This is a very friendly dental office and the entire staff right from the receptionist to the assistants are exceptional in their service to the patients. They go out of their way to make the patients comfortable and work as a team alongside the dentist. Very detailed and upfront about everything, no unnecessary pricing or up selling. Entertained a last minute appointment.
Dr. Chan is very very considerate and he is all about making his patients comfortable. He is very honest and knowledgeable and wants to provide the best service to his clients. He made sure I was referred to the absolute best root canal specialist and insisted his front office to follow-​up with the specialist until I was taken in for emergency.
I highly recommend this dental office!

Dr Chan is a great dentist. He is unique in that he actually enjoys doing the cleanings (unlike other dental offices where the dentist only comes in for a couple seconds to check the hygienists work). Dr. Chan recommends over the counter solutions in addition to higher quality dental solutions. He also remembers me! He is friendly and checks up on my life during our visit (sometimes its hard because he tries to have a conversation during the cleaning haha but I appreciate the personal interest in his patients). I enjoy the staff, they are very professional.

is it possible to give a business zero stars? His dental assistant is dumb. He charges a huge amount of money for dental work. It’s ridiculous. I got billed for $ 700. what!!! and this is WITH insurance.

Dr. Chan is very meticulous, conscientious and considerate towards his client.
Customer service is EXCELLENT. Looking up a new dentist can be daunting. Seeing such a high review on Unilocal,I called in to Dr. Chan’s office to ask for a quote. The receptionist was very sweet, instead of ignoring my direct question she asked me a series of question to help me understand how much I would be paying. She even looked up my plan and break it down for me. I am with Delta Dental and the whole deep cleaning and x-​ray expense came out to be $ 20 for me. No additional charge and very clearly explained and documented.
Dental Assistant is also EXCELLENT! Never have I met such a gentle and observational assistant before (Alma) in all my 10 years in the US. Before the dentist began cleaning my teeth, Alma gave me sunglasses to wear to prevent the dental lights from blinding me. As the dentist was cleaning my teeth, Alma would occasionally wipe my face from all the water splashing as my teeth was being cleaned so that I wouldn’t look like a wreck walking back to work from the dentist. She was also very gentle with tools assistance for my mouth. Not only that, but they both make such a great team!
Finally, Dr. Chan did an amazing job and what’s better is that he doesn’t make his clients feel like an idiot. I am very curious by nature and I appreciated Dr. Chan explaining to me why the xrays are taken and what he looks for in them. As we move on with the cleaning process, Dr. Chan continues to walk me through the process and occasionally checking on me on how I am feeling — does it hurt or is it okay. Dr. Chan is very professional and laid back, he is not the typical smiley doctor, he is very informational, to the point and makes sure that your questions will get answered.
I will definitely come here again! =D

You know you found a great dentist when the numbing injection they give you is completely painless! Dr. Chan’s staff was also able to squeeze me into their schedule on very short notice which was so convenient.
I had a cleaning done which was done by Dr. Chan and was painless. Also all the staining from tea and wine is gone! I also had a few fillings done and the work was done quickly and efficiently.
The staff is warm and the office is clean. I would recommend Dr. Chan to anyone looking for a gentle and honest dentist.

Non-​judgmental, friendly, and SUPER gentle with cleaning. Like others mentioned, the staff is also awesome and helpful. If I could give 6 stars I would.

I had several dissatisfying experiences with dentists before trying Dr. Chan, and generally I am really anxious about seeing dentists. My first appointment here the office was running behind and I couldn’t be seen until half an hour later than scheduled, but my cleaning and check-​up went well and everyone was so apologetic that I gave it another shot. Now I LOVE going here. It’s incredibly convenient for BARTing, they have Saturday availability, Dr. Chan is communicative and gives thorough feedback about any questions I have and keeps me updated on things to look out for to keep my teeth healthy. The staff there are all friendly and efficient and are happy to explain anything about billing or making appointments. The teeth cleaning is sometimes messy but I think the efficiency of the cleaning is soooo worth it. I was just in and out for a cleaning within 20 minutes! Dr. Chan also continues to invest in the office and every time I go he has a new upgraded device that makes my visit more pleasant (this time was some kind of mouth tool that is quieter than the one they had last time I was there).

Hands down… The best dental, screening, X-​ray. Cleaning, and consultation I think I have EVER had in my life! Not located in the most desired business area downtown, but considering downtown Oakland needs much Revitalization… The area isn’t bad at all. Close to 19^th St BART/​and they even offer to validate your parking up to 1 hr. Appointments can also be accommodated on Saturdays –for certain procedures. Dr. Chan does your cleanings along with a dental hygienist– who also does your series of X-​rays. Dr Chan explanations and recommendations are appreciated. His office staff is quiet, efficient, and extremely polite. I can’t believe I’m actually looking forward to my next appointment in a couple weeks

i’m so sad that i can no longer see dr. chan because i moved back to LA. he was always so nice and at the same time, efficient. we chatted a lot about his kids who are attending college (i’m a recent grad, or use to be a couple years ago lol). despite moving around in the bay area, he was always my dentist. his staff is also super friendly. this is kind of sadistic, but he made teeth cleaning quite enjoyable. in fact, since i will be visiting the bay area this weekend, i’m going to try to see if i can squeeze in an appt with him. book ahead, especially for weekends, he fills up fast!

Dr. Chan continues to be a great dentist. He’s not a super warm and fuzzy personality, but he is practical, has a sort of sardonic/​cynical sense of humor, gives no-​BS advice on tooth care, and he does a good job of cleaning teeth (i.e., it doesn’t hurt and more than would seem necessary). And I do still like that he’s the one doing the cleaning.
This morning I went in for a regular cleaning and, when I asked him how business is, he said: «Steady, which is good. I don’t want to be so busy I can’t enjoy the practice of dentistry.» I think he was being sincere, and it’s awesome that (a) he’s not in a rush; and (b) actually enjoys what he is doing.

I had made an appointment thinking I would be able to get a wisdom tooth pulled, because it had broke in my mouth. I called to make sure the extraction would be done at my appointment, and the receptionist said no Dr Chan doesn’t do extractions. I was so disappointed. I went in for my appt expecting to get a referral to a surgeon. Dr Chan was great. He had a colleague in the neighborhood and I was able to get the referral and extraction done the same day! No waiting at all; he just emailed the dentist a picture of my x-​ray, and badda-​bing, done! I was at my appt for the extraction in less than 30 minutes. I was so happy! Looking forward to future appointments. Dr Chan definitely gets the job done!

Dr. Chan is so good! First cleaning was rough, but he listened to my survey comments and was much better afterwards!
I had to see him 5 times in about 2 months because I had been neglectful with my teeth. I had my teeth cleaned, cavities filled, and crown put in. Each time I went in, he was sure to ask if i was in pain during my procedures. He was very considerate, especially since he asked me to clarify what I meant by being «rough» and if his techniques had improved since my first visit.
His staff are really friendly. By the 3^rd visit, they were greeting me by my name as soon as I walked in. I’m sure it’s because they were expecting me but it was still nice.

Very good experience with Doctor Chan. Got everything explained carefully, and shown on the xrays and in my mouth. Even showed me the tooth inside during the treatment. Anaesthetic injection was painless. He worked quickly and thoroughly.
Dr. Chan runs an individual practice. He’s the only dentist there, and he does everything himself — from cleaning to filling to root canal. So you get to actually spend time with him instead of hygienists and specialists. No dentist I ever had has taken that much time to work with me and explain stuff. Everybody around the office is very nice and helpful. I’m very happy after initial treatment.
Update: I’m a Regular with Dr Chan, as is my family. I would say he’s the best dentist I ever had.

Admittedly I don’t have much experience with dentists, however my experience with Dr. Chan and his staff was my most pleasant ever.
Dr.Chan was conversational and sensitive to my comfort, and did not once shame me for the years of neglect I have subjected my teeth too.
They drew up a quote for some works that needs doing, and his staff were really helpful in advising me on how to work this into my budget.

Definitely the best dentist I have been too! Dr. Chan is attentive, meticulous and conscious of your time. He is the only dentist I have ever been to that seems to be really empathetic about whether you’re in pain. He constantly asks you if what he is doing is causing you pain… The staff is also honest, conscientious, and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend going to Dr. Chan’s office!

Doctor Chan is one of the best dentists I have ever visited. I am lucky to not have any need for fillings, but I do get my teeth cleaned three time a year. When I move from San Francisco to Oakland, I was at first hesitate to swtich doctors, but I have been to Dr. Chan for a year now and I am so impressed with the great job he does for my teethcleaning. He is gentle and very detail-​oriented in his work. Plus, he is very efficient, so I am always in and out on time. Dr. Chan is also open on Satrudays, so it is easier to work with that schedule-​wise. There is also validated parking nearby, so I never have to hunt for parking or worry about carrying quarters.
