We just tried to buy ice cream at 9:20 pm earlier tonight, but they were closed well before their official time of 10 pm. The evening was unusually cold and the business was probably slow, but still… We wasted half an hour driving there and back. We are not going back there. If you absolutely want to go there, call first to make sure that they have not decided to cut the day short again.

Oh, hell. This sh*t ain’t custard. I’m sorry, but that was just really disappointing because I could have driven another mile to have custard at Culver’s.

Waited about 15 minutes for a chocolate/vanilla swirl cone. I wanted a crunch dip(like you can get at Hairy Qween) but the kid behind the counter looked at me like I has asked for a Haggis. Um… ok. No I didn’t want it dipped in chocolate or peanut butter. So I took my swirl cone and enjoyed it VERY. MUCH. I’d rather wait in line for this frozen custard than Culvers.

One star is too good for this place. Horrible custard — processed fake soft serve. I would not go back, what I did have I threw in the garbage in the alley. My wife and I live in the neighborhood, and were always told to go here. One summer night we strolled up there with the baby for walk and some ice cream goodness. I could get more flavor from the cardboard box that ice cream comes in. It has been weeks since this night my heart still bleeds with sadness, and I believe my child will not ever have the same love of summer because of the scars from this hell hole in the wall!

I was passing this place after 9pm and saw a long line. What did I do? I quickly pulled over and got in line too! I have passed this place tons of times during winter months and it’s closed. I would often say I’ll visit in summer so this was my chance. This small establishment is truly a hidden gem. I ordered a medium swirl custard cone with a peanut butter dip top. It was absolutely delicious. As I enjoyed my cone, I noticed several people ordered their sundaes and they looked pretty amazing too. This was one of the best ice cream parlors I have visited in a while. If you are craving a frozen treat, I suspect the ice cream, custard, slushies and other cool treats here will meet the need. A true neighborhood gem.

My favorite place to get custard. Their vanilla is really good, and I prefer it with the peanut butter dip on the top. On really hot days there tends to be a line that goes down the street a little bit, but it usually moves pretty fast. The people inside, scooping out the ice cream, are always really nice and work quickly. Bring cash! This place is cash only. Don’t hold up the line by ordering and then realizing you don’t have any money on hand.

It’s custard cones and ice cream bars without the truck. It is a tiny place and it is a tradition every summer for our family to ride our bikes and stop in to cool down :) Every town needs a little spot like the Hole in the Wall. They only take cash– but also make sure to tip your server in the window– this is their summer job while they’re home from college!

Every year it’s a tradition when this place finally opens. We go as often as we can in the summer. You can’t go wrong with a standard cone, but the sundaes are good too.

Great little place to get a little treat to cool you down! They weren’t kidding about their name either so be prepared to wait a minute or two. Don’t worry though because the line goes quick! Located just off Oak Park exit off the blue line this is a perfect location to pick something up on your walk home. Remember CASHONLY!

Tasty frozen custard swirl cones today dipped in peanut butter and butterscotch for my daughter and I. Yumm! Prices are not the cheapest in town but cute spot!

Cutest little ice cream shop ever. Literally, a freakin’ hole in the wall. It’s always amusing to watch the line swing down the sidewalk because there’s no room to go inside. Their selection is impressive, seeing as in they are a small establishment. The prices are cheap and I am a fan. There’s really not much else to say about this gem except for, «When are we going back?» :) PS! CASHONLY!(I almost made that mistake twice) ;)

Love their freeze-ins, especially the cotton candy one. The homemade ice cream sandwiches are way too delicious, and the peanut butter dip top is a must. If only they were open all year…

Love this place. Yum yum frozen yogurt and dipped butterscotch ice cream and SOMANYDELICIOUSTHINGS. Cheap ice cream and the line for this place is usually down the street. The only sad thing is this place is always closed during the winter months.

Everyone raves about this place and waits in line on hot summer nights when I bicycle by like a weirddude. So I had to take an opportunity to come here. I am neither glad nor sad that I did. In fact if I hadnt bookmarked/checked-in I would have forgotten about it mostly. There is nothing about this place other than it is small and only accomodates one person ordering at a time that makes it «special». I do love places that hire local kids and give them jobs so cheers(and an extra star) for that. I can not see the advantage or «delciousness» in this place. If I blind taste tested you with dairy queen I’d put my money on things being a coin toss. But its not a bad place so its not like you should run for the hills. Just be warned its about average.

My friend has been going on and on about this place for a few years, but Oak Park/River Forest has so much ice cream, how can a person choose? We finally went together last week, and now I see why she likes it so much. In CA I grew up with Foster’s Freeze, and this reminded me a lot of that. Except you know, way smaller. The mix-ins are great, and something I have missed, and I am excited to go back. I do not particularly care about the distinction between custard and ice cream, as is often a topic of conversation. But this place is really good. And I’ll be back, hopefully soon.

It literally is a hole in the wall. Not more space than for 3 – 4 people inside. Stand in the long line, order at the counter, pay in cash, stand outside and eat some awesome custard. I like the cones the best. I also highly recommend the chocolate banana milkshake which is out of this world.

Oh yes. This is mighty good stuff on a hot day. Have only ever tried the basic vanilla cake cone, but it’s good custard. Reasonable price. ‘Nuff said.

This place is a beyond-incredible Oak Park institution. On several occasions it has absolutely made my day. Not only do they have old-fashioned ice cream truck standards(like Chipwiches and that most glorious of novelties, the Choco Taco), but also homemade ice cream sandwiches, frozen yogurt, blizzard-esque candy/ice cream mixtures, as well as soft serve custard. Last time I went, I had their chocolate custard dipped in a peanut butter shell, and I danced the whole way home eating it. Prices are more than reasonable(my cone was about $ 3). You should be prepared to wait in line, and there’s nowhere to sit except for a bench outside the stand, but if you ask me, you can forget anything Frank Lloyd Wright or Ernest Hemingway… Going to the Hole in the Wall is enough of a treat to warrant a trip to Oak Park all on its own.

Lucky for me, I’m walking distance from you. UNlucky for you, I will probably be visiting often. Have you ever had that«strawberry frozen yogurt» that calls itself strawberry cuz it’s pink but it tastes like vanilla? Ya won’t have that problem here, my friend. The strawberry frozen yogo was surprisingly very strawberryish. The have sundaes, banana splits, mc flurry-like treats, frozen chocolate dipped bananas, floats and shakes, etc. etc. You’ll have to visit for the full menu. Ha! It is conveniently located, not only walking distance from home, but also right off of the Blue Line Oak Park stop. And across the street from another must try spot, the Oak Park Bakery. Have fun. And bring along your willpower. Oh, and cash. It is CASHONLY.
