Asylum Surf Shop

When I bought my son a custom board that had not been plugged, a friend told us to try Asylum Surf Shop for help. We called ahead and spoke with Rhodel, who was happy to lend a hand. He not only did an excellent job plugging the board, but also helped us find a pair of booties to give my son’s fins a better fit and sent us home with fresh wax. Cool place and really great experience with Rhodel. We’ll definitely be back!

So, here is the thing. I have a sneaker and watch fetish. These guys are the best I’m in my late 40’s and the staff treats my like friends and these kids are less than half my age. worked in retail for over 27 years and would kill to have that staff. Quality:) Rocking my new kicks today:)

Great locall business right down to the T! Bought a pair of sandals specially designed for walking down the beach, and have had them for over 4 years now and still kicking! Friendly customer service, and very reasonable prices!

Local surf shop = the best and only shop!
Prices are just as good if not, the best youll ever find. They do package deals when you purchase a board and such so you save a little.
They have a wide selection for you to choose from and they only carry the best. Id be sure to come check this place out if you ever need anything.

What a great place… searched all over town last Fall for the right size Custom X body board for a birthday gift for my middle school son, this is the ONLY place with a huge selection. The staff was so helpful and awesome to him, found the perfect board and accessories. He now competes on the school team and when we needed some help and instruction we called Asylum and got hooked up for an awesome beach session with one of their own surf team riders. They have everything you need, great location too… the perfect So Cal shop for everyone, visitors or locals. check it out!

Awesome people. We’re friendly from the beginning with great service and AWESOME prices on surfboard rentals. We were in and out and the sales clerk was very helpful in helping us to find the right board! Great place!

I am leaving my original review up because I think the issue should be made clear and it’s something, from a customer’s point of view, that can be paid attention to and avoided.
But let me say this: there is something to be said about customer service. I mentioned that «the customer is king», and while the expression still exists and I believe it’s more true in the US than in many other countries, it’s not always handled that way.
Just days after my initial experience I received a phone call from the owner of Asylum Surf who apologized personally and we had a good talk about what happened and he corrected the situation.
What should I say? THAT is customer service.
So there goes my drastic change in stars, because other than my experience, the store is great, the rental equipment is very good/​in good condition and the selection of clothes and other items was also satisfactory.
I would go there again, and if you’re renting equipment: Just make sure you check what time the store closes yourself :)

While Asylum seems like a great store with knowledgeable staff (as far as the equipment goes), be aware of their rental tactics.
Great rental gear, helpful staff (when they don’t seem uninterested/​stoned), good prices on rental gear.
However, when I rented some gear on a Saturday to be returned on Sunday, I asked what time I had to return it by. I was told «6pm».
Then I asked «do you close at 6pm or do I get charged for another day after 6pm? What happens if I show up at 6:10pm by accident?»
The answer was: «No, we close at 7pm but if we told people to be back at 7 they’d all be too late, so we tell people to be back at 6pm. 6:10 is no big deal.»
So I was satisfied and ensured the employee that I’d try my best to be back by 6.
The next day I was at the store at 6:05pm only to find that the store clerk forgot to tell me that Sunday is the only day they don’t close at 7, but instead at 6. ALL of the employees were still there, but they wouldn’t accept my gear back. I was greeted with «You’re too late dude».
When someone returned the gear for me the next day (as I had to leave town) they explained the situation and the answer given was «bummer».
— I realize we’re in a surf town, but please hire teenagers that can at least treat their customers with respect and are not stoned.
— I complained about being told the wrong store hours and was told that the clerk who told me that «knows what he’s talking about» — I guess THAT makes it all right, no? It’s quite apparent to me that he didn’t know what he was talking about.
Generally I would give Asylum a much higher rating, but please people, the customer is king. Get your act together.

the ppl who work there know there stuff, are real cool, and the prices are competitive! plus after you buy that new board, or pair of trunks, it is just steps from the beach, haha, so you can go break em in as soon as you get em. no hassle, fair prices, new and used boards… they arent gonna BS you into buying stuff you dont want, just the stuff that meets you skill lvl and you budget. They have a skate shop right across the street and it has the same exact vibe, just as rad…

This sister shop to ASYLUM SKATE accross the street is run by guys who are life-​long boarders, with vast experience in surfing of all sytles including bodyboarding, skim boards whatever your pleausure. They stock a nice range of quality gear and threads– AND they understand customer service, support and thrill seekers! They hooked me up wtih a really nice Pro body board & rip cord, that fits my style, my destinations, my tall physical size and ability that will last me at least another decade. They have some inexpensive boards and gear as well but u will find no Costco seconds here bro! Really sweet selection of sun reflective board bags!
Hit them up, they are a real surf shop! Support SURFRIDER Foundation! and keep our beaches clean and accessible! ASYLUM IS A+!
