A Chinatown Optometrist

Great eye doc who gives a very thorough examination. Plus he’s nice and cool. The assistant that helped me pick out glasses was super helpful and nice also. Love this place. Parking, well that’s a struggle, but this office is worth it.

I am very, very happy with this office! Annie, at the front desk, is AMAZINGLY helpful, and Dr Hoh is really interested in your long term eye health! I have a tricky prescription and they’ve been so kind and generous with helping me out! Thank you so much!

My boyfriend and his family have been going to this place for a while and they really like them so I decided to give it a try. Annie was soo so so so so nice and helpful! She makes you feel very welcome which is an absolute plus. I went in for a new pair of glasses Saturday evening and all I had to do was give her a copy of my prescription and picked out my frames. The overall process was quick and I got my new glasses within a few days. :))

My husband goes to Dr. David Hoh and today I went for my first appointment. I was very impressed with how THOROUGH of an eye exam I received. Dr. Hoh used many pieces of electronic equipment to test my eyes. After a battery of tests, Dr. Hoh reconfirmed the electronic data by testing again using individual prescription lens he put into a «glasses like» viewer. He had a huge tray of these prescription lens. He said the distance the lens is from your eye can make a difference so by trying on this recently determined prescription up close in these frames, he can double confirm the prescription for optimal vision. Dr. Hoh has a nice sense of humor and is very professional. Both of his assistants were helpful and friendly. The office is right in the heart of Chinatown and very comfortable. Another big plus, is the exam was the most reasonably priced I have found in the area.

I have been a patient of David Hoh’s for over 10 years. David is hands down one of the best Optometrists I have worked with. He is a great listener and is able to provide the proper diagnosis and options for my vision.

Reception lady… Almost on par with the chubby lady in my dental review (CT Dental). This lady, boy… She responds so quickly. Good, right? Nope. Her responses make you feel retarded. It makes you feel like beating her up. She called a patient to tell them that it was their appointment date. The patient asks if she could go today. Reception – «I just told you that you could come in today. I wouldn’t call you if it wasn’t your appointment, blah blah. You get it. Basically she gets gets the last word, and you feel like shit. If you want to ruin your morning, go here. If you want to get a pair of glasses, it’s the best place to go. Just be prepared to get burned by this lady. Why the one star even though the optometrist here is high-​tier? It’s from the reception, –minus four stars from her attitude. You know why? She was talking to my mom in that manner. Never do that. If you can hold in your emotions and let it slide, then come here. Otherwise, stay away.

I have been going to Dr. David Hoh for over 20 years! Thats how long I have been blessed to have the best Optometrist in the area. He shows great compassion for not just your vision but your overall health. I don’t know how to thank him and his staff enough for giving me such a great experience. A year ago, I accidentally broke my glasses and drove to this office freaking out. After showing them what happen, they took time out of their day and appointments to fix my glasses and made them good as new. If you want the best of the best, its here!

I have been to several optometrists but no one has explained things to me so well. I went in for my routine eye exam. Dr Hoh was thorough, patient and extremely knowledgeable. I decided that I wanted to also get fitted for contacts (yes I see the world differently now!), Dr Hoh made time for me that very appointment so I didn’t have to make another visit. The lady who did the reservation was also very good. She literally drew out a chart explaining exactly how much I would be looking to pay with my VSP insurance. They make it such that your out of pocket is minimum! I’m not going to another optometrist until I’m alive ;)

I have been wearing glasses for almost 25 years and never have I ever had a better experience with an optometrist than with Dr. Hoh in Oakland, CA.
This recommendation is based on my recent examination for contact lenses, which was the most thorough I’ve ever had in my life! He performed nearly double the amount of tests that I usually expect from a routine visit and does a really good job explaining what’s going on with your eye health. When it was time to explore my options for my lenses (and I had several because of my astigmatism), he was very patient to ensure I had the right fit for comfort, clarity of vision, and pricing.

Dr. Hoh is a gem. The reception is very personable, accommodating and informative. I think one of the two women hasn’t really mastered English, which sometimes may get lost in translation as rude. I get it because some of my relatives sound «not so sweet» with their «Engrish», but in actually really are nice people: P. The woman who helped me was awesome. Anyway… If you want to have a doctor that is patient, communicates the exam steps, someone who is willing to answer all questions with genuine concern, and someone who is thorough and extremely skilled, Dr. Hoh is the man. The best optometrist I’ve encountered in my 18 years of «non ²⁰⁄₂₀ vision». With my new prescription I can see ²⁰⁄₁₅ :).

Dr. Hoh was the first optometrist I went to. I got my first pair of glasses ever from his office in 2003. Over the years I went to other optometrists because of my parents then I moved away for college. This year I moved back to Oakland so I had to find a local optometrist. I searched on Unilocal and decided to go back to Dr. Hoh. He is definitely the best optometrist out of all I’ve been to, I should have stuck with him! I really appreciate how Dr. Hoh explains everything he is doing and he takes his time answering questions I have.
The staff are really nice and helpful. I particularly like the lady who wears glasses and has the longer hair, she gives good frame suggestions.
Prices are standard. The turnover time is ok. I’ve had glasses ready within a few days and another took over 2 weeks.
One thing I wish they have is a larger selection of frames. Each time I’ve had a difficult time finding frames I like that are within a reasonable price.

HANDS DOWN, BEST OPTOMETRIST I’VE MET!
I have been coming to see Dr. Hoh for more than 10 years?! I have lots of family here in the bay area but I actually live in Los Angeles. I’ve been to a few in LA and man, they do not compare to Dr. Hoh at all! So whenever I travel to the Bay Area I make it a point to see Dr. Hoh to get my eyes checked! Dr. Hoh is really attentive when it comes to my eyes and informs me everything he’s going to do so I don’t freak out if something weird comes up. He’s also super patient, friendly and he takes the time to explain everything to me.
The staff is super nice too! I don’t see why everyone complains about the staff. Whenever I walk in, they smile at me and ask if I need any help each time! They carry a wide range of frames as well! I recently picked out a pair of Valentino’s and they were able to get them to me with my prescription within hours so I wouldn’t miss my flight back to LA!!!
So if you’re looking for a Doctor that cares about his patients and wide variety of frames check this place out! Thank you Dr. Hoh, we’re forever fans !!

wow. I am sure Dr. Hoh is a good provider, but I called to inquire about pricing for an exam and it went something like this.
Office Staff: «Hello»
Me: «Hi, is this Dr. Hoh’s office???»
OS: «Yes.»
Me: «Oh, ok, well I have xyz insurance and am just calling to get an idea of how much an exam might be»
OS: «Give me social»
…yea. It continued on like this as I offered to give her my insurance information, but she would not say more than one word and kept demanding my social security number. Weird. I won’t be going here because I can’t imagine what it would be like trying to communicate with the staff if it was anything more complicated.

I chose this place based on the positive reviews and the fact that it’s right down the street from where I live. I had a positive experience both in terms of everyone being personable and warm and in terms of the doctor’s friendliness, patience, and willingness to explain everything to me that I wanted to know.
I now have a neighborhood optometrist and, needless to say, I’ll go there again.

Dr. Hoh is a great doctor: caring, professional, knowledgeable, and speaks fluent English.
My only complain is staff at the front desk. I had a hard time understanding and communicating with staff. And they are not so friendly or welcoming.
Well, I guess this is at the center of China town, so what do you expect?
But again, Dr. Hoh is one of the best eye doctor that I have ever had.

WHY is this page not for Dr. Hoh but for some Chinatown Optometrist? Anyhoo… I got my first pair of spectacles there 12 years ago! I left for a few years as I had moved away but came back because of their vast selection of frames and designer sunglasses, too!
They know my family because we’ve given them so much business over the years. It was a quick routine checkup today. Would have been an even shorter visit had we not gotten off topic and talked about men for a little while… haha.
I don’t like the glaucoma test with the puff of air directed at each eye. The alternative test is available. Your eyes are numbed and some kind of pressure gauge is used to press on the eyeball a few times. Somehow, that seems a lot less scary. You won’t flinch so much. Very inexplicable to me.
We have opposing views on eyeglasses and the dependency it causes. I was really dependent on them (ie very blurry vision) especially when I drive many years ago. My eyes got progressively worse, up to 150 per eye. Then, I started these eye exercises and opted to train my eyes to not need them without feeling uncomfortable. These days, I can see the smaller print I couldn’t before. Now, I’m down to 75 each eye, same prescription as when I was 20 — stable for the past 2 – 3 years. He even says I can possibly pass the DMV vision test.

Dr. Hoh is the best. I have Kaiser insurance, but I see Dr. Hoh because he is better than any of the unfriendly Kaiser optometrists I saw who messed up my prescription. Dr. Hoh’s prescription is always perfect, he explains everything clearly, he is straightforward, and the price of the exam is right. I recently had a glasses emergency and his office staff made me new glasses on a Friday afternoon right before closing. He has high fashion frames as well as discontinued less fashionable frames at rock bottom prices. Plus his staff is friendly and knowledgeable. You can’t go wrong with Dr. Hoh.

Dr David Ho is a good doctor, but he had hired unpleasant and unprofessional staff, they are not very, can’t even communicate good english, because this office is located in Chinatown that doesn’t mean everyone will speak Cantonese.
Surely, I bet Dr. Ho does loose business because of his staff. I wouldn’t go back again.

I have Kaiser insurance and thus have used Kaiser optometrists since I moved to the Bay area 5 years ago. My experiences have been fine, but certainly unmemorable. When I lost my glasses this week, I figured I would make a quick appointment with a Kaiser optometrist and get my glasses in a few days.
Wrong.
The first available afternoon appointment was in THREE weeks! With the 7 – 10 day waiting period for glasses, that’s over a month WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO SEE.
I checked Unilocal and looked for an optometrist who could do an exam on a Saturday afternoon without breaking the bank. Prices ranged from $ 49 (Dr. Hoh) to almost 200 (!). I decided to give Dr. Hoh a chance because he was the most cost efficient and was able to give me an appointment right away.
Now, I HATE spending money when I don’t have to, but I found myself glad to spend the $ 49 to be examined by Dr. Hoh. He is extremely knowledgeable, kind, funny and explains things in incredible detail. I have long suspected that an astigmatism has been the cause of poor night vision, and Dr. Hoh was able to confirm my suspicion using thorough, objective analysis. His explanation could not have been any more forthright.
I really enjoyed my experience with Dr. Hoh and also found his office staff to be professional and courteous.
