Shear Madness

I had always heard great things about Sheer Madness from friends who had taken their kids here but after taking my son here for his first haircut… we left kind of disappointed.
We walked into the salon and were not greeted very friendly or much at all in fact. I don’t know if it had to do with us not having an appointment or what but I had to kind of laugh some things off to break the tension/​silence between me and the two ladies who were standing at the front.
Also, I was kind of disappointed that this place doesn’t do something special for children’s first haircut/​lock of hair. I had to ask them to save the hair for his baby book.
Luckily the woman cutting my son’s hair was nice. Otherwise this review would be rated at a 1 star.
We went here for the experience of getting my son’s first haircut and unfortunately, we didn’t get that.

Only one star because it’s the rule. First, our son likes haircuts and he cried when she started with the clippers. I told her to change blades and she laughed. Then she proceeded to scissor cut my sons hair without looking at it. There is a divot in the middle of his bangs, it’s not blended at all, and completely uneven. I will have to get this fixed next week at a real barber. This place is a joke.

They did great for my sons first haircut. 4 stars Because there was only 1 stylist on a Saturday so there was a wait. She did great when we got to go. We were walk-​ins so it was fine to wait a while

I honestly love taking my son here. He hot his first haircut here and we’ve gone ever since. Usually Miss Kris cuts his hair and she does a fabulous job. I always look around and the kids always seem to be having such a good time.
I highly recommend if you have a kid and want them to have a positive experience getting thier hair cut.

One visit here with our one year old boy for his first haircut. There aren’t a whole lot of options available around town where professional stylists will cut kids’ hair unless they are relatively still. Scheduling was a breeze and it is a pretty convenient location near I-​35 and 119^th St. in Olathe.
It’s an interesting set up inside the store. There is nowhere to sit and wait for your appointment. Chairs and magazines are replaced by walls of toys. Shear Madness knows their market here. We only waited about 5 minutes to be seated in the actual salon, our choice of multiple kid-​friendly booster chairs.
We opted for the «first haircut» package. 29 bucks nets you before and after pictures, a page for a scrapbook (if you’re into that kind of thing) and a little baggie with a lock of hair. Regular haircuts are about 15 bucks, pretty reasonable for dealing with kids starting at age one. We were only in the chair for about 10 minutes — the fastest 30 bucks any stylist could make, I imagine. It comes, however, with the challenge of keeping the little ones occupied, safe, and cry-​free. Our stylist was swift and deft with the clippers and scissors and polished up our little guy’s shaggy mane in no time. She definitely was focused on him, not us. I had to remind myself that we were there for him, not my wife and me.
We’ll give SM another shot down the road. There were a few little things that could be improved for the future. Random guy (I’m guessing another stylist’s significant other) hanging out in the salon on his phone and watching basketball. Not much of a cleanup after the cut — our little man was scratching all the way home to the bath. Overall a calming experience for two otherwise nervous parents.

Took 11 month old for his first haircut, no smiles, no talking to my son, no ease in to what was going to happen. Basically had my son in a headlock and went at it with the trimmer! Horrible service, butchered cut! How can you work with kids at a KIDS salon and be so impersonal and cold!?! Don’t act put out… maybe liking kids should be a prerequisite… no??? Will never go back! I also never write reviews but this was such a bad experience, it needed to be noted. Should have checked here first or their Facebook page reviews. This is also making me give a star and I think it should be zero stars!

I took both of my children to this place since it was similar to one back home in Grand Rapids, MI. Boy should we have done our homework. Now I don’t usually ask for much when it comes to a haircut experience, unless its with regards to my children. First of all, the people there are not outgoing or friendly (sans one of them). The one and only reason my children «enjoyed» their visit was because Disney Junior was on. The staff was simply rude and/​or didn’t care to hold a conversation with either we the parents or our children. Let me put it like this: Have you ever felt that you are paying or services but the workers feel like your doing them an inconvenience by having them actually do their job… it was like that. Additionally, I asked for a trim for my youngest and the «stylist» (that’s pretty gracious) took 3 whole inches off my my 1 ½ year old. And anyone with a child under 2 knows that’s a lot! Also she said she was finished and the haircut was obviously uneven. I mean I can’t hang a picture straight to save my life but I could see that cut looked terrible. My wife had to point it out and it was a huge bother to fix the mistake. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars is because the hair stylist that cut my eldest’s hair was nice to her and she did a good job as far as the haircut. Though, even she didn’t really impress because as soon as the cut was done, she was gone. I expect those who work with children in any capacity to be caring and conversational, but this place might as well be a dungeon. We’ll never go back there again!

15 minute wait after I scheduled an appointment wouldn’t have been much of a problem if they wouldn’t have allowed a walk-​in to go ahead of us.
This will be our last visit here as we drive nearly 20 minutes only because they have neat chairs. We will stay local for half the price. The second star was because Precious, the hair stylist, was friendly.

My wife started taking our son here a few years ago when they were in Overland Park. This location is perfect for us and we have a stylist that works well with our son. Without getting into details our son can be a challenge and he typically does very well here. For him speed of service is important and that is what he gets. A great cut fast.
Children seem to like that this is a salon for them. Of course there are all kinds of toys and trinkets that kids like and want mom or dad to buy. It is worth it because it keeps them occupied as they have to wait for their turn on occasion.
The hair cutting area (I’m a guy what else do you call it) is set up with kid seats meaning smaller or peddle cars as seats. Great idea!
