaces, but we made it work. I don’t remember seeing any restrooms or places to get some water so, bring your own and pee before you head over. I learned a little about the bridge, Bob Kerrey and Nebraska that afternoon. We will probably head back on our next trip into town. I am planning to be fully functional next time.

My favorite way to get to know any new place is on foot, and doing so is *much* better when there are non-​motorized trails, parks, natural features and such to explore. The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge encompasses all of these, plus a state border crossing, and it’s free!
There isn’t much in the way of commercial businesses on either side of the bridge– the bridge itself and the wide concrete path that vaults the mighty MIssouri River on its back, are the main attraction here. Well, that and the relative peace that can be found in the park land on either side of the river in the midst of this busy Midwestern city.
Great views all around make this bridge an excellent place to walk, jog, or bicycle between Nebraska and Iowa for fitness or for fun :-)

Sometimes I can be a sucker for tourist landmarks and I suppose this is one of those places! I had some time to kill so why not check this off my list while I’m in Omaha?! It was a clear but cold (low 30s) in mid-​December and I was ambitious to cross the entire bridge. However, the wind got the best of me, literally, so I only made it to where I can be in 2 states at once, which is about the middle of the bridge.
There are bikes for rent at the entrance of the bridge so you can breeze through faster or around town. My understanding is that these bikes have kiosks throughout and you can drop off or pick up at any location.
When I come visit again, I’ll come back during the day time so I can get a better view. At night time, I saw a lovely night skyline of downtown Omaha.

So I was randomly looking through reviews and didn’t realize the bridge was reviewable! Anyways, I hate to give it only three stars, and maybe to out of towners it’s cool, but I really think it’s worthless as an Omahaan.
Yeah it’s cool looking, it’s lit up at night, you have great views of downtown Omaha, and you can bike across it. Easy access to downtown and the Century Link Center… But that’s it. The cost of the bridge was ridiculous and totally not worth having just so you can look at downtown from it.
The riverfront is horribly unaccessible and out of the way from downtown and the Old Market. There’s no major streets that lead you to it because there’s nothing here. There’s the firefighters memorial, and a park. Yes, the park is great and it looks pretty but there’s no shops, no restaurants, two super luxury apartment buildings, and absolutely nothing on the CB side. Walking across the bridge is literally pointless. Our riverfront is terrible compared to most cities and that’s why the one restaurant I won’t name always does terrible and can’t stay in business.
There’s a giant vending machine at the start and there’s already been two shootings here. Until Omaha can do something with the riverfront, this was a huge waste of money.

If you were a teen in the late 90s/​early 2000’s like me and saw the movie «A walk to remember» featuring (swoon) shane west, or you have read the book by Nicholas Sparks, you know one of the sweet things the male protagonist does to complete his girlfriend’s bucket list is to find a way for her to be in «two places at once». If you too want to embark on this romantic ride, The pedestrain bridge has the Iowa/​Nebraska State line drawn so you can do just that!
All jokes aside, this massive construction started when I was in undergrad and finished right before I graduated. I enjoyed using it as a morning place for runs, bike rides, and evening saunters. The jumping fountains are great for kids to play in, and you can rent the citi bikes here to ride around and go to the old market. Currently I use it as a bike and running path to the iowa trails on the other side. Very enjoyable.

A great place to get an overlook of the city of Omaha. It’s kind of neat too as you can feel the bridge vibrate/​move if its windy outside, which I think is cool.
My brother-​in-​law, sister, and wife and I felt like a nice walk on Saturday evening, right at dusk. There were a lot of people on the bridge. there were some fast-​peddling bicyclists, and a security golf cart but it wasn’t too packed.
It’s a great overlook of the city for out-​of-​towners.

Kidding aside, the pedestrian bridge is great addition. Nice splash area at the NE entrance and bridge is very pretty, especially at night when the lights are on. Nice romantic, relaxing walk. As soon as IA puts something more on their side… 5 STARS!

So… what’s so great about a bridge anyway? Well I would say go stand on that mother, and as you’re standing there imagine what would be like if it weren’t there at all. First of all you be in the water swimming for your life. Second you get to imagine how the bridge actually fits in with the environment. Does it look good there? Is it necessary?
The answer to both of those questions with this bridge is yes. The bridge is very beautiful, all gray and flowing gracefully around one of its towers, and then another, forming a soft ess shape. It’s needed because there’s really no other pedestrian or bicycle crossing of the Missouri River built into the other bridges. So I make it a point to come here and run across it when I’m in town. As an added bonus, you can do this little half mile run or walk, and tell all of your friends that you ran or walked in two States!
