Sunoco

I have been here several times over the last few years. They often will recommend additional and unnecessary services– which I guess is not unusual for a shop, right? I started just going to my dealership when I bought a new car.
Anyway, today, I had made an appointment to get my turn signal replaced and head lamps cleaned. The gentleman over the phone did not for me an estimate for the cleaning, and told me to ask when I arrived. Upon arrival, the auto tech quoted between $ 100-​$ 150 and could not settle on a price. He appeared unwilling to do the service that I had booked an appointment for. I wound up calling Jiffy Lube, who does the cleaning for $ 70, by the way.

Came in for an inspection here – close to my home and had a coupon from a Giant receipt. It was a decent deal and I was in and out fast.

I did not get a repair done; but I came here to get my car (2005 Lexus RX330 inspected after having gone to the dealer. Joe (the service manager) told me the exact same thing that the dealers told me, which was that my car had 2 leaks in the power steering system. Only difference is that Joe didn’t charge me $ 130 like the dealer did. In addition, Joe’s quote was $ 140 cheaper than my dealer’s quote (1210 vs 1350). Based on honesty and knowledge alone, Joe has certainly won my business.

I am up early getting ready to drive what we affectionately call our car «Moby Dick» to the Oakton Sunoco, Off at one of the 100 times it has been here in 10 years. It has over 200k and is 14 years old. I think Oakton Sunoco can take credit for keeping our cars alive and helping me support my kids in college and not a car payment.
I miss Kevin the manager, I now miss Andrew the second manager… yes we have been here a long time.
Sometimes they have goofed, but always fixed my complaint. They give me a ride home when they can. Have done emergency visits for my kids cars before I put them on the road back to college.
They have always taken good care of the 6 cars we own.
A special shout out to Dave, who is a great great mechanic… and hates our Volvo .it’s a 1986. But it still goes to the metro every day. Thank you Dave for putting up with it. I know everything in that car is rusted, old, and makes your job very hard. You labor and sweat over that rusty old bucket of a car. You can’t just fix that car… it’s like an old man… you have to coddle it, jury rig repairs, and sometimes create parts or special repairs. Thank you.

Awesome staff and great service. Very ethical and honest people. I am talking about the automobile services they offer and the gas station. Wouldn’t go anywhere else!

I really can’t say enough good things about this place, and I am pretty demanding.
On my way to a winery, my brand new, six day old new car gets a terrible flat. PSI down to 3, utterly undrivable. I am understandably very upset and at a gas station down the road that does nothing with tires. A woman at that gas station recommended this place so I called to see if they could fit me in. The man on the phone said yes, but that it would be a long wait because they were busy, Understandable because it was a Saturday, but still frustrating because of my situation, though not the place’s fault.
Put a donut on my car to drive it to the Sunoco and I go in and speak with Andrew, who was busy but never made me feel like a bother. He came right out and looked at my tire and told me to give him a few minutes to see if it could be plugged and to just wait for a bit. No problem– it was great he was so friendly and sympathetic to my situation.
After a few minutes, he told me he fixed it and that if I pulled to to the bay, he would throw it right in my car for me. I couldn’t believe how quickly it was done. I pulled around and he put it on my car. I was ready to pretty much pay whatever since he saved my day and on top of his friendliness, quickness and overall awesomeness, he gave me a special deal and I had literally had to shove a tip at him– he didn’t want to take it. He was so helpful in a very stressful situation and I cannot say enough good things about Andrew and the establishment in general.
Good service, particularly in the car repair business and particularly for a female, can be hard to find. Andrew and Oakton Sunoco truly saved the day and I highly recommend them for their respectful service and empathy.

I recently brought my car in for servicing, and I had a very satisfying experience. Though Unilocal shows low ratings for poor services in the past, it seems to have turned around in recent years.
My car failed the state inspection, but the shop assistants helpfully recommended different ways to repair the issue, without any pressure for additional sales or services. With their advice, I decided to schedule an appointment with a mechanic to fix the issue. The repairs took a little longer than I had anticipated, but it wasn’t an easy job, and I’m very satisfied with their work.
Ask for Andrew, he is very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful.

I had come here for a state inspection, but this was my first time having any work done on the car. My car’s brake light on the dashboard had been turning on and off, and the fixes associated with a known issue with the model hadn’t worked. The mechanic quickly found a leak in the brake line (and didn’t see any other problems), and they went to work fixing it right away. The service manager was very friendly, and I was impressed by how he explained to another customer that her car had significant problems (passing the inspection would require such and such, but actually making the car safe would require much more) and that she would be better off putting her money into a new car. It wasn’t news she wanted to hear, but I thought the information was conveyed well.

Very disappointing. This used to be our «go to place» for auto maintenance. Since Kevin left, it has gone down hill. The people there act like they’re too busy to service your car. Nothing about it is welcoming. I will definitely NOT go back.

Went in for an oil change for my 2011 Hyundai Sonata. I brought the Hyundai oil filter from the dealership and they agreed to my request to install that filter instead of their filter. Smooth process from start to finish and the amount they discounted from the final bill for the filter was just a dollar less than the Hyundai filter, which probably means the filter they normally use should also be a good quality one. They used Sunoco brand engine oil of grade 5W-​20. Since summer weather just started here in VA I’m a bit surprised they haven’t switched to a higher-​grade oil yet, but since I will do an oil change every 3000 miles I’m not that concerned. John was nice to deal with and the mechanic who did the oil change was thorough and decent. The workshop itself is very clean, neat and organized, which really impressed me. Overall experience (for just an oil change) is positive.
Note: To be fair, I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because this is my first oil change outside of an express service shop (Jiffy Lube, etc) and I have nothing to compare it to.

I had been going here since I moved to No. VA. about 10 years. Usually had a very good experience. I’m not sure what happened. There used to be a manager Kevin who was great and since he left… horrible.
1^st bad experience — scheduled an inspection, emissions, and oil change for 7:30 am. I waited over 3 hours! When they said it was done, I noticed they didn’t do the emissions. They were aggravated at me!!! and said they couldn’t do it. I fought it and they did it.
2^nd bad experience — My windshield wiper stopped working at lunch. I called to say that it wouldn’t move all the way up and asked if they could look at it. He seemed again, aggravated that I was bothering him. He said I could bring it in but most likely it was the wiper transmission (?) and they would have to order the part so I’d have to leave it overnight.
I stopped at another gas station on my way there, Fair Lakes Sunoco, and the guy after hearing it, grabbed a wrench, walked me out, tightened a bolt, and sent me on my way! You know where I’ll be going back to.
Sorry Oakton Sunoco… you’ve changed!

Pretty squared away mechanics at this shop, in my experience.
My first experience with them was with a simple inspection — the hitch being that I had just replaced the battery that morning. Mentioning in passing that I put a battery in, they were very straightforward with me, stating that until I had about 50 miles of driving in the car, the car would fail emissions automatically, as removing the battery had ‘wiped’ the computer, and it needed a baseline of use to know it it was performing to specs. Their honesty was refreshing.
Simple honesty doesn’t rate five stars, however, it was the brake work they did on my ‘camping car’ an older 2000 Jeep that had seen too much mud and road salt. They did a great job on replumbing and essentially replacing the rear brakes from the master cylinder on back.
Tl;dr These guys are great; honest and quality work.

I got both brakes changed here and they charged me an arm and a leg and I don’t think they did a good job because a week later my car went right back to squeeking when I brake. While I was there I had them test my battery. I was told by battery was in good shape and that I have another 2yrs on it. A few months later I go there again because my engine light was on and my car wouldn’t turn on. The guy was almost positive it was the battery. I told you they had checked the battery a few months ago and I got two thumbs. The guy checks the battery and says it’s at 50% which is not good. He says he sees this all the time. An engine light for a low battery? Really? I went against my gut and allowed him to change the battery. Poor judgment on my part. He seems very confident, so i let him change the battery. Surprise, surprise, it wasn’t the battery. I would stay away from this place. On top of that the service staff is very unfriendly except for the supervisors and gas station cashier. I’ve spent about $ 2,000 at this shop and all I got was a crummy brakes job and a poorly diagnosed car problem.

I have been going to this gas station for my state inspection & emission for about 9 years now… and from my last visit, I will not be getting my vehicle serviced there again…
After my visit from a couple of days ago, I do not think this place deserves any stars. Yes, not even 1! I have never had a bad experience at this gas station before. I saw the bad review from the beginning of this year, I was hesitant to go there but I took my chance. I will definitely not return!
Needless to say the guy who did my inspection was apparently «too busy» to remove a broken/​rusted off lugnut off my wheel. He said he had a line (2 cars left in the line) & removing the lugnut would take too much of his time. He told me I go to a tire place to get it removed. Either way, he didn’t help me with any questions. For instance, I asked him if it was okay to drive without a lugnut, he said I would not recommend you to drive too long… if it was a rusted lugnut (from when I bought the tires, it was a year ago), I already drove too long on it… UGH!
Anyway, a few mechanics were nice but for those other ones… I know you guys are the expert in repairs but there is something called CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Don’t worry I will write a review for the tire place too!

Women beware!
I don’t know if my wife was treated differently because she is a woman. It’s not unheard of at auto shops. But maybe the case is just how far downhill this place has gone.
When I first moved to Oakton three years ago, this was my go-​to place. I could drop my car off for an oil change, go grab Starbucks in the nearby shopping center and they’d call me to let me know my car was ready before I could finish my coffee.
But lately, this place has tanked. I recently took my car there because I had a tire that wouldn’t hold air. They kept my car all day before bothering to call and tell me that they couldn’t find an issue. I later took my car the next weekend to a different place and they resealed the tire and it was fine. Each time I’ve taken my car there since then, it’s just gotten worse. They keep taking longer and longer to do a simple oil change, even when there aren’t many cars in the lot waiting.
This weekend, my wife took her car there to drop it off. We arrived early Saturday morning when the place opened and there weren’t many other cars there yet at all. She had to have been one of the first. So she walks in, and the bald guy (who always works the counter and has always been very grumpy, but the older guy who runs the place has always been very nice when I’ve interacted with him) at the counter asks if she has an appointment. THEY HAVE NEVER asked me to make an appointment before. Maybe this is something new to try and address their timeliness issues, I don’t know. But they told my wife they would take her car and get to it by the end of the day. She said that’s fine, as I was following her to pick her up in my car and take her home, but that she absolutely needed the car back by the end of the day so she could go to work.
Fast forward several hours. No call. Nothing. We drove by the place on our way to lunch, and her car still hadn’t moved. On our way back from dinner, we drove by again, and it had. But we’d never received a call, and now the place was closed. So the next morning, we go to the Sunoco and she goes in and they tell her they did do an oil change but they had intended to call her the following day!!! Why would they (A) not call the same day the work was done or (B) at the very least call the next day, but THE THIRD DAY?! Sure am glad we checked! Ridiculous.
And here’s the kicker: The guy told my wife that her car was leaking coolant, so she might want to have that looked at. Not, «Oh, hey we tried calling you to tell you that you’re leaking coolant to see if you wanted us to fix it while we have your car or order a part.» Nope. Just, basically, «Hey, you have a problem. Sucks for you. Oh, and we’ll just see how long it takes you to come find that out.»
Despite being very loyal to this place for a few years now, I’m finished. It’s completely become a royal pile of crap when it comes to auto shops. I’m not sure where I’m going to try next, but anywhere has got to be faster, friendlier and more responsive and proactive with customers than the Oakton Sunoco.

This place is right around the corner from me and I go there for various yearly inspections, fill-​ups, and car repairs. I also must add that I go because I can shop in the Oakton Shopping Center while I’m waiting for my car to be looked at! Never had a problem and have had very good service… including tires, oil changes, referrals to family in town for the weekend, etc… The price is good, the location is great, and the guys are always very friendly.
