We are currently Delaware’s only 100% dedicated gluten free restaurant. We serve a full lunch menu as well as baked goods, desserts, smoothies, coffee and espresso drinks, even gluten free beer, wine, and hard cider!

History

Established in 2012.

Gluten Free Chef Cathy Berzins has been on a gluten free diet for over ten years, owing to a diagnosis of celiac disease. She opened the Birch Tree Café in 2012 with her family.

Cathy Berzins opened the Birch Tree Café in May of 2012. Owing to her diagnosis of Celiac disease, Cathy has been following a gluten free diet for over ten years. Her primary passion is to help others learn how to sustain a gluten free diet for a happier and healthier life.

It was such a great visit. Cathy was out of fresh bread but I bought a frozen loaf, it as so delicious. And GLUTEN FREE! The café is so cute and attached to a nice store. Cathy is super friendly and leads with love. I’ll definitely be back!

Good, homemade, gluten-​free food, but prices are VERY high. I stopped in to get bread for my girlfriend, who has celiacs, only to discover that a HALF-​loaf of gf bread is $ 7…which makes it $ 14 for a loaf… A LOAF OF BREAD!
I know ingredients for gf foods are not cheap, but I can’t afford and won’t buy a $ 14 loaf of bread, no matter how good it tastes. You can make a product, but if you have to charge a ridiculous amount to make a profit, than it may be time to reconsider.
The owner was extremely nice… very friendly. Atmosphere of the place was quaint. If it wasn’t for such high prices, we’d be regulars.

This was a great stop for lunch consisting of Gazpacho, sandwiches — Shrimp salad and chicken salad, applesauce, and apple walnut muffins. Everything was well prepared and delicious. Service was provided enthusiastically and timely. We will definitely be back!

Birch tree café was AMAZING! The owner is passionate about creating the healthiest, yet most delicious food. Everything is gluten free here but tastes incredible. Organic veg and vegan options as well. Delish green smoothies and they even have hemp protein as an add. They only serve lunch, between 10:30 and 4:00, but you can get the most delicious muffin before then and coffee and tea. I highly recommend eating here!

You can eat anything here if you eat GF. Kathy makes all the baked goods including a nice bread. And the muffins are fab! BTW they freeze well. I always get some to take home.
Try to stop by in
July in peach season when she gets fruit from the orchard down the street. I had peach/​pecan muffins hot out of the oven last year.
For lunch we had the BLT and the chickpea sandwiches paired with fire roasted tomato soup.
Don’t forget to stroll thru the natural grocery in the same space for yummy GF and other goodies.

100% dedicated Gluten-​Free kitchen! Love the chicken salad sandwich (made with grapes, not celery), also bought some GF bread and GF crostini to bring home.

I was told that for vegetarian or vegan food, go here. There aren’t really many options that don’t include meat actually. The vegan carrot ginger soup was delicious as well as the smoothie. This is a better option for those who are gluten free, not really veg*ns.

A very tasty, healthy, pleasant surprise. Visited 3 times one weekend. Had the Carrot Cashew Ginger Soup, Chicken Salad Sandwich, and Maple Chocolate Chip muffin & really delicious. Very light and tasty. No celery in chicken salad, for a grateful change! You won’t get sleepy after eating here. A local favorite. I’m happy I ate there.

This is one of my favorite spots in the area. Great if you want a break from the egg/​home fries fare in most places. You are guaranteed a nutritious and tasty lunch and they are always coming up with new items on the menu.
I like that it is family run and attached to the organic food market.
The are kind of tucked away on 26 but definitely worth a visit!
