While I normally do my own taxes, for 2012 I took my taxes to Dana B Davidson due to a short sale we had on a rental income property. I knew it would be complex and I wanted it done right but wanted to make sure I was taking advantage of all the tax breaks that I could. Long story short, I was charged almost $ 1,300 and received a $ 2,200 refund. Fast forward to 2 months ago when I decided to have another accountant do a second look on the taxes to find out that there were serious lapses in the preparation of the 2012 taxes by Dana. First, the sole purpose of us taking our taxes in was due to the short sale, however they never prepared a disposition of business property (form 4797) which would have enabled us to claim over $ 25,000 in carryover losses. Secondly, the insolvency worksheet was filled out incorrectly and there was only one but there should have been two before & after forms filled out due to the property having two COD’s. Third, there were numerous other errors/​mistakes that you would not expect from a CPA firm.
Now, I fully understand that we are all human and make mistakes and the above issues alone would not have warranted a review, however, when I presented this information to Dana personally, he would not take ownership for the errors nor would he refund any of my money, not even what I paid the other accountant to fix his errors. If it was just mistakes that Dana apologized for and refunded me some or all of the fee, I wouldn’t be here, however, that didn’t happen and while it was an expensive lesson for me to learn, I’d like to help anyone else I can avoid the same costly mistake.
