Enter the Dragon! What is Taiwanese lifestyle most famous for? It’s the nightlife of street food markets! Chef & owner Johnny Chang’s concept design for Dragon Gate is an essence of that very nightlife cuisine, uniquely wrapped and brought to life with a fusion of Oakland flavor, located here in Jack London Square!

Whether it’s gathering with a couple of friends for drinks, great eats, combined with good music, catching the game, hanging out in our surround sound karaōke rooms, Dragon Gate is truly a simulation of that nightlife, nostalgic to many natives, and now here to share in the great community of Oakland!

Taiwanese nightlife cuisine is filled of infused, rich, bold flavors packed in well seasoned finger foods and marinated savory dishes, using local in season goods, to enhance your dining experience.

Business Owner

Chef & owner Johnny Chang began his culinary journey at the age of 15, as a student, taught restaurant style, by a master in Taiwan. He has always had an idea to bring the tastes of the Taiwanese nightlife street markets and bring others the real street food spirit.

Ambiance and main dining interior architecture is very reminiscent of a scene out of a Chinese Kung Fu movie. You’ll feel like the main hero character, stepping off the movie set, here at Dragon Gate.

The movie, Dragon Gate Inn, has a lot of symbolic meaning to Chef Johnny. It speaks to him the same experience he would like to share with all the guests at Dragon Gate Bar and Grille. No matter what your background is, everyone is treated the same here, at Dragon Gate. Come, have a good time of commaderie amongst friends, enjoy god eats and drinks, and have fun all at the same time. Went there to grab a drink as my original thought. the place is really close to Jack London Square and i was just wandering around the place and found this nice bar. Then i was surprised to see the varieties of food on the menu. I ordered some and even surprised more. The food was really good and tasty.
There is a big screen hanging on the wall. I bet the place should be crowded with ball fans when there is game playing, especially now as the Worriers’s play off games going…
Anyway, it is a nice place to go… if you are around the place, should pay a visit there.

This place is packed during the games!
Came here for warriors game 2, and it was pretty crowded. They have a huge projection screen on their wall. The place has two levels and you can rent out the top level for a party. The also do karaōke here as well, however during the game, the rooms can be rented for viewing parties.
During the game, food takes a little while because it’s so packed so order as soon as you can! The food was here was pretty good. They have lots of Yakitori style meat on skewers like lamb, beef, gizzards, hearts, etc…
They also have the typical selection of beer for a bar.
The owner Johnny is very nice and definitely knows how to take care of his customers. The staff were also nice.
Overall definitely a solid place to watch the game or grab a drink if you’re in the area.

Went here after walking around Jack London square. Me and Ariel wanted to get some Chinese food. This place looked like a popular place. The seating looks crammed and it is a very loud place. It was a sports night so there was lots of drunk yelling as people watched the tv. No one greated us as we entered the front door. No one gave us a menu so we grabbed one to see what they had. I will admit the menu looked interesting. We watched as several women dressed in tight fitting Chinese outfits walked by with people’s food. The best way to describe this place would be a Chinese Hooters, if it still existed. There were some girls working the entrance but they never gave us a table or let us know how long the wait time would be. After about 15 minutes of just standing there we just left.

Wandering around Jack London square, me and a few friends were looking for somewhere to watch the Warriors play off game. We went to a few spots, but to no surprise, everything had a line going out the door. I figured that it would be okay to wait until halftime when people were leaving but my friends were determined to sit and watch the game.
Eventually we ended up at Dragon Gate. My friend has been here before and I saw a few snapchats of the décor. Tbh it’s pretty interesting, it feels like a combination of modern sports bar with chinese vibes. Anyways we walked in and I was surprised that we were able to get a table for 5. Turns out it was in the corner and we couldn’t see anything so we asked if there was anything else available. The hostess then told us that we could rent out a room if we wanted. I believe it was $ 20/​hr and if we spent more than $ 100 on food/​drinks then the first hour would be comped. At this point, why not?
Funny enough, we were brought into a karaōke room, I didn’t even know these things had cable! We ate, we drank, we enjoyed the game and had a great time. Once in a while the owner, Johnny, would stop by to see how we were doing. He’s such a friendly guy and definitely knows how to take care of his guests. The only downside of the busy night was that the food took a while to come out because the kitchen was backed up.
Would I come again? Hell ya! Hopefully I’ll bump into some of the Warriors or even Steve Kerr if I get lucky.

Tried to call and make reservations for two but they said they don’t allow reservations for less then five people. While that’s fair, we went in and had a hard time finding seats at the bar because they had two sets of reserved seats for two people. Couldn’t get a table because they were all reserved or occupied. When a group of three people left early (from having a hard time getting their drinks), we couldn’t even take their table. Staff were running around and yelling at each other –one woman said «why aren’t any of you working?!» which made the setting uncomfortable.
They did let us stand at the bar and place orders. One of our food items was accidentally given away to someone else at the bar, which the bartender seemed apologetic for, but I think she added the new order to our tab after the fact –and after happy hour ended– then forced us to pay full price, even after my girlfriend tried to address this with her. This felt especially awkward because we previously heard the bartender ranting to one of the regulars about other customers who had accused of her incorrectly charging them. We had the calamari, popcorn chicken and fried corn. Food was alright — simple, deep fried, seasoned. However, the calamari wasn’t cleaned properly and still had the pen (?) in it.
Two other things I dislike: 1) that they insist on keeping the door open even though the smell of cigarettes floats through, and 2) it seemed like they filled the soap containers in the restroom with water instead of real soap.
They were good about refilling water cups, though.

We asked the lady to take our food back, due to the fact that it tasted NOTHING like it should. She said she would not be able to take it off our bill and would have to pay for it .

Greasy/​salty Chinese/​Taiwanese food (skewers too!) and beer? Amazing combination!
These bar hangouts are popping up left and right in Oakland. It is great to see a place serving savory Chinese food at night. Compliments cold beer amazingly well.
Food:
Popcorn chicken — Good flavor but it was not crunchy enough. Not sure if it is the batter or oil was not hot enough when they were frying. Tasted the powdery batter.
Beef skewer — Heavy on cumin. Very Chinese. Love it. Beef was dry tho.
Chicken skewer — Sweet teriyaki glaze on a salted chicken skewer. Above average.
Fries — Super salty. Crunchy. Nothing special.
Service:
Came here on a Friday. Wasn’t too busy. Service was okay. Nothing spectacular.
Environment:
I sure it is because I am getting old. It is loud in here. Way too loud. Lower the music down 2 noches so I can have a conversation in here please… there is no dance floor… no point in it being that loud.
Price:
Most items hover around $ 10. Price is decent. Pitchers I believe was $ 20+ dollars. Not bad I guess.

We have been wanting to try this place forever, today we had the chance. It was a perfect lunch, parking spaces available (usually hard to find), no wait for lunch…
When you first walk in, I think of one thing, beautiful Chinese setting… very nice and very comfortable…
We ordered stinky tofu, so good…
Taiwanese sausage, sweet taste… good
Pork n rice bowl, so so so good… best I have had around here…
Pork n noodles, called the Idiot noodle and if you don’t try this for 8 bucks, you are an idiot… just kidding… very very good…
My goodness, this place is great for bringing out of towners, prices are very reasonable… well worth it…
The one thing about this place, it takes awhile for each dish to come out, but if it’s all fresh made, well worth it…

I think what’s most refreshing about this place is that it’s an Asian option in Jack London. Otherwise the rest of Asian food is across the freeway in Oakland Chinatown. Dragon Gate serves Taiwanese food, such as stinky tofu, smelt fish (that’s grilled fried pregnant fish), beef noodle soup, and dan dan noodles. The food is good at best, and not something to write home about but definitely satisfying. I like that once you get in, it’s a completely different environment from Jack London. It’s dark inside with big booths, Chinese wood; and usually the game projected on the wall. The second floor has a private room, and an area that can be reserved for bottle service. I have yet to try karaōke out, but I’m definitely interested. The waitresses are dressed in silk Chinese-​collared dresses and are always ready for you.

Man seriously, fuck this place.
The first time I was here was a girls night. We decided to do karaōke room and the place reaped Ike smoke and the «music» system was all wanky and out of tune.
I returned enough to give it a chance but no.
Tonight was the last straw.
I sat at the bar and already felt alienated. Two taps were out and hey only had commercial beer. My food was cold, gross and contained mostly bones.
And don’t even let me tell you about the service.
I hoped to duplicate that first experience but it Never Came close.
Please go anywhere but here.
Two stars because of the one good night.

Which is often, because their food is consistently good, service is always impeccable, and they’re open till 2am. Maybe it’s due to my friend hilariously always referring to this place as Tokyo Drift. I dunno?

Ok so don’t get fooled by the location. It’s on the corner of Broadway as you head towards JLS. If you aren’t paying attention you will miss it. All parking is on the Street some days finding a spot can be hard. Once you find a spot you walk in from the side door. On your right is the bar and the left is the restaurant seating area and karaōke. They have TVs on the wall with sports playing. You will hear Cool music in the back ground to get you going. My first impression was wow this place is cool. Every time I visit the staff treats me great. Normally i would go for the awesome Happy Hour from 3−6pm. Don’t get me wrong the dinner here is also bomb. I’m usually trying to get more bang for my buck. But if you do the dinner or lunch the portions are set up family style so you do get a lot. Everything comes hot and ready just how I like. If you hear the doorbell that’s your food coming. The drinks are poured perfectly and will get you buzzed if you’re not paying attention. That reason alone keeps me coming back for more.

Stopped by for lunch for Oakland Restaurant Week. They stop taking orders for lunch at 2 pm so if you’re going to have a late lunch make sure you’re there by 2. We ordered the $ 20 pre-​fixe menu which included the soup of the day, popcorn chicken, Taiwanese pork sausages, and a bowl of their beef soup with thick noodles. We were seated and given hot damp towels and ice water. Shortly after we were given the soup of the day, something soy-​based and salty. I’m not much of a fan of these types of soups so I didn’t have much of it. The popcorn chicken and Taiwanese pork sausages were yummy. Good sized portions — enough to eat again at home later! The beef noodle soup was a HUGE bowl of various pieces of beef and noodles in a relatively oil-​heavy soup. I give this place 3 stars because I probably wouldn’t eat here again. More of a one-​time place to try out.

Not the right joint to bring your conservative Asian parents, but the vibe in here is great, the substantial food list is not only comprehensive but also pretty good! And don’t forget, those welcoming frosty pitchers of beer. Perfect for actual dinner or a late night snack after bar hopping.
Love the spicy wontons, eggplant dishes and sha-​cha noodles. Once we got a sha-​cha lamb stirfry and they subbed spinach for another green, which came out as a mountain of cooked spinach with a side of lamb – not what we were expecting, but A+ for effort.
Apparently they have karaōke too but I haven’t seen how you get a room.

WOW! The décor is a really cool looking here! LOVE IT!!!
We ordered the idiot noodles, which is basically Taiwanese minced pork over noodles and the popcorn chicken. With the first bite, you can tell the popcorn chicken is made of real white meat of the chicken!
We notice they add the tip onto the bill! So don’t over tip them!

This place is so cool. Coming here makes me feel like I’m cool, too. It will remind you of the Japanese restaurant in Kill Bill and you might look at the balcony above and expect to see people flying down and throwing martial arts implements at one another.
For the food — It is good!!! The soup. Just get a big bowl of incredibly tasty beef noodle soup. It is rich and satisfying. It will nourish your very bones. It has EXACTLY the right amount of spice. The beef simply melts in your mouth. The fresh ginger is sublime (but needs not to be in large pieces in our soup, ahem). But I now dream of this soup. On a chilly day, you might want to just curl up in it.
You can also get all kinds of yummy delectable little plates of food at happy hour — Taiwanese tapas! Can’t go wrong with the skewers. Lots of fun cocktails. Big tv (yawn), awesome crazy nightclub décor. Beautiful big wooden tables and comfy booths.

Interesting addition to the neighborhood that’s a huge step up from the establishment that used to be at this location. That having been said, despite the swanky décor here, there’s just something about the vibe here that seems a bit off.
Downstairs is a beautiful lounge done up in a way that suggests a stereotypically exotic Asian cocktail lounge that you’d expect to see in a James Bond movie. Indeed, there’s a large screen showing Chinese kung fu movies. Upstairs are private karaōke rooms.
Drinks are OK, if a bit diluted, and the food is OK, although a bit pricey given that some offerings are clearly of the frozen supermarket variety. Service can be a bit slow and absent-​minded, regardless of who your server is.
Overall, I want to like this place more, given the beautiful effort they’ve put into it, but I just can’t personally warm up to it.

My review is solely for their Happy Hour. From 2−6p Mon-​Friday you can sit in this beautiful restaurant and enjoy 5 $ fried entrees, 2 $ off draft and bottled beers and $ 1 off cocktails. I have yet to enjoy their cocktails but they have a full bar and the drinks look as good as their descriptions.
Usually I order Chicken Katsu, Calamari and the Wings. Nice Bar bites and large portions for 5 bucks. To wash it down beer of course. Their selection is pretty diverse from Fat Tire to Sapporo. Everything is always served piping hot out the fryer and the wait isn’t too long.
The service during happy hour is pretty lack luster seems like it’s a working break for the servers before dinner service. That’s okay because I’m usually there to drink and converse with my happy hour companion.
All in all the seating is comfortable and the price is right. Check me out. I hear the dinner is pretty good too.

Party of 12 on a Wednesday night and we basically had the place to ourselves!
Place reminded some friends of a Kill Bill scene with anticipation of Crazy 88 coming down the stairs… cool décor, loungy and a little loud with music blaring… it would still be okay if they turned down the volume a couple of notches so we didn’t have to yell across the table.
No problem with service… staff was very accommodating… we were first seated upstairs which had 2 booths (seats about 4 – 5) with couches in the area… cool for a standing only get together but not great for a group dining experience. Staff was nice to arrange the tables downstairs so we could dine more comfortably and as a group.
Food was delicious… for the newbies, i would recommend the following items (not too ethnic):
* Popcorn chicken with basil
* Calamari with basil
* Pork cutlet
* Fried rice with lamb or beef
* Idiot Noodle with ground pork, cucumber, pickled vegetables
* Asparagus dish
Unfortunately, they didn’t have the garlic noodles available which seemed odd but oh well… still we had a good sampling.
The minor issue we had was staff not asking if we wanted another drink. Fortunately, this group arent big drinkers but i can see other parties not being too happy… this is just good service and money for the restaurant.
Overall, we had a great experience and would highly recommend this place. Happy hour pricing until 6 p.m.
