Rissho Kosei Kai Dharma Center

I really can’t add much to Huntur’s excellent review. I have recently started attending some of the Dharma Center functions again now that I’m not traveling all the time. The people there are very friendly, and no, you don’t have to shave your head and wear bedsheets. If you’ve ever had an interest in learning more about Buddhism, there are beginner’s classes every Wednesday at 7:00. Their website also has their weekly schedule and new people are welcome at any time.

Rissho Kosei Kai is a sect of Buddhism which focuses on teachings from the Lotus Sutra which is considered the highest teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha. They also focus on the essential Buddhist teachings of the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path and the Three Seals of the Law.
They consider themselves as Buddhism for today. You won’t find any saffron robes or monastic style settings here. Just everyday people from all walks of life who follow the teachings of the Dharma.
The have an open door policy so anyone who is interested in learning more about Buddhism is welcome to come in. It’s a very warm and casual atmosphere and they provide classes for learning the basics. Kind of like Buddhism 101. The teachers are wonderful and they provide a great sense of community. Services are on Sunday which consist of the service, meditation and Hoza, which focuses on a teaching and how it applies in our lives. Members share with one another about experiences and how the teachings of Buddha relate to us or confound us and helping one another reach a deeper consciousness.
RKK is highly involved in interfaith relations and peace projects throughout the world.
If you are curious about Buddhism or are on the path already and have no sangha, this is a perfect place to begin without worry of a monastery type feel that can seem very foreign.
