Sails Resort Motel

One of the worst places I have ever stayed at. The owner had rules, such as no walking on the grass. He came out yelling at my family who was having a family reunion right on the beach… My 81 year old grandmother was even with us. He comes out cursing at the top of his lungs, spit flying from his mouth saying we all need to leave and even called my uncle ugly… None of us gave him any issues. We didn’t cause a disturbance or have any issues with the guy. He wants $ 10 a person that wasn’t staying with us. We tried to give him our credit card and he said he was calling the cops. The cops came and even agreed with us that this guy was off his rocker, and the owner ended up kicking us out. He charged us for 2 days when we had only been there one! This guy was the most unprofessional business owner I have ever come across and embarrassed himself in front of a family that has been coming here for years. Maybe I would understand if we broke some rules or were causing a disturbance but we had just gotten there and were saying hello to each other when the guy lost his mind. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. This place is run by an owner who wants to ruin a good time and to steal your money.

This place is paradise. The ultimate relaxation spot on Florida’s beautiful Gulf coast… where do I start? Well, I’ve been coming here for years. Initially drawn in by the price – which is shockingly affordable for the location – but it takes more than that for me to keep coming back.
The Sails is totally independent, run by Ted, a true hotelier and about the nicest man you’ll ever meet. He remembers every face and always greets you with a warm smile. He lives across the street and manages The Sails along with his adult son and daughter. But of course, it’s still a hotel. Daily maid service (extremely friendly), free wifi (quite speedy), and a heated crystal-​clear pool naturally. Also full kitchens in every room, laundry services, and, surprise this year, brand new furniture and beds!
All par-​for-​the-​course yes, but this place is all about location. Right. On. The. Gulf. A beautiful sandy beach just a few steps away, with a private beach deck owned by The Sails. Watch the sunset, then 30 seconds later you’re back in your room. Fantastic. Now granted, there are plenty of beachside resorts around, but for $ 84/​night for my two bed, living room, full-​kitchen apartment suite? On the Gulf? You’re hard pressed.
And that’s the magic of The Sails. There are no tiki bars or live bands that perform here. If that’s what you want, look elsewhere. No, The Sails is all about that location and that service, all at that price. The photos of the tropical garden on the grounds don’t do it justice. It’s gorgeous here.
The area? Well, there’s half-​a-​dozen restaurants within casual walking distance, a couple nice bars nearby, and plenty near to tourist areas like John’s Pass or Pier 60. There’s a full grocery store 1.5 miles south, and downtown Clearwater and St Petersburg are quite nearby. Don’t worry about needing a car. There’s three bus stops within 30 yds of the hotel, and they run up-​and-​down the coast all day. $ 2/​ride, or $ 4.25 for all day. Easy.
If you want a hotel that surprises you and entertains you and gives you things to do, there are plenty of other options. For the rest of us, The Sails is a comfortable, friendly, home away from home, at a price that simply can’t be beat. Paradise.

We just returned from a relaxing vacation at The Sails Resort and Apartment Motel. What a find!
After reading all of the other reviews before booking the vacation, I wasn’t sure what to expect…
Yes, the towels are scratchy. No, the furniture is not brand new and has definitely had a few sweaty sun worshippers waller all over it. Yes, there was aluminum foil on the stove burners. Yes, the AC units are loud when you try to watch TV but work very well. These things were not a big deal to us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Our room was much larger than we expected with a separate bathroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living room. The owner and cleaning staff were very kind and helpful. We brought our own beach chairs and beach towels because you cannot take their lounge chairs out on the beach. (I called ahead and asked.) They have a very strict policy about visitors and parking, but I was happy to pay their fees for the day we had visitors. The grounds are very very well maintained.
Great location! We were able to walk to some really great restaurants! The Conch Republic (which is delicious), Frog Pond Café for breakfast, Shubee Shack, and Friendly Tavern.
After a wonderful week, this place will be our home away from home! Can’t wait to return!
