History

Established in 1978.

Over the last 30 years, Gwilliam, Ivary, Chiosso, Cavalli & Brewer has become one of the most successful and respected personal injury, employment, business and consumer law firms in Northern California, particularly in the Bay Area.

The firm was by attorneys J. Gary Gwilliam and Eric Ivary in 1978. Jim Chiosso joined the firm in 1979 and was followed soon thereafter by Steve Cavalli. In 1986, Steve Brewer joined the firm. In 1991, the firm’s name was changed to include each of its partners.

As our goal and focus has always been to provide clients with the compassion and support needed during difficult times, we have established a superior track record for winning cases. We have and continue to secure results that positively impact the lives of our clients and their families far beyond the compensation achieved.

For over 46 years I have specialized in trial work and have tried 180 jury cases on behalf of employees and consumers who have been wronged by the actions of others. For more than a dozen years, my focus has also included mentoring attorneys and others who deal with such challenges as alcoholism, stress release, worklife balance, and dealing with losses with honesty and resilience.

I was honored with the Public Justice Foundation’s Champion of Justice Award of 2009 for leadership and inspiring accomplishments in public interest law. As former president of the Consumer Attorneys of California, where I led the defeat of bogus tort reform propositions that would have severely limited consumer rights, I was named California Lawyer’s «Attorney of the Year» for employment law in 2001. In 2005 I was featured on the cover of the ABA Journal and its story of how attorneys find that some of life’s most important lessons come from defeat.
