We provide comprehensive dental care for your whole family. Our wonderful staff is trained to welcome you into our practice with a thorough initial exam and then to coordinate your treatment to completion. Our hygienists help you maintain optimum health with regular preventive visits and customized education to help you take the best care of yourself possible. Through this whole process we will work with your insurance company to maximize their benefit to you.

In addition we have excellent relationships with the specialists in our community and in the event you need care beyond the scope of our office we will utilize their help to obtain the best care for you.

We believe in the importance of communication and want you to feel informed about every aspect of your oral health.

History

Established in 1954.

Our practice has had two owners since 1954 and we have been consistently committed to offering excellent, comfortable and ethical oral health care since the beginning. Dr. Harold Nielsen grew up in Oakland and after serving in WWII built the office we still occupy on Park Boulevard in the Glenview district of Oakland. Dr Lewis joined Dr. Nielsen in the 80’s and they worked together until 1990. Now Dr. Lewis is the dentist/​owner of the practice. He wants to carry on the tradition of excellence first created by Dr. Nielsen over 50 years ago.

I spent all but a short part of my youth in Arizona and went to the University of Arizona in Tucson. I studied biology and had a strong interest in the healing professions. My family dentist invested time in me and I came to believe that I would enjoy a career in dentistry and that I had the necessary skills. I came to San Francisco to attend dental school at the University of the Pacific. I fell in love with the Bay Area and decided to do a General Practice Residency at Highland Hospital in Oakland. I was introduced to Dr. Nielsen by my mentors at Highland and became his associate after graduating from that program. We worked together for several years before his retirement and I became the owner of his business. In the years that have followed I have continued to enjoy the practice of dentistry and the people we serve. Our current team is made up of a committed group of professionals that I have had the pleasure to work with for over a decade. We love what we do!

Bizarre as it may seem, I am looking forward to my dental visit this month. Our family has gone to Dr. Lewis for over twenty years, and we’ve had nothing but good experiences. Our children have grown up with Dr. Lewis. We’ve had prophylaxis, crowns, and small oral surgeries, and all have been affordable, well explained, and well performed. I recommend Dr. Lewis (and his talented staff!) for his easy-​going, knowledgeable, and direct manner.

I wonder who was the lady hygienist that put the tools on your chest. MMMMMM
Maybe your chest needed cleaning also, I just had my teeth cleaned and the lady did FIRST class work, she was gentle, very good in making the lower teeth look white again without whiteners and I loved the way Dr Lewis treats me, with respect and looks at my eyes while explaining the situation.
In the new industry of dentistry Dr Lewis is one of the few that still has professionalism and consideration for your pocket book.

I was referred to Dr. Lewis by a friend and am very grateful for the recommendation. When I called to schedule my appointment I informed them that it was my first time and that I was paying out of pocket. She woman I spoke too suggested I get my x-​rays from my previous dentist if i had been within a certain amount of years so they wouldn’t have to charge me for a whole other set of x-​rays. I was able to do so. Also, the office is typically booked out for months in advance however she found a cancellation and squeezed me in early the same week. When I arrived as the first patient trying to lock my bike up outside, I encountered the dentist coming in and he insisted that I bring my bike into the waiting room. That level of genuine consideration carried over into my experience as his patient, Dr. Lewis thoroughly examined and thoughtfully explained the condition, preservation and future of my teeth in an engaging and fun manner. Best dental experience to date!

We were referred to Dr. Lewis by our orthodontist several years ago. Since then each family member has seen him and his staff many times. Dr. Lewis is just a nice guy, plain and simple. He just happens to be a great dentist. That’s the feeling you get when you meet him.
It can be difficult to get an appointment, but given the level of care and attention which is provided to each patient this is understandable.
I have noticed patients of all ages in his office, from children to seniors. My children have had extractions done at this office and other members of my family have had bridge work and other complicated procedures performed. No complaints from anyone.
There have been hiccups with the insurance billing, but only with the complicated work or when our insurance has changed. The staff resubmitted the information and the bills were paid.

I have been seeing Dr. Lewis for over 2 years now and I really like him and his whole office. He is gentle and kind and has a way of putting me at ease. I’ve met 2 of the hygienists and I like them both and they do a great job. The front desk staff is friendly and warm. Since I’ve been going there the whole experience of going to the dentist is actually a pleasant one– I’ve never felt this way before, it’s always been anxiety-​provoking in the past. There is always free street parking too. I can’t recommend him highly enough!

I went because I could walk to him, and he had the recommendation of three people I knew. I guess we must have different sensibilities and different situations, because no one seemed to have the problems I had.
After over five visits: telling me to use sensitive toothpaste, and then «oh, you do have a problem,» giving me a filling, and multiple times of telling me «pulpitius» that will go away, I finally got a root canal that fixed the problem I came in for originally. But that wasn’t the end of the visits: then I had to go multiple times to get the crown seated properly. No «oops, our bad, we’ll take those extra visits off the tab» when it came to payment either.
The staff doesn’t know how to deal with two insurances. Unless they were going to get paid, they weren’t willing to bill the second insurance so that my yearly deductible and out-​of-​pocket were applied. Charged me a monthly «billing» fee while I tried to convince them to bill my second insurance. Despite that they hadn’t completed this submission, and that I was contacting them to fix the bill, they didn’t take back those fees when they finally did bill my secondary. Then, before I paid, they put me into collections without notification. Eventually, I just had my bank send them the check — including the extra fees — so I could be rid of this dentist, and be out of collections.
Not only was it a miserable, time consuming, and physically painful experience … I left feeling cheated. I don’t feel hokey saying that this dentist left bad taste in my mouth.

I visited Dr. Lewis yesterday because my dentist is out of town until next week. I had a pretty bad toothache and didn’t think it could wait. I called at 9:00 AM; they got me in at 1:15. The staff were all great. I had an x-​ray and it turns out that I’ll need a root canal.
Dr. Lewis was thorough: told me there were two different ways this root canal could be approached and that my regular dentist should decide that based on my history. Meanwhile, he wrote out a prescription for antibiotics to hold the infection at bay and also gave me some advice on OTC pain relief.
All in all, the very positive experience, considering the situation. Also nice to know that my dentist has a great office to count on when he’s out of town.

I really have to give Dr. Lewis and his staff 5 stars. I’ve been going to him for years now. He had been encouraging me to replace a failing post and crown that another dentist did many years ago with a dental implant for the last couple of years. I dragged my feet, but finally had the implant done early this year by an excellent oral surgeon he recommended. I appreciated how Dr. Lewis coordinated my care with the oral surgeon and, most of all, the great customized crown he placed on the implant. It looks so good people keep asking me which tooth I had done and who did the work. Now let’s all go floss!

Daniel Lewis is an ethical, genuinely kind and caring doctor. I’ve been a patient at this practice since before he took it over upon retirement of the previous doctor (Neilsen). I have nothing but praise for Dr. Lewis; nothing hurts with him, be it injections and fillings, he is gentle. And his hygenists are top notch too!
Not sure what’s up with reviewer Katrina H. below, too much drama for a cleaning visit.

I find the office to be very convenient for me, as it is mere blocks from where I work. The staff know me and though they may not be effusive, they are courteous. I personally don’t like all the chit chat and prefer to get in and out, so this style works for me.
Daniel Lewis is kind, patient and takes the time to explain everything. He doesn’t push you to get work done and the staff never shames you if you… oh… forget to floss your teeth… just a kind reminder.
I’d definitely recommend this office.

I have been a patient of Dr Lewis for over 20 years. Unfortunately, I have way more than my share of dental problems. Dr Lewis and his staff provide excellent care. He explains problems, clearly describes options, and supports whatever treatment decision I make. Dr Lewis has made a significant contribution to my quality of life.

I saw Dr. Lewis three times in 2006 – 2007 all for cleanings. My first two experiences were good. Dr. Lewis had a full entry exam with me which really taught me a lot and impressed me with his thoroughness. Dr. Lewis is a very nice and thorough dentist and does not mind explaining what he is doing.
Cons:
I didn’t feel there was a lot of insurance support. I was surprised with some of my bills though that could also be my own fault in not understanding my insurance structure.
I do not like having to book my next appointment six months out when I leave my last one.
My main problem was the last time I went, I had an not so great experience with a dental hygienist who was brusque, seemed irritated by my questions, and couldn’t be bothered to juggle instruments. Instead she rested them on my chest when they weren’t in use which I found a bit unnerving. I asked if Dr. Lewis was going to check in with me at the end of the appointment, mostly because I didn’t trust this hygienist, and she asked why I felt like I needed to see him, was there a problem? I had just assumed he would check in at every appointment. I didn’t want to tell her that I was uncomfortable with her work so I left without seeing Dr. Lewis and with an uncomfortable feeling.
I know it was probably on me to insist that I see the dentist and, if I saw him, I am pretty confident that he would have put my mind at ease because he really does seem like a very good dentist. I just didn’t feel like I should have jump through hoops to get some face time with the dentist.

It’s great to find a dentist that does good reliable work without trying to sell you some expensive work that your insurance doesn’t cover. Dr. Lewis always makes time to explain things the way I can understand what my options are. The staff is friendly and helpful. My only problem is that the practice is so popular, I can’t get in quickly if I have to cancel a cleaning appointment.
