History

Established in 1939.

The Montclair Recreation Center and Park were built by the Works Progress Administration in 1939 – 40. This was a program to put people back to work after the Great Depression. The original building consisted of just the front lobby and a bathroom. Later additions included the teen room, pottery studio and art room. Recently the building and park have undergone renovations and modifications to be accessable for people with dis-abilities. The original stone work on the building and low pathway walls wre constructed from locally quaried stones.

The pond was originally a natural spring. It is now an extention of the Lake Merritt Bird Sanctuary and the birds and wild life are protected by state and federal laws.
