All the worrying I did beforehand paid off, or it didn’t. Did you know that if you have someone younger than sixteen with you, you can go through pre-​check? Really? Why haven’t I brought my niece along before? I could have saved so much time being patted down. I mean, what terrorist would ever bring a child on a plane? That would never happen, right? No, terrorists are in the habit of being between the ages of sixteen and seventy-​five. They never use unwitting accomplices to carry out their plans. Just more proof that the national-​security state is more interested in scaring you than in actually protecting you.
The flight was fine. My niece wasn’t very scared. She didn’t need to be. We’re killing ourselves worrying about things that are unlikely to happen. We should just change our foreign policy. That would save us trillions of dollars.
