The Zoo Amphitheatre for more than 75 years has been a mecca for musicians and music lovers alike. More than 1 million fans, lawn chairs and blankets in hand, have snuggled into the green hillside venue carved out of ancient red sandstone. Some of the greatest names in the world of music — from Marvin Gaye to Willie Nelson, Chicago to ZZ Top — have graced the stage amid the towering blackjack oak trees.
History
Established in 1936.
The Zoo Amphitheater was built during the Depression by the civilian conservation corps. The opening act for the venue was «The Circus of 21 Death-Defying Acts,» as the Amphitheater’s history relates. Use of the structure came and went over the decades, but in recent years the Zoo Amphitheater has developed into a popular events location-in fact, it was voted the #1 concert venue by readers of «The Oklahoman» newspaper.
Musical acts ranging from Judas Priest to Willie Nelson have performed at the Oklahoma Zoo Amphitheater in the past.
