I was in the mood for a New York strip all week and when Friday rolled around I didn’t feel like making the drive to Rays on the west side. The Butcher Block is close to work and came recommended by friends. The store itself isn’t large. It has two counters/coolers of meat and a small collection of beer. I bought two NY strips, a handful of the hot beef jerky, and two home made slim jims for 22 bucks. The prices seemed reasonable. The butcher assisting me at the counter asked if I wanted select or choice. This prompted an interesting conversation over why most meat markets do not sell prime beef. He said typically consumers just don’t want to pay the extra cost when they eat in, restaurant dining is a different experience. He was very friendly and the service was prompt. Word of warning — they don’t take credit cards but do have an ATM inside if you need to use it. I seared the steaks in a cast iron pan and finished them to a nice medium rare in the oven. They were great, the meat was excellent quality. The beef jerked and slim jims were also tasty.

Typical butcher shop. The second you step in, you smell sausage and cheese and see fridges of soda and a huge wine/beer selection. The prices are spectacular, the quality is indescribable and never disappointing, and the staff are friendly and ready with suggestions. It’s never really crowded, either. The string cheese is to diiiiie for, the best I’ve EVER had. On Friday or Monday, be sure to come in early to grab some ALWAYSDELICIOUS pot luck. They run out fast.
