History

Established in 2014.

Tom Sellen was a professional journalist for 18 years, writing for publications like Dow Jones Newswires, The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and various other publications and websites. With Pixel & Pen, Tom set out to use his photographic skills as well as his well-​honed writing to start a business focused more on creativity to produce brilliant photography for families, weddings, fashion models and businesses. Tom also loves to create gorgeous landscape and artistic pieces that anyone would be proud to display in their home or office.

I have always been fascinated with the ability of a great picture to tell a story, to reveal ourselves in the eye of the photographer.

Photography grabbed me when I was about 14 years old growing up in central Iowa. A friend encouraged me and on occasion would let me use his Nikon and Hasselblad cameras. I went home and converted a closet into a working darkroom and I have never looked back.

My journalism career took off in 1993, writing for a financial-​agricultural news service called Futures World News. Through the years I wrote news for Dow Jones Newswires, The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and various financial and agricultural websites. I remained a journalist for 18 years.

I then began Pixel & Pen Photography located in my home in Olathe, Kansas, serving the entire Kansas City metro area. Whether you need senior portraits, photos of your wedding day, a professional headshot or simply to capture family memories, give me a call or shoot me an email.
