Cozy and clean with an impressive selection of beer. That would have been enough for me. Service is what put this place over the top. When a group of patrons show up, occupy seats, and each nurse a drink for over an hour, I don’t expect the bartender to keep up a friendly disposition and continue to offer recommendations.

I frequent the Trappist in old Oakland. Love the beer, love the location. Never really came here although it’s in my neighborhood, pretty much because of the nit bit early closing hours compared to its original. I loved that it was a lot quieter and relaxed. Really wanted to love the experience. There was only one person tending the bar on a Friday night, and I guess that is okay(?) as it serves a more intimate/casual atmosphere to it rather than making it a lousy bar. I had to try find the right time to ask for something, because he was either pouring or washing or talking most of the time, a bit discouraging to really get more things. Yet everything was fine, and then over and over I felt uneasy about how the bartender approached our group. Not too friendly around the corners. It did it for me when he made his«last call» at 11:26 pm, as they close at midnight. Really? Would’ve had another round of drinks, but he just pretty much chased us out. Thanks. I’ll probably turn around and go somewhere else if I see the same person working here. Shame.

I really like this place for a no-frills spot to grab a nice beer before dinner in Rockridge. The place is really small, but I’ve surprisingly never had an issue getting a space to sit, even at what would seem like a peak hour. Usually about six beers on tap, but they do have a refrigerator full of bottled options that you can drink there or take out(I assume). Bartenders have that super-chill Oakland vibe and are happy to steer you to a selection to fit your style. They also have a small food/snack menu if you need something to take the edge off that 8% ABVIPA!

I wish I had a spot like this near my home on the peninsula so I could relax with a fine beer and relaxed atmosphere. I’ll be back every time I wander over to that side of the bay. Thrilled with my visit here.

Had some nice tap beers(a Berliner wit, a lager, and a porter) in a cozy, chill setting, with the mushroom pâté(they give you a lot, just ask for more bread). Nice.

Awesome craft brew spot. Not an overwhelming amount of tapped beers, seemed to me like just the right amount. Attractive food options. Small bites only so don’t come here expecting full size portions Cute décor. Hanging plants, stainless steel tap handle set up, glass door fridges with oodles of bottled craft brew options. I think you can make your own 6-pack (like Trader Joe’s but offers a much larger craft beer selection, remember that it’s pricier) The bar attendant was on top of it. Pleasant guy, and offered me samples A bit rowdy the day i visited, but e’rrybody was enjoying their time. Thumbs up. Will be back.

Talk about an amazing beer experience. The wonderful people at Trappist Provisions know their stuff and do everything in their power to help you find that one brew that will make your tastebuds cry out in joy. One of the elements lacking around the Bay Area craft beer scene are bars more focused on Belgium beers with bartenders who know what they are talking about. This is a great spot for anybody who wants to not only sample some of the most amazing American beer but also experiencing the tradition and sophistication of European beer! + Fantastic bottle selection(depending on availability and season. Beers range from Sante Adairius to Cantillon) + Wonderfully curated draught list + Beautiful bar + Awesome music and ambiance + Knowledgeable bartenders + Roomy without being too large or too small + Immaculate tap cleanliness The only places I would rather have Belgium beers would probably be in… Belgium. Stop in and see for yourself

Stopped here on my visit up north. It’s a great little spot. Amazing selection of beers. The person on staff that day wasn’t very helpful, but the ambiance is very laid back and chill. It is kind of small, but this is a must stop if you find yourself in the area.

I just love tucking in to this little gem of a taproom. A great selection of beers on tap and a great variety of suds to take with you too. Nice little bites to give you some ballast for consuming your beer to round out the experience.

Perfect place for all your sours, saisons, wilds, lambic, gose, even berliner weisse. Upscale atmosphere. You can bring food from Southie next door. Bottles can be taken out or drank there. Lots of taps.

Tasty and creative beer list. Helpful server who was willing to give plenty of samples. Interesting looking bottle selection. Biased towards the more creative beers(sours, IPAs, saisons etc) and away from the less-balanced beers, but that was enjoyable. Biggest problem was the noise. It started out ok, but after an hour on a Monday evening(by around 8pm) it was getting too loud to hear others talk. I think the acoustics are the biggest problem here. We ended up leaving early because it was getting tiring yelling. Would go back, but would certainly be hoping that it was quiet.

Far less crowded and far more intimate version of the original Trappist down in Old Oakland. While the food menu isn’t anywhere near as extensive of the original, the menu of beers on tap is quite decent and well-considered. They even have refrigerators full of beer offerings that you can pick and choose from to take home. Service is also personal and friendly, given the smaller neighborhood-level scale here. Highly recommended for a pre– or post-meal drink along this budding dining corridor — or any time they’re open, for that matter.

Though I am more of a wine drinker, I appreciate good beer. Hoppy, malty, chocolatey, or sour – I like them all if they have good flavor! We finally had a chance to have beer here at Trappist Provisions. We’ve passed by it many times on our way to lunch or dinner at Wood Tavern and Southie, but have never been. Thankfully, an opportunity arose and we took it. I grabbed a wonderful little table by the window and waited for the hubby who had gone up to the counter to order a couple of beers. They don’t have table service, so you’ll have to order at the bar and find a seat somewhere. It’s not a very big place, so if all the tables are taken, you might have drink your beer at the bar. The menu of their beers on tap must change frequently as it was dated with that day’s date. There were beers brewed in Sweden, Switzerland, and etc… The hubby came back with two different bottles of Belgian beer and half-filled beer glasses. I had the lighter of the two(both in color and alcohol %). Mine was 8% ABV and his was 9% ABV. Wowza! Strong beers! They were both very good though. They were a little pricey($ 8.50 for a little less than 12 ounces), but they are imported from Belgium! We didn’t have food as we were planning on having dinner with friends soon, but they do have some bites that’ll go with your beer. If you’re not wanting to drink a beer in the store, they have lots of beers in bottles that you can purchase to take home. Part of the fun is browsing and looking at their diverse collection of ales from all over the world. We may be back to do that, as well as refresh ourselves with one of their beers on tap!

Came by a co-worker’s recommendation. Not very busy on a Sunday afternoon, but considering the limited seating, we were lucky to grab the last table for four. Beers were ok, but nothing great from our first round. One of us ordered an Almanac Farmer’s Reserve Citrus which we all agreed was incredibly sour. Not a fan, but if you like sours you may enjoy it. Appreciate the rotation and ability to try new beers I haven’t ever heard of before. If you’re looking for a mellow spot for conversation and craft beer, this is your spot.

Great little beer place(except for the guy in the Seahawks shirt). Just be patient it can get busy and there no food or snacks. They have a couple sours and we loved both! Would come back if I was in the area! Want to try the IPAs!

If you’re looking for the perfect ‘neighborhood’ joint to stop off and have a beer, Trappist Provisions is just the thing. After an exceptionally long walk around Lake Meritt on a rather warm Sunday, the bae and I decided we needed a cold, refreshing beer, and stat. Sure it was 10 minutes out of the way from where we had just spent an hour or so walking, but we were aching for a thoughtfully curated tap list with great options, and made haste on our way to the Trappist. For a Sunday afternoon it was pretty mellow, the bar was full of(I’m guessing) regulars who seemed to be chatting it up with the savvy tap-tender, but he still accommodated us quickly and gave good suggestions when we couldn’t settle on any particular beers. I ended up with a minerally — low abv — beer while my beau nabbed a cool looking farmhouse style from Spain that was right up our alley. The casual vibe at the Trappist Provisions was just what we were looking for, and the space itself was really relaxing. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere to relax in the Rockridge neighborhood and I’d love to go back and spend a few hours there knocking back a few in the near future.

This place is truly a neighborhood spot. It’s a place you can easily miss if you’re not looking for it which is a good thing because it’s not your typical beer pub. So if you’re looking to watch the game, order burger & fries and wash it down with yet another $ 5 pint West Coast IPA, this is NOT it. The Trappist offers a different kind experience. The kind that introduces you to exceptional craft beers from across the country & world on tap in addition to bottled beers. It’s a conversational starter about appreciating artisan beer even if you know nothing about the origin of saison(Belgian farmhouse ale). Some Unilocalers are Unilocaling about small space, overpriced«beers», boring atmosphere… they simply don’t get it. There is a growing population that are beginning to treat craft beer as seriously as fine wine, and the Trappist is a conduit for exploration. My choice on a Saturday night with just me & my book, sitting at the window spot: 8 Wired iStout. A bold, fresh Russian Imperial Stout oozing with coffee & chocolate malt flavors; the perfect winter brew. At 10.5% ABV, it’s not for the faint of heart. Paired with Duck Rillette served with a slab of fresh baked bread. The stout had just enough bitterness to cut through the richness of the dish, great combo.

Love this second outpost of the Trappist. Located on College Ave in the heart of numerous top Oakland restaurants, the place is perfect for brews before and/or after a meal. Case in point, my friends and I stopped by for a drink before dinner at Ramen Shop nearby. The selection is just as well-curated as the original with top notch international selections and no shortage of hard-to-find beers including numerous sours. Chilled bottles can be purchased and opened on premise as well. Though I haven’t tried the food just yet, a return visit will certainly be in order.

Came by Trappist Provisions earlier this year because I showed up an hour early for my reservation at a nearby restaurant. Since I had some time to kill, I thought, why not have a beer?! The space is really small. Just some tables and a small bar in the back. The roommate and I grabbed a couple of seats at the bar and decided on the following beers. Fort point brewing kolsch($ 6): Usa, 4.6% abv The roommate is not a big drinker, let alone a beer drinker, so he ordered this lighter beer. Menu described it as having«biscuity aromas and crisp grainy flavors». If you want something lighter, this was kind of refreshing. Bfm cuvee alex le rouge($ 9.50): Switzerland, 10.3% abv This was my beer. I’m a big drinker, but not a big beer drinker, so I thought, why not get the highest percentage of alcohol?! Lol! This lovely imperial stout is brewed with black peppercorn, russian tea and bourbon vanilla. This is not a beer for the light of heart as it is heavy, but great complexity of flavors. I’m glad I stumbled upon this place since I’ve been trying to develop my taste for beer. A great little find on College Avenue.

What a cool little place! I would have never stumbled upon it if my friend Lindsey had not dragged me here. The scene: today is my birthday, and my East Bay buddies Lindsey and Scott would not let me sit at home, wallowing in self-pity, empty calories, and booze. Instead, we purchased a vegan pizza from Zachary’s and brought it inside. It’s super cool that they allow outside food in their establishment! The wooden tables are very rustic yet cozy. Take heed: the wooden benches do wobble a bit if you are rocking back and forth in a drunken stupor or telling an especially engaging story using body language to exaggerate the punchline. I tried the Beer Flight, which they offer on Wednesday nights. Tonight’s offerings: Local Option: Morning Wood Mikkeller: Beer Hop Breakfast To Ol: Black Malts and Body Salts Evil Twin: Imperial Biscotti Break Natale I’m normally one to imbibe lighter beers, but 3 out of the 4 were dark. The Morning Wood was my favorite(not just for the clever, pervy name, but also for its refreshing flavor). I also had a glass of the Stillwater Débutante. This was delightful. Very whimsical and tantalizing. Almost like a boozy apple juice, but not as fruity as a cider. I enjoyed this one a lot. My friend saw me admiring a can of the Hipster Ale(yes, there is a beer called Hipster Ale!), and bought it for me. This did taste eerily similar to a PBR, so it was not my all-time favorite, but I mostly just desired it for the glaring irony of drinking from a can with HIPSTER boldly written on it. This is not a dive by any means. The clientele were a group of respectful and well-behaved sirs and madams. I felt like we were the loudest, rowdiest folks in the whole joint. No matter, it was a birthday celebration, and I was enjoying myself thoroughly. Major props to the bartender and the staff. They worked hard keeping up with our ever-growing stack of empty glasses. I tip my hat to you, good sirs.
