Description

Specialties

As the Bay Area’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers («Bigs») and children («Littles»), ages 6 through 18, in San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa Counties. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

History

Established in 1958.

Big Brothers was founded in New York City in 1904 by Court Clerk Ernest Coulter. Appalled by the suffering and misery of the thousands of children who came through his courtroom, he appealed to civic and business leaders to take on the role of a «Big Brother». By 1916, BBBS had spread to 96 cities across the country. Today there are more than 450 Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies operating in all 50 states … and in 12 countries around the world.
