Specialties

Because drawing is the new painting and because cartoons and the graphic novel have slipped into American art culture, I have created a line of jewelry to satisfy the playfulness in us all. I have always loved drawing and creating cartoon characters and abstract botanical forms. The characters featured in my work start as doodles and become jewelry only through a long editing and selection process, and then are translated into screen prints that are fired onto the surface of the enamel.

My studio is in Oakland, California where I first learned how to make jewelry, and later enameling, at Studio One Art Center. All of my work is made of kiln-​fired vitreous enamels on sterling silver pieces that are made from hand-​carved wax models cast in the lost-​wax process. Color is built in layers through hand application of wet enamel. Learning to make jewelry allowed me to combine my passion for metalwork, my love of rich, bold colors, and my array of cartoon characters into fun jewelry.

i have so many of Mark Poulin’s pieces but I am addicted and can never have enough. I have the silver pieces and the enamel pieces, I have the botanicals and the characters and the modern. I just find that no matter what I am wearing there is a Mark Poulin piece that goes with it.
Plus I love doing business with him, he is such a gentleman and a wonderful artist with such a playful imagination. And I live in Brooklyn, NY — I only wish I lived near the studio so I could catch the studio sale!

Mark Poulin’s jewelry is well designed and well made. However, I managed to jar a pearl loose from an earring. He repaired it promptly and sent it to me by mail — no charge. I’ve worn his jewelry for years and his pieces are timeless. They reflect what a kind and imaginative person he is, on top of being a talented artist.

Mark Poulin makes beautiful silver charm necklaces that suit both my neck and my wallet. I’m a huge fan of the sloths, monkeys and other animals that frequent his collection. Some animals charms are actually sold as «family sets» — you can bring home both momma and baby.
A local, Oakland-​based artist, Mr. Poulin’s jewelry is sold at a variety of stores, including Marion & Rose’s Workshop (

), as well as the Oakland Museum of California. The sterling charm necklaces range in price from $ 29 to $ 65, while enamels retail for $ 36 and up. The rings are particularly cute. He sells paintings as well, which are beautiful and cost around $ 90 — they can be found here:

I was looking for some cute, locally made jewelry to give as gifts to my friends in London and Julie K. mentioned that Mark Poulin as one of her favorites and sent me a link to his website.
Needless to say, I fell in love with his designs! Fun and whimsical and totally fitting with what I wanted to give to my friends.
Julie and I were at Mark’s booth, ogling his jewelry when he turned to help me. I whipped out my little list since I knew exactly what I wanted, a few pieces of his silver Zodiac series. Beautiful and customized to my friends’ zodiac signs. I even bought one for myself!
My friends were utterly enchanted by their gifts and immediately wore them. I felt really happy to see their reactions, knowing that I made the right choice.
I’ve worn my pendent a few times and each time have gotten compliments. I’m looking forward to going to his studio in December for his annual sale.

wow — mark is a very talented artist! if you like sterling silver or enamel work, you need to check out his work. it’s whimsical without being too cutesy and reasonably priced.
he also does prints and a few other things. although his booth at this year’s mountain view art and wine festival had a good representation of his work, definitely visit his website.
knowing he has an annual sale december gives me something to look forward to. what a pity it’s only may.

I’ve been coveting Mark Poulin’s jewelry for a long time now. Every year at the Mountain View Art & Wine Festival, I seek out his booth for my annual fix and tradition of buying myself a birthday present (how convenient that this festival always falls on my b-​day weekend!).
Mark’s jewelry oeuvre is primarily enamel pendants featuring his whimsical line drawings of animals and other charming creatures, such as dogs, squirrels, and little aliens. His colorful creations simply evoke joy and happiness, and I can’t imagine anyone wearing his jewelry ever being sad or cross!
I also love Mark’s newer ventures into organic motifs of leaves, waves, and plants, among other subjects. There were several double-​sided pendants and earrings that I salivated over today, which was no different than in years past. I think I spent a good 30 minutes at Mark’s booth last year trying to decide which treasure to buy. (I finally chose a double-​sided necklace pendant.) This year, I went with earrings featuring a tiny little bird with a cartoon talk bubble overhead. I was very tempted, however, to buy one of the charms from his newest line of zodiac signs. The little Virgo girl was so adorable, and the pendant featured the word «Earth» on the reverse. Maybe next year.
Or maybe I’ll actually have to go to Mark’s studio in December when he has his annual sale. Usually I try to forget about Mark until September rolls around, but I’m afraid I may do some damage to my bank account come the holidays. ;)
