Hank May’s Discount Tire & Auto Center

I used their on-​line coupon to get an oil change and tire rotation. I made an appointment and I arrived a bit early. They performed the work exactly at the appointment time, and the car was ready in exactly the time they promised. It was a simple oil change and tire rotation, but they did take the time to do a thorough check on my vehicle. They came up with a list of recommended services and all of them were legit. and unlike other quick oil change places, they explained each item patiently but no hard sell. I felt that I won the lotto, I have not experienced such an honest and friendly auto repair shop for a long long time.

I have been there several times. Every time I go, it’s always a long wait because they don’t give you a window of time nor take an appointment.
One day, my engine light was on and I had them check. I was informed the price was going to be one twenty five. But I’ve never imagined the engine light check could have costed that much, one hundred twenty five! I ended up just having to replace the gas cap. I paid a little bit more than $ 130 that day for having them find the gas cap needed to be replaced and actually replacing the gas cap.
Other day, one of the tires kept going flat, which made my driving wobbly. After a half day waiting at Hank May’s, they told me there was no problem with the tire, but I had to straighten the wheels. I went to a different store for a second opinion, they found right away the tire has a problem, visibly noticeable. I replaced the tire, and my car is running fine.
Now I won’t go to Hank May’s again.

Wish I would have read the reviews before coming here. Wait time was absurdly over the original estimate (double what I was quoted when I made my appointment) which did a reasonable amount of damage to my day. Management needs to do a better job of setting reasonable expectations for customers. Making people wait a few hours is fine with enough heads up but super inconvenient to spring that on someone with no notice.
The fact that they were not apologetic about this delay was pretty aggregating as well. Would definitely avoid in the future.

Be prepared to wait for a long time. I dropped my car off at 8:30 am for back breaks and rotors. Called at 3pm and was told it would be ready at 4pm. When I went to pick it up i had to waited for 2 more hours until 6:00 pm. The last time I came in for an oil change they needed a part and i was told it would take 30 min. Total time waited was 3 hours.

I would not advise going here.
Went with a misfired cylinder in engine due to bad spark plugs/​ignition coil. Needed spark plugs, spark plug wiring and ignition coil. Online these parts for my vehicle cost ~ $ 300-​$ 350, They charged $ 450 plus 2 hours (@$ 125/​hr) of service. Will not be returning. Heed the bad warnings on here.

I want to strongly encourage that you avoid Hank Mays in Norwalk.
I would describe the work performed and service I received on my vehicle as totally incompetent. Hank Mays installed tires on my vehicle backward. I have gotten mixed information from others tire experts about the impact of installing the tires backward, but some viewed it as potentially dangerous and likely to cause problems for the tires. Furthermore, I had asked Hank Mays to save one of my «old» tires, as it had a lot of good tread left and I intended to use it as a spare tire. Hank Mays apparently forgot my instructions and threw the tire out (a personal loss of maybe a couple hundred dollars). I was surprised management was so contentious when I inquired about a refund, given how self-​evident their poor service was. I secured an inadequate refund and probably would have gotten nothing at all but for my unyielding persistence.
I would strongly advise that you look elsewhere for your tire and auto needs.

I have had nothing but a good experience with Hank Mays. They replaced my front brakes a year and a half ago, they installed a a/​c fan blower and have replaced my tires. They did the work on time and were fairly priced. I found each one of the employees that I spoke with to be forthright and helpful, going out of their way to explain things to me when I had questions. My most recent interaction with these guys: those front brakes they replaced over 18 months ago started vibrating, they replaced the rotors under warranty even though they were out of warranty. I gotta say, above an beyond. Give these guys a shot.

Hank May not be all he promises in his advertising. Have used Hank Mays several times over past few years for oil changes/​tire rotations with no problems and acceptable results. But last week they pulled a fast one that cost them all future business with me and prompted this review. They just tried to sell me new front brake pads and rotors to the tune of $ 450 when I didn’t need the work at all! Before proceeding with them I went to Brakes of America and learned that my current stuff is finel So take what Hank Mays tells you with a few grains of salt — and be sure to get a second opinion before using Hank for anything beyond an oil change.

I would give zero stars if possible. I came in with my own part asking for a quote for them to install it. Nothing complex just a rear engine mount, it would take maybe 30mins at most. They charge 125 per hour. I was quoted at 275 for the install. On top of that they found something else that was «wrong» bringing an additional $ 450+ for labor plus parts. In all after tax including the labor for my part plus the newly found defective parts I was quoted at $ 890. I got a second opinion up the road at the Monroe shop, they just charged me for 1 hours worth of labor. It took them 30min, and they charged $ 109 after tax. A far cry from the $ 275 I was quoted at hank may.
I don’t know what happened to this place, but buyer beware they will try to rip you off. It’s really a shame. STAY AWAY FROM!

I brought back tires that one blew out the inner sidewall and the other had dry rot on inner sidewall. They said I must have hit a big pothole!!! The tires had 25 000 mlles on them and a 75 000 mile warranty, but Hank Mays wouldn’t give anything off or give a pro-​rated price. Other people have had the same problem with these Goodyear Assurance Tripletred tires, but that didn’t help me at all.

Scam– they offered a free oil change so we went to check the place out and use the coupon and then all of a sudden the «tire pressure monitor sensor» broke. .just all of a sudden when my husband went to pick up the car. the FREE oil change. ended up costing us $ 160!!! They are running a scam because while he was there the manager called 3 other customers and said the same exact thing. «your tire pressure monitor sensor broke» now how does that same thing happen to 4 customers in ONE DAY? I’ll tell you. they broke it on purpose! Do not use this place WE DIDN“T EVEN TELL THEM TO CHECK THE TIRES! SCAM SCAM SCAM! It’s hard enough to find honest mechanics around and we thought we’d give them a chance, but forget it, I can’t get my money back so I’d rather warn anyone else looking into this place. Go somewhere else.

I made an appt to get new tires back in early December. Waited 45min after I arrived to find out that they only had 2 of my tires in stock. After waiting 45−50min to get my old tires put back on, I went to talk to the manager to see what was happening with my car. He made no apologies or showed any concern for my inconvenience. When I told him I would be taking my business elsewhere, manager simply said «OK». Not the way to treat your customers if you want them to return. I’ve been there several times before for little things (emissions testing, etc) and never had a problem.
The mechanics were nice, but the customer service from the manager was deplorable. I wouldn’t recommend this business to others. Great if everything with your car goes smoothly, but good luck if it doesn’t.

Called for appointment. Had me in and out without any additional waiting. Staff was helpful and friendly. Coupon specials on the website. Highly recommend!

I recently purchased a used BMW with poor wheel alignment. The steering wheel was off-​center and driving down the highway the car didn’t feel right. I brought the car to Hank May’s and they told me the alignment was so far off the job could take over the usual 45 minutes and I’d be charged extra. I waited nearly two hours but the job was done to perfection and they worked with me on the labor cost. The car drives like new now and the steering wheel is perfectly straight. Definitely recommend this place!

Went to mount two front tires and get a wheel alignment. Tried to charge me $ 25 per tire to mount, saying the cost went to disposal, valve stems, etc when I had the stems with the tires. After mentioning this they knocked it down to $ 15 per tire which is what it should be from the start. Also took longer than they initially told me which impacted the rest of my day.
Bottom line, go in there knowing exactly what you want and about how much it should cost. Don’t be afraid to push back a little.
