History
Established in 1997.
Norm’s Bargain Barn first appeared in February of 1997 and served as an outlet for returned, discontinued, damaged and overstocked items from its parent company, Wilke Window & Door Inc. Norm Wilke had founded Wilke Window & Door in 1960 and after more than 30 years he decided to semi-retire and turn over control to his son, Steve Wilke, in 1991.
Norm soon discovered that if he wanted people to keep coming back to Norm’s Bargain Barn, he would need more to sell than Wilke Window & Door’s mistakes. Norm began calling all the suppliers that he had dealt with for years looking for closeouts, overruns and obsolete inventory to sell in his new facility. It didn’t take long for manufacturers to discover that Norm’s Bargain Barn was an excellent place to liquidate their unwanted inventory. Norm added a stock line of economical new construction vinyl windows, kitchen and bath cabinets and decorative glass entry doors to round out his product offerings.
Meet the Business Owner
Norman W.
Business Owner
Wilke Window & Door Company is a family owned business founded in 1960 by Norman Wilke. What started as a small one-man operation has grown to become the largest window and door showroom in the Metro St. Louis area.
In 1960, Norm purchased his first storm door from the Grandpa Pigeon’s store in Koehler City, Missouri. After he installed the door on his home in Belleville, a friend asked Norm to install one on his home. Norm’s talent was quickly recognized and soon he began installing storm doors as a sideline business in addition to his full time job at Swift Packing Company in East St. Louis, IL.
In 1975, Norm decided to make his sideline business a full time job. He bought 10 acres of ground on Shiloh Rd. to build a new house and a small warehouse. The completion of his new home and pole barn warehouse enabled Norm to turn his dream into a reality. Norm semi-retired in 1991 by handing his position of President over to his son, Steve Wilke. In 1997 he founded Norm’s Bargain Barn.
