History

Established in 2009.

In 2009, Rex the ferocious and I moved into our current space in Old Oakland. At that time, the neighborhood was mostly vacant, and we were in the depth of the recession.

We started with a simple premise: we wanted to be the insurance provider that we would recommend to our friends. This meant that our customers shouldn’t have to ask if we applied all discounts, or if the coverage they had was appropriate. We should take care of these things for them, and act as an advocate regardless of whether or not they would ever find out. And of course, it also meant that our customers hould be able to reach a real person easily, even for the smallest things.

Times change, however, and now we are elbow to elbow with stylish restaurants, amazing bars, and of course, lots and lots of legal offices. But some things don’t change. We still answer the phone, and we still aggressively advocate for our clients, even if they aren’t around to hear us do it.

In my experience (and I’ve been driving since the 1970s), Mike is the best, most responsive, and responsible car insurance agent with whom I have done business.
Mike is well versed in the intricacies of both standard and very unusual claims. I trust him to give me comprehensive information about insurance costs, and I am always confident that Farmers Insurance and Mike have my back.
Not to mention that his extremely sweet dog is the office mascot. It is always a pleasure to work with Mike Clauson.

Mike is NOT a reliable insurance agent to work with. I contacted a few times. He either promises you a call back which never happens or ignore you. I find this to be unprofessional. Mike also pushes you carry a high limit on home and car insurance, pay a higher premium, In fact, H does not give a fig about the financial well-​being and limits of the client, but his own.

Mike is more than an insurance agent, he is an ally for your company. As a new business owner there are many decisions to be made and many companies trying to persuade you to use their services. It can be an extremely frustrating process.
I feel very lucky to have Mike Clauson as my insurance agent and as an ally for my company. He is knowledgeable in his profession and will give you the best personal attention and care, with honesty.
He also adds a touch of humor (when appropriate) and I have found it’s needed sometimes when life circumstances feel too serious.
Upon our initial meeting, I learned that my liability insurance coverage had misclassified my company and realized later how hard it was to reach a real person over the phone.
After having Mike review my coverage in person, and be able to explain coverage options and cost through Farmer’s Insurance, I felt cared for and confident to have him as my agent.

Not all insurance agents are the same! I couldn’t have felt more held and supported than when I reached out to Mr. Clauson in order to get a quote. Mike spent more than half an hour with me on the phone helping me understand the nature of the type of insurance I needed. What I appreciate about Mike is that he is honest. Instead of trying to sell me insurance that I did not need in order to get another sell, he actually encouraged me to go with a quote for a competing company. If he can provide the best insurance, he will. If for some reason (due to my properties circumstances) he isn’t able to, he’ll make sure I know how to get the best deal out there. He helped me understand the difference between types of coverage so that before going with the other quote, I would have the right kind of language to ask the other broker so I could discern whether I was being sold Grade A or Grade D insurance. He went the extra mile for me (even though he didn’t get a sell… this time). I know that in the future, when my insurance needs change, I will always check in with Mike first. As a therapist, I work with people for a living. What stands out for Mike is his integrity and authenticity, and his ability to hold my needs first (whether he benefits or not).

I worked with Mike recently and was extremely happy with how easy and how helpful he was!
He has a ton of knowledge of the products he offers and he will go out of his way to make sure his clients are taken care of. Recently we were working on a policy and he was so patient with me and took the time to explain various options.
A lot of agencies are only worried about selling the policy and will pressure you to buy the policy without fulling understanding it — this is not the case with Mike.
I highly recommend this agent as he knows what he is doing and can write almost any type of insurance. I needed insurance on something that most companies told me they could not write but Mike walked me through it and got it written without a problem.
I look forward to future dealings with him and his agency.

Horrible.
This guy charged my credit card (unauthorized) for the full amount of the premium when I specifically stated that it was to be the initial deposit only. Then, he tells me it wasn’t his fault, that it was his secretary (unprofessional). He tells me to cancel the policy then re-​instate it to get the reimbursement from my bank.
When I inform him that the bank told me that they’ve put a «hold» on the account and that I can’t get access to the money, he tells me to take my business to someone else. Then it took him 2 months to reimburse me (meanwhile, the bank is racking up overdraft charges).
Did he offer to cover the over-​draft charges due to his negligence? Uh… nope! Then to add insult to injury, he doesn’t return the whole amount and tell me that I’m the one being unreasonable!
What a dolt.

When you run around saying «I love my insurance guy», you seem kind of crazy– no one likes insurance agents. Once my friends caught wind of it (possibly because I wouldn’t stop squawking), they called Mike, and with the first interaction, jumped on the Clauson Insurance Agency train.
Besides the policy Mike gave me, and the impeccable follow-​up, attention to you as a client, and all the business-​y parts of it, Mike is a good guy. He’s exactly the kind of person you want to provide you with insurance. The kind of guy that will level with you about your options, and give it to you straight. He also will go to bat for you, and his office will take care of all the drudgeries of stuff like paperwork.
