Not snooty? Required $ 75 to ship two pound, $ 600 compact wooden sculpture. Wrote asking whether there was some adjustment possible. Blew me off with no response. Lost consignor a sure sale to someone with strong collection of Haitian art. Clearly this is «extra dealer profit» disguised as postage.

I love seeing the«Arts District» of Oak Park grow. Ridge Art is an important gallery there and my favorite. I married a Haitian American and took it upon myself to look into Haitian Art because of it. The first time I went into this gallery I went home with three pieces. My husband hated them. :( «You thought that just because I’m Haitian I’d automatically like this stuff?» He was right. Art can be very subjective and his love for his Michael Jordan posters and Spiderman bobble heads should have been clues for me. Anyway, thanks to my marriage and Ridge Art I am now a fan of Haitian Art. It’s gorgeous. There are pieces made with recycled materials, textiles, wood and metal. The prices are decent and the owner is incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly.

There is nothing like this gallery anywhere. Specializing in Haitian Art with an emphasis on Voodoo flags and metal work, this curator knows her stuff. Plus, many pieces are attainable because they are priced fairly. They also have shows focusing on emerging artists, most recently an amazing textile show.

I have zero use for snotty galleries with dazzing $ 500 bowls. Thanks to this gallery, I’m gettin’ my voodoo on instead. Seriously. They sell fantastic Haitian art at amazingly cheap to moderate prices. The staff are eager to educate, and don’t give you attitude. Lots of tapestries and paintings, some decorative flags(inside the house, please), and sculpture. I was drawn in by visions of la Sirene in metal. Bought three of them.

So, you’ve got some empty wall space, and you’re thinking: «Where can I get a nearly life-sized hand-painted portrait of your favorite Hong-Kong action stars? Who is unafraid to paint for me the goriest scenes of B-movie history?» Well, at Ridge Art, you can get original, painted movie posters from Ghana that will thrill and horrify every visitor to your apartment. They also have more traditional paintings from across Africa and the Carribean, as well as sculpture and even jewelry, on occasion. The owner is knowledgable, friendly, and helpful, and the prices are more than reasonable.
