I work locally and have tried this place for lunch several times and wasn’t particularly impressed by the food, price, or service, but I figured I’d give they’d needed a couple months to work out the kinks in their business, and there’s only so much variety within walking distance of work. I called in an order for a seaweed salad and avocado roll and was told it’d be ready 20 minutes, which is already kind of lengthy, but I gave them half an hour judging from past experience. I walked into a completely empty restaurant, when I called out and the owner emerges from the back and proceeds to ring me up while the chef scrambles to throw together my order. I asked him why my food wasn’t ready and said they both were on lunch and forgot my order. Wouldn’t have bothered me that much if this sort of thing hadn’t happened several times before. Seems like they really just don’t care. I don’t think I’ll be giving them another shot. For what it’s worth I’d stick with Umi Japanese café down the street.

Came down to Oceanside for our 2 year anniversary. My wife and I both enjoy sushi so you can imagine our excitement when we see the Grand Opening 50% off sign in the window. There was no one in there, which should have set off a red flag but we figured… its 2:00pm. Everyone’s probably had lunch already… We ordered Gyoza appetizer which came promptly and was a pretty good value. They were crisp and flavorful. It was all good until the sushi came out. We ordered a spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, and Alaskan roll. Everything smelled super fishy and stale. The sushi rice was dry. The spicy tuna was old and dry as well. Service wasn’t too bad since we were the only people in the restaurant, but there were points in time that the server would sit down at the counter, eat food, and watch the tv! I mean sure it’s chill and there isn’t a lot to do, but shouldn’t there be some degree of professionalism? All in all, wouldn’t come back and don’t recommend that anyone else goes.

I feel awful for writing a bad review but I had the Tonkotsu Ramen with chicken and almost threw up an hour later. Let’s just say I had tummy issues and had to find the nearest bathroom. The California roll I shared with my boyfriend was really good though. I am not a picky eater and my stomach does not get easily upset so I am 100% sure it was the soup. I will not be returning.

After I submitted my initial review, I received a nasty message from someone who claims to be the owner of this restaurant full of personal attack and aggression. I have already blocked and reported this person to Unilocal. I think Unilocal is a platform that allows Unilocalers to be 100% honest and to express their views freely based on their experience. All I wrote in my review was exactly what we encountered, nothing more, nothing less. Others might have a great time there and embrace this place, great, good for you, but not in my case. I am done with this place and don’t want to waste anymore time associates with it. If I got a nasty message because I wrote a low-rated review, imagine if you complain the food on-site…

I don’t know they just changed owner or what?! The food we ordered does not even look similar to the ones in the pictures. The worst sushi place I ever been to… Fish is not fresh at all, has some kind of «dead» fish taste. Even fast food tastes better this. Very disappointing!

Not very impressed. Decided to try because it’s new and the reviews didn’t seem half bad. Did not have an awful experience by any means just a weird one. Our waitress took our order and rolled our sushi? Being skeptical about new places I always try very basic things first. Salmon avo and California roll… Just, not good. My friend did get a poke bowl that she said was not half bad and my udon was decently tasty. The waitress didn’t even ask about our rolls barely being touched so that was a little strange too, but then again we didn’t say anything either. So, just see for yourself I guess!

The three stars are for trying. They are new. Understood. We came in for lunch and the place was empty. The hours online said they were open, but when we walked in a nice man came out of the back looking stunned and I said«can we have lunch?» He said, after a stunned pause, «yes». There was nobody in the place but us, yet he asked«how many?» And seemed to be scrambling for us to sit. He was super sweet and as attentive as possible at first. When I looked around and realized that this was not a Japanese place I changed my expectation a bit. Yes, they serve Japanese food, but it isn’t what I’m used to from a quality perspective. They brought out some cucumbers with spicy salt and some plain for the kids on the house. That was sweet. My boys ate the spicy salt cucumbers, my daughter ate plain. I looked over the menu and decided to stick with lunch dishes. Our jalapeño hamachi was good. But sadly, that’s where it stopped. The rice was not top quality. Our food came out in odd order, but we are accustomed to this — when it’s ready — it comes. But I know the rice is already made and so is the(plain) miso soup(they add the accompanying tofu and sea veg later) — so why did it take over 30 minutes for us to get my daughter’s plain soup and bowl of rice? I asked for it twice besides my initial order. When I ordered hand rolls the sweet guy asked me if I meant to order hand roll or cut roll. I assured him, hand roll. My hand rolls were not tight. The salmon skin was cut too tick for hand rolls, the other rolls were over-stuffed and they ripped before they got to me. I love nori so I ate them but was disappointed with the rice, some taste overpowered the balance. The California rolls on my child’s sushi lunch were decent — but I’m not a huge fan — he couldn’t eat them at all, but did eat his 5 pc sushi — albeit fish first then rice. My oldest ordered the salmon teriyaki and it was swimming in teriyaki sauce. There was a ton of rice. The gyoza was not great. Maybe the oil it was deep fried in? The salad was okay. My kids are learning with their chopstick skill and the teriyaki salmon proved a little difficult. Attaining a fork was only slightly cumbersome as I had to ask 3 times.(Most places in Tokyo will give western kids forks and spoons without question and promptly) My husband got the Saturday bento. He said it was okay. That typically means — meh. He doesn’t like to complain. He will rave about something when it is good. About ¾ through our meal another server showed up and she came by our table constantly asking if we wanted anything else — annoyingly so. It was like she was trying to get rid of us. We were the only people there the entire time. The fish quality seemed okay, but the rice needs a little work. We may give them another chance.

I came here for a work function as we all wanted to try out a new Sushi spot. During lunch it was just us girls so it was like having the place to ourselves. The owners are really nice and were tentative to our ordering needs. They made the soup fresh and brought out the dishes in a timely manner. The prices are awesome! 50% of Classic Rolls and I didn’t see any other roll more then 13. The second time I visited this spot during dinner. There were people seated all around and only one waitress. We received our food super late and having a one year old with me her patience was running thin too. We ordered two soups two rolls and a Hello Kitty meal. We got the rolls first, next the soup, lastly the Hello Kitty meal. I prefer my child to start eating before us as we were near the end of our meal before hers came out. We boxed it up after a few bites. Would I come here again, yes! Me and my co workers agreed some rolls were a hit and miss just lacking some flavor compared to other places but overall freshness was at a 100% and the owner and his wife too! I am hoping with more time in this place will improve with the time. Dessert you have to try the Fried Eggroll Cheesecake! Other items I have tried: *Osaka Roll *Shrimp Killer Roll *Bacon Lover Roll *TJ Roll *Cherry Blossom Roll *Monkey Balls *Snow Balls *Shoyo Ramen

I saw the reviews and found out it was listed as HOT and NEW, so I had to come check it out. Its located right next door to a Phở restaurant and off of Mission Ave. Parking can be difficult because of the one way narrow street, so be prepared to park in other off streets. When you walk in, you are immediately greeted by high ceilings and plenty of bar seating. The walls dont have any pictures or art, which would be nice to fill in the ambience of the room, otherwise it feels a bit empty. The staff that works here are great! I got to talk it up with the cook who is a very down to earth individual and you can tell that this is a family operated business, which I truly respect. I ordered one roll off their long list of classic rolls(50% off any) and one roll off their signature list. I had to order a hot sake and large beer which is $ 7. I dont like how the sake size is small for the large beer, its just not enough… I only got 3.5 shots out of it and so much beer left. As for the sushi quality, it is very tasty!!! The presentation is by far as great as it tastes. Honestly, if your not trying to get robbed of your money and you want the quality and presentation, this is the place to be at! I love Miso Harney, but I think their gonna have a run for their money once more people start hearing what all the hype is about here! ;) The only thing this place needs, is more art to fill the empty walls to give this place some character. Other than that, I highly recommend you come check this place out! You can bet that I will be a returning customer!

Amazing! The best sushi I have had… Every dish was so delicious. Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of the first one, but I will definitely get it again. I really like the cherry one too. The last one was good, though I am not a big fan of jalapeños. Prices were quite reasonable and dishes were large. Good quality ingredients(tender fish), nice ambiance inside, and very friendly staff.

The food here was really decent. All flavorful and fresh with fair prices. The service was interesting. At the time we went the host was also our waitress, barista, and chef. It’s hard to top sushi being so close to the coast, but the food was really good! I would go back if downtown and hungry.

Sushi here was great and very reasonably priced. We had the classic tempura shrimp roll, salmon nigiri, the classic Osaka roll, and the signature seared salmon roll. Delicious! The service was a little slow, but they got a handle on things by the end. Would definitely come back again!

Made my second trip to Sumo Hut today and it was equally amazing as it was the first time around! I’ve had the pleasure of trying the San Diegan, Bacon Lover, Caterpillar, Jungle Jungle, Scorpion, and the 101. All have been very tasty with my favorite being the Bacon Lover. If you have friends that don’t like to eat fish they’ll love it. Tammy is awesome and she really cares about her guests! The restaurant is very open and airy. The menu has a large variation of rolls from your usual staples to some I’ve never heard of with ingredients I wouldn’t have seen at other places. It’s different and I personally love it. Can’t wait for my next visit!

If you are in Oceanside, you have to try this place! My girlfriend and I went for dinner a day after their grand opening. We were instantly greeted by Tammy who sat us down and helped us order. We tried a variety of rolls. We had avocado rolls, vegetables rolls, a Spicy Tuna roll, Alaska roll, and the Spider roll. Everything was fantastically prepared and presented. It was some of the best sushi I have ever had, and I haven’t even fully delved into the menu! The service here is unbeatable. Everyone is so welcoming. Like another review said, they make you feel like a guest, not a customer. They really go out of their way to make your experience enjoyable. Every time we have visited since(I’ll keep that number to myself — the sushi is THAT good) we are happily greeted by name and given exceptional service. Oceanside, you’ve got yourself a keeper. This place is going to thrive!

AMAZING! I will admit I have been breathlessly waiting for this place to open. As soon as it did and I had a day free, I dragged a friend over and we tried it out. All of my expectations were exceeded. The staff was super nice, especially Tammy. She made her special«Tammy Sauce» out of jalapenos, japanese chili peppers, sriracha, cilantro and the House Special Sauce”. We loved it at a 2 but it goes up to a 10. I highly recommend it. She also cut us an orange into the shape of a Panda. So Cute. But I am getting ahead of myself. The nice waitress brought us complimentary edamame and our drinks. Then the fun really began! I ordered a spicy tuna handroll, an eel handroll and a Spider roll. Fairly standard — I was playing it safe. Excellent presentation and flavor. My companion was the adventurous one. He ordered the San Diegan — a tempura shrimp roll topped with seared tuna, imitation crab, caramelized onions, spicy mayo and eel sauce. A culinary delight. He did order a Catepillar roll. But the presentation was unique — there were little eyes making it one of the most adorable things I’ve ever devoured. And last but not least — the Bacon Lover Roll — yes, you read that right. Katsu chicken, imitation crab, avocado roll topped with bacon, cilantro, masago, spicy mayo and eel sauce. I’ve never even heard of this anywhere else. It was a Singular Epicurian Adventure of Wonder. Mm mm good. Good for the more carniverous diner. Tammy created all the unique recipes. She was sweet and warm. We hugged goodbye. I love this place. I know that they’ve just opened and Panda oranges and free edamame might not last, but it’s lovely now.

This place is great! Best sushi in the area. The staff is extremely nice and accommodating. My boyfriend and I have gluten and dairy allergies and it can be very hard to find good restaurants to eat at. The staff took the time to help us order and modify rolls to suit our needs. They were very knowledgable. Nothing is worse than trying to order at a restaurant and having the server not know if a certain menu item contains something that could make you very sick.(Since they are so new, they don’t have gluten free soy sauce yet but they were very reassuring that they would soon have it) The sushi itself was delicious! Other restaurants in the area tend to skimp on rice. Not here! The rolls are filled generously with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Presentation is just gorgeous. The Spider Roll was phenomenal! Try it! The food, service, and prices were so great that we came back two days later with family to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday. They took such good care of us and made his birthday a really special one. Give this place a shot. You won’t be disappointed!
