History

Established in 2007.

As Mercurius I have been making jewelry professionally since 1997. I started out in the industry a casting specialist, quickly moving on to a «learn on the job» head bench jeweler position where I was required to keep up with the pace of a popular Walnut Creek Jewelry store. After four years I left to seek out an apprenticeship with a European Master Jeweler where I was able to refine my skills and work under the guidance of one of my most influencial teachers.

After another four years of working in his studio I struck out on my own and started Wormgear Designs making custom jewelry for friends and family. Popularity and referrals followed and soon I had contracts with a few clients doing larger mass productions of their originals.

With the growing desire to focus more on the customizable side of making things, I decided to let go of Wormgear Designs and take a new direction with Mercurius.

Meet the Business Owner

David T.

Business Owner

I have had the great privilege of studying under and around some of the most charismatic and creative artisans I could hope for. If not for their guidance I would not be where I am in the world.

In 1997 I graduated from the California of Arts and Crafts with a BFA in metalworking, during which I studied briefly with Marty Streich. He instilled in me the notion that creative impulse was not a thing to be pushed into a box, but ridden like a wild horse until it brings you a place you’ve never seen before.

In 2000 I met Bob Winston, an eccentric Jeweler and sculptor who was one of the pioneers of California Modernism. He showed me through example that life in very much like a dream, and if you can capture some of life’s expression, you can be part of its process.

In 2001 I had the honor of meeting Thadeus Hutten-CZapski, a Polish Master Craftsman who took me under his wing. He was very opinionated about quality in life and art. He offered his lifetime of experience and skill.
