Apple Stoves

I was thrilled, at first, to discover a local company that specializes in refurbishing vintage stoves. We needed someone to make a house call to give our new Wedgewood apartment stove a once-​over. The answering service was courteous, and we scheduled our house call for September 1. The technician was friendly and punctual, and seemed to know what he was doing. He spent just under an hour doing a general tune-​up and leak check. We paid about $ 400.
We had requested that our burners be adjusted, as they seemed to be set on maximum gas and air flow, but when the technician left, we noticed he had not made an adjustment, even though we discussed it. No worries, we were glad that he lubed the knobs, educated us about some best practices, and let us know our stove was in good condition overall.
Fast forward a few weeks, after we had been smelling gas in our house intermittently (and leaving the windows open as a safety measure until we had time to investigate the location of the leak.) I eventually called Apple back to express our concern. They let us know that a return house call within 30 days, for any outstanding issues, was covered by the original amount we paid.
The scheduler had told me that the technician would come the next Wednesday. However, on Saturday, we received a call from the tech asking if he could come a few minutes early. When he showed up, I asked him about the schedule change and he admitted that the communication with scheduling was not very reliable.
He ended up doing another leak check and finding nothing. He gave me a bill, but I explained that I was told there would be no fee. We were not charged. He said if we smelled gas again, to call PG&E.
Fast forward a few more weeks to the day I called PG&E for a very strong smell of gas in the house. The PG&E engineer came within the hour. He spent almost 2 hours explaining his instrumentation and processes, so we felt confident that he was competent. He tested all the lines between the meter and the house, and found that all lines were tight and leak-​free. He did, however, detect a leak in our stove. He scoffed when we told him that Apple had deferred responsibility, and suggested we find another service company for our stove.
(To be accurate, the strong smell of gas did not originate from the stove, but when PG&E repaired the dryer fittings that were leaking, he waited 30 minutes to air out the house, and then definitively located a leak inside our stove).
While we feel we did not receive the service we paid for, we will not be using Apple in the future. Their customer service was friendly, but we do not feel confident in their ability to deliver the services they promise.

I appreciate the work that Laura and Gregg provided with my stove. Gregg came to my home in mid-​June to remove the chrome pieces and burner elements and burner tops. Laura sent my burner tops to an outside vender to have the porcelain refinished. They told me it would take 4 – 6 weeks to have them re-​finished, but it only took 5 weeks. They came back perfect. It’s a lengthy process but worth it in the end. Thank you to Gregg and Laura who made my Wedgewood Stove look beautiful!

Just a quick update — I did have a very slight leak in one of the lines that feed the burners… I called Apple Stove and they came over very quickly to fix the problem. It took about 10 minutes to find and fix… and I am again a happy chef.

I haven’t actually yet bought anything from Apple Stoves (but I’m going to). But I can attest to their personal, quick and honest attention to their business. I mistakenly ordered a part using PayPal. When I discovered this (my error) I contacted Apple Stoves, Laura in particular. She was most gracious and helpful, and refunded the payment immediately. I am most impressed – she didn’t have to do that, since it was my own fault. Big thanks and two thumbs up!

Wow. I am so happy with the refurbished stove I just got from Apple Stoves. It took some time to get it refurbished, but well worth the wait. It is beautiful and I highly recommend anyone looking for a stove that will last a lifetime or more to go to Apple. Hauling it up my to my 3^rd floor Victorian and taking away the old one was a Herculean task, but they did it with humor and clearly, they love what they are doing. Forget stoves with computer panels… these old ones are made to work forever.

My wonderful and extremely vintage O’Keefe & Merritt trash burning gas stove was getting crochety. Then it stopped wokring altogether. Apple had fixed it in years back so I was a bit nervous when their phone was disconnected. However they were on line and sent a fellow over immediately. He made it work in time for a cooking class I was hosting plus it now works beter than ever. Another good sign; he was a younger fellow who had appreticed with them for several years. So they are nurturing talent and will help those of us with antique cookstoves keep cooking for a long time.

Excellent service! Have had our Wedgewood stove serviced a couple of times over the last 15 years and Greg is by far the best ever. Arrived on time — got right to work — and solved our problems efficiently. He offered lots of great (do-​it-​yourself) advise on maintenance and did lots of extra «tweaks» during the one hour service call. Worth every penny and our definitely «go to» repairman in the future.

I should have read the filtered reviews first. The following is my complaint filed with the BBB. Apple Stoves has an F rating.
Apple Stoves was contacted because I smelled gas in our kitchen coming from our vintage Wedgewood Stove. I suspected a leak in the flex hose — which I told service person upon arrival on January 28^th. Service person used a tester to check the hose and said that there was no leak. I was shown the tester and that it did not register a leak. Service person proceeded to test around the stove knobs and said that they needed cleaning/​oiling. My initial bill for this ‘repair’ was $ 130. The first hour was billed at $ 90/​hour which is $ 1.50/minute. Service person proceeded to take multiple phone calls while billing me at this rate. A gas leak odor was still evident after this appointment. The oven worked one time after the Apple Stove service, then the pilot light went out and could not be re-​lighted. On February 1 the Apple Stoves service person returned and cleaned the valves for the oven. When I tried to open the oven door after this visit, it was torqued out of alignment and the handle to the door was loose. I paid $ 90 for this second appointment. A gas leak odor remained after this appointment. On February 9^th PG&E made an emergency service call. They immediately pinpointed the leak in the flex hose and used the soap/​water test to verify, and to show me where it was located in the line. The PG&E service person told me that there is always a very small gas emission around the valves on these old stoves and that it is not hazardous. I purchased a new flex hose which had to be installed and the pilots re-​lighted. I paid a contractor working at the house to do this. On February 14^th the Apple Stoves service person was to come between 11:00 and 11:30 to tighten the oven door handle. At 11:45 they had not arrived. I called; they needed to re-​schedule. A second appointment was made for the evening of the same day (February 14^th) at 5:30. At 6:15 I called — service person had forgotten the appointment. At this point I never wanted Apple Stoves to do anything at my home again. On February 18^th PG&E returned to check the new flex hose and pilots. The hazard tag was be removed. Our home had a dangerous gas leak which Apple Stoves, equipped with a gas detector, insisted did not exist. Isn’t there a requirement that service people dealing with gas stoves have working leak detectors and be supervised by a licensing agency? I wrote to Apple Stoves, detailing my complaint, several times with no response. Finally I received a letter at the end of June, stating that they needed two weeks to review my complaints. It is now the end of August, two months later and I have heard nothing back from them.

The guy they sent out worked incredibly slowly and turned a minor stove top tune up into a major expense (all the while talking and talking about space aliens among other things). I could have just bought a new stove for what this ended up costing. I feel like I was cheated.
After all that frustration and expense, within a few months the oven ceased to work, but Apple was not willing to make any effort to set things right. They were only wiling to send a different person (at our expense).
I called Apple partly based on positive Unilocal reviews. Don’t make the same mistake.

I am a «Customer For Life». Greg has been to our home twice over the last 8 years to adjust and repair our 1940’s Wedgewood Stove. Last time was to repair an oven door spring that just wore out. Greg and an associate of his came to our home, replaced the spring, and gave the stove and oven a general tune up, for a very reasonable price. Not only does Greg know what he is doing, charges a fair price, but his customer service sets the Bench Mark for all repair companies. At this service Greg was going to arrive late and called us well in advance to say that his appointment before us was going to take longer than planned, and would it still WORK FOR US for him to arrive later than scheduled. When has a repair company called at all or well in advance of a schedule appointment to forewarn you about an arrival delay and see if it will still work for YOU. Knowledgeable repair service, fair price, honesty and very customer service oriented, that is why we are a «Customer For Life» with Apple Stoves.

Ron was prompt, courteous, knowledgeable (he knew what the problem was immediately), and affordable. The first guy that came (from another company) had no idea what was wrong with my oven. I HIGHLY recommend these guys.

I’m telling you Laura at Apple Stoves is top-​notch. She was incredibly helpful and full of wisdom when we were looking for a stove. She even told us what to look for as we were looking at OTHER places for stoves. «Oil and crud are good, RUST is BAD!» Thanks so much Laura!
Due to her advice, we eventually decided to purchase a stove here. They have a WIDE selection on the floor that you can peruse, much bigger of a selection than some of the other fancy pants shops we’d visited.
We are so happy to support a local-​yokel business that is helping to keep the antique market alive! Also, these suckers are real antiques, as in they appreciate in value over the years! woo hoo.

I bought my «new» old stove here after my stove died and could not be repaired. I did a lot of research and I’m so glad I went with Apple Stoves! This is the kind of business I want to support: small and family run. GREAT service! I bought a stove and really wanted a color. Laura helped me pick the perfect color of green and made sure the stove was refurbished and done right. (Look for my stove on the website. Stove porn!) After installation and through the years I’ve had some stove adjustments. Gregg comes out, fixes my stove and brings a smile. My BEAUTIFUL green stove gets complements every time I have a visitor and I always recommend Apple Stoves.

We’ve had a great experience having Apple Stoves fix an O’Keefe and Merritt stove that we found on Craigslist. The stove has been working with no issues for almost a year. The owners are very friendly and knowledgeable. We are planning on buying a small stove from Apple Stoves in the near future.

I called Apple Stoves because of gas leaks and my 1950’s oven wouldn’t work. I am impressed by several things:
–Gregg is a solid nice guy. He did things like give free advice on how my husband could fix the stove himself and save us money.
–If my stove was un-​fixable, I could take the cost of the labor and put it on a stove in their store.
–He was willing to drive 30 miles out to my place.
–He found my gas leak.
I would’ve liked to give five stars, except for one thing:
–He didn’t technically fix my oven.
(To Gregg’s defense, he didn’t charge me for the four full hours he was at my house.)
God forbid that my stove breaks again, I will call Gregg. I’m really happy with our overall experience!
