History
Established in 1982.
Built in 1873 in the «Birdcage» style as envisioned by Samuel Freeman Pratt, the Boston architect of more than 20 structures on Martha’s Vineyard & in Newport RI. One of his most famous designs is that of the Union Chapel or «Octagon Church» just down the street from our home.
Ascending the spiral staircase of our Victorian Summer «Cottage» to one of the few functioning Widow’s Walks on left on Martha’s Vineyard, one can see in the complicated structure the wonder and intricacies of Mr Pratt’s creativity. Marvel at the original wooden gingerbread roof tiles that have survived more than a century due to the ingenuity and «Yankee» frugality of the Islanders. The rear of this house was moved from where it wasn’t needed and attached to the back of this home, preserving part of the original roof. As late as 1958, when we purchased this house, as was the custom in this area, homes were sold «furnished» and so, much of the furniture is original to the house.
