In the mid to late 90’s, there wasn’t much availability for skateboard/​snowboard equipment in North NJ. All one really had was Premier Skate Shop (been gone for years now) and Sports Authority, and there sure as shit was no Pac Sun or Zumiez.
However, there was also Specialty Sports.
Spesh has been my go-​to shop for anything action sports related for over a decade now. I bought my first skateboard and snowboard there, rode my first halfpipe there on their in-​store 4′ (my all-​time favorite ramp), and have picked up many a pair of clearance shoes and clothing.
The owner, Bill, is a great guy, and if they don’t have something you want, he can get it for you: I put together an old-​school Powell-​Peralta Steve Steadham Aces deck recently and he ordered everything for it for me, even hard to come by 10″ wide griptape.
A number of years ago they added another store in Parsippany, NJ and now also have a website and online store that’s going strong.
