Donut Savant

Cronut mini size was definitely good. One of my bookmarks here in Oakland so I had to try this place… My hubby had to stay in car so I can run down and get some of these yummy goodness. I love that they have mini sizes, especially good if you want to try different flavors. I really like it and definitely a good cronut from the others that I had.

Donuts are AMAZING and small and cheap so you can sample several! Latte was mediocre though so I have to only give 4 stars because of that.

We finally made it here! Since they are closed on Sunday and Monday it’s been a challenge to get here to try their donuts! After seeing this place on the food channel my husband and I were excited to give this place a try. We ordered 5 mini dounuts, 3 cronettes, 1 apple fritter, and 1 bar. We also tried the salted caramel mocha, hot and iced. We really enjoyed what we ordered. The donuts here are definitley not like your average neighborhood donut shop. Next time we’re craving donuts we’ll be back!

I love donuts and this place did not disappoint! They know what they are doing and it was worth the drive. Their donuts are more dense than your traditional donut, but oh so good! Pricing is decent too, cheaper than I expected. I also like that they offer mini donuts — it’s nice to get a little bite of different flavors. Get there early, as they tend to run out of flavors.

Very cute donuts and cronuts here, although they are very miniature sized. I uploaded a picture of their mini cronut compared to my hand to give you guys a feel of how big they are. (I think that my hands are quite small soooo yea hahah)
I got the baker’s assortment because I didn’t know what to get and I’m glad I did because it really was an assortment and wasn’t just 3 types of one donut. Their donut textures are dense like an old fashioned donut, so if you like the regular fluffy donut this may be a bit dense for you. My sister prefers the regular donuts and thought that they were too dense but I love old fashioned donuts so they were perfect for me! I am a fan of these donuts.

Nothing beats old-​school, old-​fashioned donuts! The chocolate and vanilla donut holes are AH-​MAZING!
Best chocolate glaze I’ve ever had and the vanilla is very flavorful and tastes like real vanilla bean. The chocolate covered cron’t and jam-​filled sufganiyot were outstanding, as was the simple chocolate frosted hole.

I’m so stoked I finally got to try this place! After seeing pictures of the square cronuts, I’ve been lusting after them *_​_​*
They were way more reasonably priced than I thought they’d be! I feel like when you see aesthetically pleasing food like this, it’s always overpriced. But, these cronuts were only $ 2 each! They also had mini cronuts for $ 1 each — so cute.
My boyfriend and I shared a chocolate and a salted maple cronut, as well as a mini vanilla glazed cronut. The chocolate tasted just like a chocolate croissant, and was chocolatey and sweet and had me licking my fingers quite often LOL. The vanilla one was pretty good, but I found it to be much too sweet, so I’m glad we just got the mini one of that.
Our favorite was definitely the salted maple cronut! It wasn’t too sweet, and the glaze wasn’t as thick as the chocolate or vanilla ones. It was flakier and just overall perfect!
I should also mention that the texture was not what I had expected. I imagined light, flaky, and almost crispy pastries, but these were actually pretty heavy!
They were delicious and reasonably priced, but I don’t think I would go out of my way to come back here. We drove from North Berkeley to try these, and we were in and out within 10 min. If I was in the area however, I would definitely drop by again.

I have tried donuts from the east coast to the west coast and there are some clear winners and Donut Savant is one of them. Some donuts are known for their size, their fluffiness, creativity and general ambiance. I love Donut Savant for its smaller size and attention to details when it comes to texture of the donut, flavor and sweetness. They cover it all. If you don’t want to have a cardiac arrest eating a ginormous donut, this is a good place to sample different ones without feeling completely guilty.
I could sleep in them :)

Always a treat to visit here. Have a memorable picture to look forward to the next visit. Boston cream (chocotey, beware the cream literally squished out) and the Nutella (right in the middle) are the winners this time.

I’m honestly so mad that I found about this place. I ate one. and then another. and then another.
I love that they have different sizes. You don’t have to feel THAT guilty. You ate three cronuts? But the mini ones? Then did you really eat three cronuts? No… Obviously not.
Parking was bit of a hassle but it usually is in Oakland. I went around 10 am on a weekday and did not wait long at all. It’s more spacious than most donut shops and it has a modern feel to it. I The employees are nice and really seem to enjoy working there. I got a box full of yummy goodness. The other donuts definitely fall short after you eat the cronuts. Next time I’m only getting the cronuts!!! My favorite is the maple one but the vanilla is good too. They are SWEET but will be a perfect pair with some black coffee.
Will be back the next time I want to treat myself!

I LOVE donuts. I discovered Donut Savant on Thrillist’s article on the 33 best donut shops in America. So I just had to go! I originally had an idea about what I wanted to get but once I entered the store, I just wanted them all! …so that’s what I got ;D
Staff was super friendly and helpful. Place was ok, nothing special, but definitely different than others with a modern vibe, clean as well.
I really liked how there were different sizes of each donut, which can be explained better on their website, and can be seen in the pictures I took. My favorites had to be the chocolate glazed donuts — best chocolate glazed I’ve ever had! Boston cream pie was delicious too. I didn’t get to try the «hella Nutella» and sufganiyot bc they didn’t have any, so I was a little sad about that. But it also gives me another reason to go back!
Other than that, if you check out their website, they also let you order ahead and pick it up at a time that is better for you.
I will be back!

The itty bitty donuts of Donut Savant caught my eye when I was looking for a fantastic good-​bye gift to my former co-​workers and saw that a number of my Unilocal friends had positive things to say about here! Rather than trying to go through and guess what people would like, I picked up two Bakers Dozen boxes and threw in four Cron’ts for good measure. I had the Maple Pecan Hole, a smidge of the Cinnamon Sugar Cron’t, and a small portion of the Chocolate Dust Hole. All in all, these were great to bring in for the group since people tend to show their commitment issues when the large and in charge donuts are an option. I still love the larger donuts from some of the places in and around SF, but these were great and would be perfect for a group party!

Cron’ts. Incredible. Just absolutely sweet and sugary and creamy and fabulous.
Interior of this place is kind of lacking, but trust me, they make up for it in donuts. I ordered online the night before, and I highly recommend it for those who have big office orders on Friday morning. These donuts were absolutely yummy, and cheaper than other specialty donuts I’ve tried in the bay.
My only regret: the coffee. Their cappuccino was truly appalling. No regrets though I’ll definitely be back for my fair share of diabetes.

Their Hella Nutella is true to the name and absolutely satisfies every taste buds of mine that had a craving for smooth, delicious smothered chunk of nutella on a superbly composed puff pastry.
In other news, I’ve also been indulging in their coffee — wonderful cap with cronut in the winter @ a really decent price; and today had the pleasure of trying out their cold brew (expresso machine temporarily out of order) — also wonderful with minimal acidity.

Okay, so I’m updating my review by one extra star. Why you ask? The Cron’t. I got the cinnamon sugar, and while still on the small side, it was divine. So if I come back, I’m getting a Cron’t for sure.

The best doughnuts I’ve had in the east bay. The doughnut holes were the perfect size, and there were great flavors to choose from. So good!

I want to have more and recommend this place to anyone who loves sweets and/​or donuts or food. You will love them!

I always stay away from donuts because they’re not worth the feeling of guilt that ensues after consumption… but the donuts here are worth it. The size of the donuts are smaller than traditional donuts so it’s all good. (That’s my inner-​voice-​justification-​pep-​talk I had with myself as I ordered 6 donuts for myself.)
There are a few types of donuts served here:
1) cake based (think dense like old fashioned donuts)
2) raised dough (think of the fluffy raised donuts that are chewy)
3) cron’ts (cross between croissant & fluffy donuts)
I had the following:
1) chocolate frosted hole
2) coconut dream hole
3) salted maple cron’t — get this!
4) SOS — raised donut with seasonal jam — get this!
5) apple fritter — get this!
6) Boston cream pie — get this!
7) latte
Overall, I preferred the raised donuts to the donut holes as they offered a chewy, soft, fluffy texture. My favorites were the apple fritter and Boston cream pie — they just came out of the oven and were warm… OMG! The texture was perfect and the balance of sweetness was on point. The dark chocolate on the Boston cream pie was such a good compliment to the cream inside! The apples in the fritter were fresh and the glaze wasn’t overpoweringly sweet. Paired with the latte, it was an AWESOME way to start my Saturday… and great motivation to go work out!
Tip: you can order ahead online and pick them up the next morning. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Honestly the donuts look good in pictures but sort of average when you see them in person. But then you take a bite into one (any one of them) and they are freaking amazing.
I tried the Chocolate Cron’t, Apple Fritter, and Maple Pecan (the tiny one). All 3 were my favorites. They all tasted so different from each other but were the best versions of anything similar I’ve tasted.
The Chocolate Cron’t tasted less sweet than the famous DA Cronut and the texture was less flakey but still layered with a slightly more smooth and chewy bite. You have to try it to know what I’m talking about!
The Apple Fritter was ¹⁄₅ the size of a mom and pop shop apple fritter but tasted twice as good. The Maple Pecan was basically a donut hole topped with maple and crushed pecans. Why didn’t anyone else think of topping a donut hole before?
I’m digging the laid back, hip hoppy vibe of this place.

I finally made it across the bay to check out Donut Savant. I liked the space — open and bright, but still kind of industrial. The display cases were gorgeous, as were the doughnuts themselves. Luckily, they’re on the smaller side so I could eat more without being as wasteful.
I bought a small collection of five doughnuts and started with the sea salt maple pecan (or something like that). Great doughnut, great flavor. But as I went through the rest of the doughnuts, I realized that ALL the glazes were salty. I get that some salt may be required or a nice balance but a regular doughnut (like their cronut or the cinnamon roll) should NOT have a salty glaze, in my opinion. It took away from what should have been an amazing doughnut experience. I couldn’t finish my samples because of how salty everything was. Other than that, it would have been five stars.
